A Bad Mood

meditating on eternity. Let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son in the Holy

the Father, Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, which crucified, died and was buried. He descended

into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the

right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. we're all at that end, Amen. Our first mystery, we've all had those days where we just

“seem to get up on the wrong side of the bed, and we go through the whole day in a totally”

foul mood, all the unpleasant stuff we have to deal with looms large, and even all the good stuff in our life feels totally lame. And sometimes we say things like, I'm just in that mood where I want to burn it all down. Fortunately, we usually snap out of it, but we have to be careful because in Dolging in a bad mood can make it a lot harder to get out of it, and getting stuck in a bad mood forever is basically what hell is. Our Father who

“Oh, my Jesus, forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to have”

an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our second mystery, hell is just a permanent state

of nothing seeming to be right. Everything feels wrong and things that are objectively good are the most repulsive of all. When we're in a funk, we might say we feel like burning it all down, and that's exactly what happened as hell. The twisted attitudes of the souls and demons have torched everything, reduced everything to barrenness, dryness, ash, and sulfur. They made everything a big dumpster fire. For eternity, the people there indulge in their nasty, resentful,

embittered mindset. Even if anything good could survive in hell, no one would appreciate it. Just like when we are in a foul mood, we despise happy wholesome things, most of all.

So do the souls in hell. They despise most of all that which is best. So do you see why it's

“really important not to indulge in a bad move? Because that foul mood could be your eternal destiny”

if you make a habit out of it. Our Father who art in heaven, hollowed be your name, thy kingdom come by will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Our third mystery. By definition, being in a bad mood feels bad, and yet astonishingly,

many of us deliberately indulge and encourage that mood when it hits. We intentionally brewed on things going wrong. We brewed by watching a reading news that makes us angry, fearful, or depressed. We brewed by going online and looking at all the bad decisions being made, all the errors being spread, all the things that wicked people do, and the stupid things people say. Most especially we brewed on all the ways we personally have been wronged, and we brewed on

This kind of indulgence will not only prolong and deepen your bad mood, it'll take

away your resistance to sin, and you'll lash out at the people around you.

“You'll overindulge in lust or food or entertainment, because you figure that life is bad anyway,”

so what does it matter? And you'll definitely be in no state to want to offer prayers, so praise and thanksgiving to God. So do you see that indulging in a bad mood? It's not only a foretaste of hell. It's one of the most expedient ways to get you there. Our Father who art in heaven, hollowed be your name. That kingdom come by will be done on earth as

All my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fourth mystery, far from indulging a bad mood, Christians are called to fight it, and St. Paul repeatedly commands us,

rejoice in the Lord always. So what can we do to get out of a bad mood as quickly as possible?

First stop feeding it. Don't turn to news that you already know will make you angry, frightened or depressed. Now I know what you're thinking. I have to be responsible. I have to stay informed about what's happening in the world. No, no you don't. You don't need to know everything

“happening in the world. Yes, you need to know what is necessary to fulfill the responsibilities.”

God is actually given you a state of your soul, your marriage and family, your work and whatever particular mission God has entrusted to you. And yes, you should be a responsible citizen, vote prudently, pray for your leaders, and act when you can genuinely serve the common good. But endlessly consuming news about events you can't influence is not responsibility. It's often the vice St. Thomas Aquinas calls Curiosity Toss and undisciplined hunger to know things

most news consumption does not make you more responsible. It makes you more agitated, more judgmental,

“more distracted, and less present to the people God has actually placed in front of you”

and less present to God. You tell yourself that you are carrying the problems of the world while neglecting the small part of the world God has actually given you to love. If the news does not help you pray, decide, act, then turn it off and stop confusing the consumption of information with the fulfillment of love of God and neighbor. That step one. Don't look at, or listen to anything that's going to make your bad mood worse.

Our fifth mystery, step two is more positive. Pray, spend time and prayer, ask Jesus and Mary for help by name, because only the Lord's grace can fill us with the joy and peace that can break a bad mood. So ask for it. Souls in hell can't pray for Christ's peace and Christ's joy,

but you can. So pray for it. Second, meditate on. Think about all the gifts and blessings you have that you might not have. Make a list of twenty things, twenty friends, or family members, or comforts, or aspects of your health, or actual accomplishments the Lord has granted you. Lots of people don't have those gifts, but you have them, and it's pretty extraordinary. Souls in hell can't think about their blessings, but you can. So do it now.

