- Hello, welcome to the Who Collected Podcast.

We talk about the MBA which we're doing right now

in emergency fashion. Joining us from Naples, Florida with the Philadelphia 76er's Cap Sheets and front of them. This is Bob and Marks. - Gentlemen, free agency part two has began.

How about that? Little late July for agency. - Joining us from Chapel North Carolina where his college tour, not his college tour, his daughter's college tour continues.

His band, McMahon. - Howdy partners, no, I did graduate college although the time it took me was kind of like the time that it took LeBron to make his free agency decision. And it was historically long for sure.

- LeBron has chosen the 76ers in case you haven't heard. I believe that there are two reasons why he chose the 76ers.

Although this is obviously very fresh

and there will be more information will come out. But as he said in his comments that he made on social media after he was announced, he has chosen the number one thing is winning a championship immediately,

which is not unheard over shocking, but it wasn't 100% clear whether winning a championship this upcoming season was priority one. It was chasing happiness and we didn't know. Did happiness mean or his family was comfortable.

In fact, he openly said in his comments that family was in a priority here. So once he said, now that we know what he was thinking, and he said that winning a championship immediately this year was his priority.

I think that put Golden State and Miami off the list.

'Cause I don't think either of those teams could win a championship immediately with him joining. Maybe you disagree. But I think if that was truly how he felt,

it sort of put those teams aside. I'm not sure, I'm not sure how seriously he considered Minnesota in Denver. If Minnesota weren't Denver, we're still being considered.

I think that they could have stayed on the list in that case. Certainly Cleveland, I think, would have stayed on the list in that case. Secondly, I think the other reason

that was very much in the favor of the 76ers was that their centerpiece player or A centerpiece player is a clutch client, which is Diaries Maxi. And having a comfort level there, going into a situation where there's gonna have to be

sharing of the ball, et cetera, relying on having that basis there. Nick Nurse, the coach is a clutch client too. I don't think that is as important. - By the way, it's his birthday today.

- Nick Nurse is birthday, that's a good birthday present. - I actually was talking to Nick over the weekend because I was at an old concert venue in Des Moines. And he was all fired up about me being at this concert venue in Des Moines,

'cause he's an Iowa in who loves music. Anyway, so that is my viewpoint with more Nick Man that I really do think that when those two things were combined, he felt it fully edged out. He definitely had multiple conversations

with their star players, Joel and B. Maxi, Jalen Brown. And they obviously have some sort of basis going forward. But I don't think that he didn't, he probably had conversations with other guy. I don't know for sure, but my guess is he talked

with players on other teams too. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but those,

that's what I believe is we're doing this in the immediate

aftermath. - Yeah, and look, obviously, any kind of sentimentality did not factor in here.

I always wanted to see the full circle,

final chapter, return to Cleveland. That storyline and it had not matter or returned to Miami. He went with where he felt like he had the best chance of when a championship, it is a two-year deal,

second-year player option, but a two-ish year commitment by the Bronn, we've laid out several times forward. And each of the last three instances would need changed teams. It was that second year that he wanted to championship.

And I think if you look at their roster, like this is a hell of, if you had this roster for your fancy basketball draft, he'd feel great. Wow, this is a ton of talent. These are a bunch of guys who've put up big numbers.

I'm fascinated and curious by exactly how this all fits on the floor. You've got a lot of guys who have been, have the right to feel like they should be. The number one option, there's gonna have to be,

so some sacrifice is gonna have to be, kind of big figuring out of how all that talent messes together. Now, it doesn't have to be figured, like what this team looks like in terms of playing style

and chemistry and all that, when the season starts in October versus what it looks like when the playoffs roll around, it'd be too drastically different things. So I'm going to be very careful of knee-jorking

about any potential early season bumps in the road.

I do think stylistically,

Nick Nersfer's birthday has a very unique challenge gift-to-tool. I go back to, feels like it was years ago, but it was only a month ago when Brian said, "Go do something to these teams."

When he was told, "We're talking about LeBron." He says, "Go make a move, go do something." Right? If you want him, go do something. And this was before Philadelphia made the trade

for Jail and Brown, and I just look at that trade

basically putting him in, you know, putting him then,

now in the conversation. Put him in the conversation with LeBron. Like, the Jail and Brown trade doesn't happen. If it doesn't happen, they're, then let's face it. They're not probably in this mix of teams here

and everything like that. And when, and let's be on, I didn't think he was going to Philadelphia. I thought he was going to Miami. I really did, and then you kind of look at it,

big picture, and everything, you kind of understand why. But I think when you look at it with, and what it does is that you had deemed late as your starter. Now you push him through reserve, right? It kind of pushes everybody down the, down the pecking order here.

It's, it's fascinating, you know, just from a financial,

he's making 2.3% of the cap, about that.

That's, that, that, that, that, that, that. And by the way, you know, you mentioned Jail and Brown, and obviously we've talked a lot about kind of the way that decision makers in league, view Jail and Brown, and value him relative to his salary.

That, that, I test versus analytics thing, and Bob, yeah, it's a sensitive subject to you. But it's also, in some ways, it's like executive versus players. And the Brown was among the guys late in the season, who, you know, was publicly, I don't know,

for lobbying is the right word.

But, you know, publicly saying, hey, I think Jail and Brown

has an legitimate case for the MVP of the league. So the Brown clearly values Jail and Brown. And as you said, you know, that was a, a factor. In the decision. Listen, Bobby, don't even worry about Jail and Brown.

Jail and Brown got caught on the mic or reading his lips that, uh, Brontney James wasn't, you know, shouldn't be in the NBA, and the Brown is obviously, you know, a Brown forgivable. People can, people can, forget him.

You might, you might be his new teammate. You never know, right? Yeah. Well, they don't actually have a roster spot. They don't. We'll talk about that in a minute. Yeah, no, what I said, Bobby, was that I, you know,

I felt like the cab should have considered trading for Jail and Brown, um, uh, this was during the free agency time. I thought, you know, one that was known that LeBron was a, you know, because the, when, when, when, when you asked was available, we didn't necessarily know the Brown wasn't going to be a Laker.

Um, you could have guessed, but we didn't know for sure. We did know that when Jail and Brown was definitely available.

And the cab's had, the cab's could, I think it would have taken

ever than nobly. See, and for me, that doesn't make you better. That's not a step towards it. I mean, I'm not arguing that they should have done. Let me ask you a question. Do you do it?

Like, it's similar. Like, when we were talking about Golden State, maybe back, you know, back in free agency. Like, do you do, would you still do it? Would you still do that deal? No, even if he didn't come? No, no, I don't think so. No, I don't think so.

No, I don't think so. Give it up to the better player. More hoop collective podcast after this. Yeah, the cab's obviously elected not to make heaven, mobly available for either Yoss, a 10 o'clock,

or Jail and Brown because if they did, they probably would had a very good chance to get them.

I know that the, that the, that the Celtics got the first

round pick and the swap from Philly. But Evan, mobly is not Paul George at this point in his career. So, yeah, you know, the cab's roster since the, since they got swept in the conference finals, they have lost Dean Wade and they have lost Kian Ellis, which, you know,

Dean Wade was a part-time starter. Kian Ellis was a fringe rotation player. They lost those two, arguably they're two best perimeter defenders. Dean Wade certainly, yes, certainly very good perimeter defenders. And so, like, that's, you know, they had a second round pick,

Malik Thomas, who had a good summary. That's what they added.

So, the cab's, you know, you look at, you know, you compare it to the 76ers and the 76ers have powered up. And I will say this, Bobby Boston made their Jail and Brown decision for various reasons they believed in it and made the decision. But Boston, as we have to be feeling a certain way right now,

because the Eastern conference is going to be difficult for them to win. I think, not impossible, but it's going to be difficult for them to win. And I'm also going to put Detroit in this.

If you're Detroit and you've gone through this off season,

and you were the number one seed last year, and you've watched, obviously the next one, the championship, you've seen what Philly has done, you've seen what Miami has done, and you look at what you've done. I wonder how Detroit and Cleveland are feeling about the hands they're holding today. I mean, just look at the East, right?

I mean, look at the Eastern conferences for, even, like, Atlanta made some good decisions, as well.

And it's like, where are they in the pecking order in the East?

And with Boston, it's like, listen, you could say it was apron related or death related, or maybe it isn't like the play. All right, but don't talk to me about finances when it was based. And that's the biggest, like, and I know, like, everybody gets caught up on the apron in Boston, like, they traded a max for a max.

All right, the apron was last summer. Yeah, even Brown was not about money, right? And yeah, and because they could have still done Mitch and they still could have done the other two guys with extent, you could have still done everything, right? So like, I need, like, don't use the apron as an excuse for Boston.

Like, that's the, that's the reality here, but at the end of the day,

then they'll live with it that the trade basically helped get LeBron to Philadelphia.

I mean, that's, that's a big part of it. It's kind of like when Milwaukee made the deal to get Dame, which I like to the time, and boy, it was our wrong about that. It blew up in their face, but in making that deal, it's like, they indirectly deliver Drew Holiday to Boston and Drew Holiday was a finishing piece to the Celtics Championship

puzzle. You know, in, in this case, the Celtics decided that they were moving Jay the Brown and they were going to take the best offer, which ended up being not a great offer. But it was the best they had, and they're clearly were admitted to termination. Jay the Brown cannot come back, and they indirectly helped deliver LeBron to Philly's part of the deal.

And by the way, LeBron, I mean, you, well, let me just ask you this.

I think a lot of us, I certainly, like, I had my head in my hands for the bucks

when Michael Kitt, when, um, so I'm looking at my guy, just, I can't get it. I just, I just, I just, I just, I just, I just, I just saw my, my guy, Michael Kim, shoot 59. I'm totally, we've actually put into the PGA golf, we want to say, bring another that. He made a 25 footer on the 18th, told us you 59. Amazing. Hey, you went, you went, friends with the Brown for a lot longer than you've been

friends with Michael Kitt. I have a lot more conversations with Michael Kim, I do the Brown. The, um, the, when I, my head in my hands, when, for the for the bucks, when, when, uh, when Drew Holiday ended up on the Celtics, I was like, oh, my God, this trade has already backfired on that. Yeah. Yeah. I don't feel that way. That's necessarily about the Celtics with LeBron coming here. I think the Celtics, even if they knew LeBron was going to go there,

I think they probably still do this trade. Well, because they, they, they clearly felt like they had to trade Jayden Brown. And so, you know, you know, we can, we've talked all about the value of

that. Um, but again, I just, I didn't feel, and the Brown never called to ask my advice, but I

did not feel that Philly was a great fit for him, just because I don't know where he is like in the pecking order. And there was clear frustration at the point where he said he considered retirement about this season in LA, where he ended up being distant third, uh, in the pecking order offensively, even though he thrived in that role. Um, and now it's like, look, in beads going to need the ball. Jayden Brown clearly enjoys being the normal and guy.

Tyrus Maxi has thrived as the normal and guy. Like, is LeBron willing to kind of be the old wise facilitator and distributor first and foremost. And then, again, stylistically, here's a fascinating thing for me. This team is, you know, I say it's Tyrus, it's been Tyrus Maxi's team the last couple of years, but it's still Joelle and Beats franchise. Right. Here's the, uh,

NBA, the rank and fast break point scored last season. Tyrus Maxi first, LeBron James, second.

That's because LeBron, that was the only way you could score because they said he had to run

to score. I'm sorry. Jayden Brown, 10th, V. Jay Edge come who's probably the best athlete of the four 14th. So I think one way to really kind of figure out like how does this all fit is just to play at like, autobahn speed. And then, you know, whoever has the ball when you're ready to dunk it, throws it down. Um, now, how does Joelle and Beats fit? Now he could fit, uh, it's kind of the same way. I do what I'm playing. Pick a basketball is not cross half court on most offense positions.

But again, but that's, but that's not, you're not going to play that basketball in the playoffs. Like, I think the sixers, if we're going to have a basketball discussion about the sixers,

Sitting here at the day this happened, my speculation is that V.

and Brown are going to be the heavy lifters during the regular season. And obviously, LeBron is going to be, have a, have a significant role. But LeBron is not going to play in back to back. There's going to be times when he takes some time off. Um, you're going to want LeBron

and Embed ready to go for April. And you do what you have to do to have LeBron and Embed ready to go

for April. Now, one thing I will say as LeBron has been tweeting out pictures of himself at 530 in the morning, doing these workouts. You didn't see that last summer because LeBron couldn't

do it last summer because he was dealing with first to spring to need and then with the sciatica.

He was, he, I suspect, you know, knocking on wood, he does not suffer anything. He will be in much better physical condition coming into this season. The last season. That said, Nick nurses job from day one will be to have LeBron and be ready to roll by the postseason and be played 38 games last year. And that was, you know, when you include the playoffs, there's a most games he's played in three years. I was going to say that that's not like, uh, and then it back up center of

they signed. Already. Yeah. It's kind of a, you know, well, Dean Wake and under depending on who they're playing, Dean Wake can play some center. But by the way, Bobby, we're quite a little bit. As we sit here at this exact moment, right? The six or six can't even functionally sign the bronze at correct. Can you explain that? That's correct. It's because he's, he's signing a two year deal.

So are we sure he's going to sign a two year deal? Maybe not. That's what sports CEO and

uh, Game Over Show host Rich Paul, the president of Agent Cole Shoms. I understand. The, can you explain the Bobby? Sure, uh, because, uh, so when you, if you sign a one-year

veteran deal, uh, for cap purposes, two point four million counts against a cap, uh, doesn't matter

if you're ten years of service or five years of service, two point four million. Because this is eight. What if you're twenty-three years of service? Doesn't matter. Ten plus. There's no range. There's no range. Just he's in a ten plus range. Right. Because this is a two year deal. He's in ten times two plus range. Because this is a two year deal, which is uh, 3.9 and in the first year, there is no, there's no, um, I guess salary reimbursement, the full amount counts against cap. The same thing

is beyond the order. Yeah, the order with the pelicans, except for in this case, getting the bra on it, that number is a massive discount. So you don't feel so bad about not getting the extra savings. Yeah. So when you do it, when you do the math, their technique, their heart, they're already hard cap that's the first apron. The pushes them over the first apron. So the reason they're hard cap that the first apron is because the trade that they did with Jalen Brown, they took more money

in than they sent out. Is that correct, slightly? Yeah, I mean, they've hard cap themselves multiple times. If you can do it, Dean Wade. Oh, that's right. That's right. Hot 40. They basically, I think they've hard cap themselves four times. You can only do once, but for for them, they did it four times. So right, it was signed anyway. That's another like they've got some serious offense of fire power. More who collected podcast after this. So right now, they have 14 players under contract,

and they, and they only have $3.3 million under their hard cap. Yeah. So they are going to have to wave a couple of players. Yeah, they'll have to wave. They've got two guys down terrors on a non guarantee. Jabar walkers on a partial 250 grand. They could try to maybe move off a John Aperum and it picked in the second round of year. They could do something. They'll figure it out. The big thing will be, they'll have an open roster spot, but based on how they maneuver here, they're not going

to be able to hear it. Here's what I'm getting to. Correct me if I'm wrong. Let's say they wave the two

non guarantee players. They won't get a wave one, though, correct? Chill. Okay, chill. I bet. Let's say they wave the two non guarantee players. Yeah. They may come to Lebron and say Lebron, if you want us to sign another player, can Tavius called well pope for example. Oh,

who do you read by? I believe it's right by clutch. If you want to sign another player, you need to

sign a one year deal. Is that correct? Correct. Oh, correct. So we'll see. This is this is the footnote. Okay. This is why Bobby is here, but but as far as the six years go, you would think that they're starting line up when they're fully healthy. We don't know when they're fully healthy is edge come and maxi at the guards Brown and Lebron the forwards and beat its center. That is

That's loaded.

figured out, but that is correct me if you guys feel like I'm wrong. The most athletic back court in the NBA. Well, and then let's talk about their backups. So their backups would be Dean Wade who can play three four or five. That's a versatile player. And Frany Simon's a bucket get off the bench. Are they signed? Who, um, you know, will be a, you know, a shooter, a demo owner who was a quality backup big, right? He's a, he's a player. That's for sure. Athletic

guy plays hard. And then they have just in other words, and Dominic Barlow is back up forwards. Road edge rotation players. It's a pretty, and the rock, and the rookie that they drag. Yeah, he was good in summer in Lebron. Lebron. He's a guard. Yeah. It's pretty good. It's a pretty good

10 man team. Well, and again, I think it's the most athletic back court. And I think it may be the

most athletic forward tandem. He will love the Bronx turning 42 this year, but tell me a more athletic forward tandem than Jay them Brown and the Bronjane. Well, again, Dean Wade was starting in the playoffs for the team that went to the conference finals last year. I'm not saying that he was driving force. But that's a, that's a, you know, that's a decent big man rotation. Even if you're down in bead for half the season, their big man rotation is substantial. Yeah, and, and Jay them Brown.

I'm sorry, Dean Wade is probably the guy best suited to chase around a bunch of the elite

perimeter scores that they'll see. Jay them Brown might be second best suited for that.

Well, it's not going to be Lebron, you know, Bronjane, but they'll be able to hide the Bronjane. Yeah, it's probably pretty well suited for some of that, too. The shot distribution is going to be fascinating to me. And just how much of a focal point in bead is offensively is going to be fascinating. Well, this is what I'm sure they've been discussing in these last few weeks. I'm sure Lebron, from, from, from my knowledge, the Bronjane said multiple conversations

with these sixers players. And I'm, I'm, I'm, let's say they got the X's a nose out, but I don't want to guess what was in those conversations. But my guess is how they were going to play would be discussed. I don't think it was where the best restaurants in Philly are.

Tell you what your guy, Gansy man, he didn't come in, you know, timid in his first crack as the,

as a GM. I will say this, like Lebron's, no Mike Gansy, since he was a teenager. You know,

I'm not saying that that, like, again, I think he, I think the reasons he chose Philly

were because they can win immediately. And because Tyreys Maxi is, like, one of the central pieces of the team, and he knows he can trust them. I think those, I think that's driving it. But the fact that he's coming in, having some background with Gansy, who was also in Cleveland, all the years, he was in Cleveland. Gansy was in the Cleveland front office for a decade. And nurse is also a clutch guy. I think, you know, and also look, you're, you're putting your hands

and saying, we believe in Bob Myers, you know, if there's a situation here, Bob Myers, you know, if there's an issue that Bob Myers voice is there. So I gotta tell you, I don't, you know, I saw Bob and Vegas, that's me. I, last week in Vegas, the six years didn't think they were getting them. Okay. So, you know, maybe that was, maybe that we're throwing off, but they didn't think they were getting them. So, um, it'll be interesting to see. And it's a, and going back, like,

I just keep on going back to that next series too, where they basically got, you know, infiltrated by Nick's fans, and they lose, they get swept, and there's thinking like, this thing is,

this, it's almost like a dead end, right? Dead end roster. I mean, it's amazing how things

were going, especially humiliating way to go. And I said it, then that I almost felt like it would been better if that had a lost game, seven in the first round in the way that the second round played out. I mean, wow, that was a rough way to end when it's 80% Nick's fans, and you're just getting blown out to finish a sweep, and it's on your home floor. Um, but nobody will be thinking about that when the season starts. I mean, they have, they have made, well, the Jane Brown trade and the

Braun sign, and those are the two biggest splashes, certainly in terms of publicity. Well, I feel good on how you guys, but our podcast, the posted on Friday morning, I feel good about calling the six or is my winner. You like to revise that? No, I don't know like to revise that.

I like to show how bad when you have them at the winner. What do you think opening?

I wouldn't be surprised. I heard I had a little bit of scum, but like this in the last days. I wouldn't, I wouldn't be surprised if we go triple hat or opening night. Which is it starting having a game at four o'clock. Having a, I wouldn't be, I'm, and I'm

I'm, and I'm trawled get angry and you're like heck on this, and I'm just spe...

I wouldn't, I wouldn't be surprised if we go, like, you know, Boston affiliate for someone at New

York at seven and in the Western Conference game at night. Well, and what's the Christmas game?

Is it LeBron going back to LA? Is it Jay and Brown against the Celtics? Like the Braentex Presidents with the TV schedule, right? I mean, he just does. I would think filling you, I'm filling New York would probably be Christmas, right? Oh wow. You'd have to, you'd have to have filling New York room. If you, no, no,

Philly Boston on Christmas, if you don't, Jay and Brown's returned to Boston. Yeah, I just think the

Brown and LA might be it. I'll also give LeBron a Christmas at, you know, at home. Well, that's true.

That's true. It's come, it, I'll tell you what, like I know that Adam Silver was like grumbling about

the way this is all fallen, like all the Philly Cleveland games are interesting. Listen, Philly New York games are super interesting. Philly Boston, Philly Boston is like, in the competition for Christmas and for wrongs through King Day, whatever, over the week, Philly LA, both of those games, did Philly Miami, to be all the time. Yeah, yeah, I mean, this is like when the heat, I mean, this is, this doesn't have the villain

complexity that the, that the heat big three did, but like every time the, the heat played,

it was an event. I don't know if that'll be the same here, but like just think of the delicious

matchups that Philly has instantaneously, like there's 10, 10 premium games on top of my head involved in this. No question. And yeah, then no doubt about that. Now, I just want to caution. It was a couple summers ago when the 76ers were the big winners of the summer. And we're, we're, we're to bond teams go on as little training camp vacation.

Yeah, was it behind the scenes of Bahamas? Yeah, but in the Bahamas and, you know, basically, hey,

we're going to kind of slow play with Paul George and Joel and B and we're microwave that chemistry come play off time. So I, I just bring that up just to point out, just because you make this blastious moves of the summer doesn't mean you've made the day. Hey, hey, hey, I'm a prime example. Oh, listen, we had a, we had a sport zilla shade to cover the team. Nobody wants the play. So I, and as I said, the beauty of the offseason is everybody you're on paper, right? Like

the paper, the beauty, everybody, and then you get to train camp, you're like, holy crap, what just happened. This is not what we thought of, but yeah, I mean, we're on everybody's on a honeymoon period and everybody loves your roster and everybody will talk about Philly and New York and all these teams and stuff like that, but we get to late September, early October. Yeah, roll it up all. It's a hell of an NBA 2K roster. There's no question about that, but, you know,

the season is not played with with video game controllers. That's true. All right, we'll have be talking about this significantly more in the coming days. And, um, man, enjoy the rest of your college tour. Hey, we're going to check out the Carolina basketball museum here in a little bit. So I am truly looking forward to that. All right. Thank you, Bobby. Thank y'all, man. Thank you to our producers who scrambled to get on on this. Thank you for listening and watching. Who collected? We'll talk to you

in next week. Are your snowy girls?