And third, meditate on. Think about all the stupid decisions you've made, and all the bad things you've

done, where God has just given you another chance. He's let you get away with it.

just in whole bunch of bullets you dodged. And now you get another chance to keep going

“and encouragement to try and do better. In each of those cases, things could have turned out so”

much worse, but God was merciful to you. Souls in hell can't contemplate God's mercy, but you can. So do it now. Do these things. Don't get you out of a bad mood, and they'll certainly keep you out of hell. Our father, who art in heaven, hell would be your name? I kingdom come, I will be down on earth as it is in heaven. St. Michael, the Archangel, Defenders, St. Battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God review him, we humbly pray, and do that little prince of heavenly hosts by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan, and all the evil spirits who prowth throughout the world seeking the rude souls in the name of the Father,

“in the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen. So what struck you with this meditation, Teresa?”

You know, I think you already explained it in the meditation, but it's worth emphasizing

that we're not saying you can never be in a bad mood. Right. If we're not saying, oh,

oh, I'm sorry, your dog died today, but smile, you know, brighten up. But there's a difference between we're not saying ignore your emotion. We're not saying just put on a happy face, no matter what, but there's something about indulging a bad path, which is very, very dangerous. And I think back, I think I'm a really good example of it from my own life. I, in college, I went through probably the most typical college experience, which was a college break-up. And I was so miserable

after it for way too long because I would constantly retell the story to everyone that would listen.

“I mean, it was the first thing I would talk about when catching up with someone, or how are you?”

And you get a whole speel, a whole monologue, every single time. To the point where I would catch myself, if I was alone, I was retelling myself the same story. And you know, when I got over it, it's when I stopped telling the story. Because it's, it's not that you should lie to people.

that I would be perfectly having an OK day. And then someone would ask me, you know, how I was handling things. And immediately, the instinct would kick on to retell the whole story and by the end of it, I was upset again. And it's just regurgitating all the motions. And it's just, I was the one making myself miserable, not because it wasn't hard, not because it was super easy. I don't want to put down or invalidate the emotions I had at the time. But at some point I realized,

that the continuation of it was my fault. And then I just, I got over it once I,

I simply walked away. Yeah. And now I don't think about it. I never think about it.

It doesn't outcross my mind. I thought this would be a huge deal in my life. But sometimes it's just the stories we tell ourselves. It's, this is such an important point. I think we should all maybe set aside a little bit of time with a pad and pad and pad and pad and sit and ask ourselves, what, what bad stories do I tell myself? And then make the choice, the resolution, stop telling that story. Yeah. And that can even be a little thing in your day.

“You can have one bad moment in your day. And then you get to work and you have to tell everyone”

about that bad moment. And then after work, you have to tell everyone, all my day was awful. This terrible thing happened in the very beginning. The rest of it might have been fine. But then afterwards, you're still just going to keep finding people that tell the story. And we definitely also fall into circles where we kind of exchange some stories, whether that's bringing it up from our deep past or I had a really bad week. I hadn't even worse week.

Let me tell you how bad it was. And sometimes there are levels where it's good to talk about your pain and your problems and talk it out with someone. Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't do that. A large part of therapy is being able to talk about what you're feeling and to really be heard by someone. But then there's also pulling out your stitches opening up your wound and

“poking it again. Exactly. Yeah, re-stabbing yourself. Yes, constantly. You know, I think the other”

area is comparison where we have really good lives and then we get on some form of social media. And if and because we're interested in something or something that relates to our life and we watch it one time, it now feeds you a thousand short videos of this. So here, a funny thing happens with your brothers and I. So, you know, we lift weights three days a week. And so we squat,

bench, and deadlift. And we're trying to increase our deadlift. So here's what we do. The three of us

respective of our ages and weights are pretty strong. Yeah. But here's what we do. We watch videos of the strongest guys in the world. And if you're seeing a video, it's because that's probably their whole life. Yeah. So we're watching guys who can deadlift a thousand pounds, literally. And then all of a sudden you get a thousand videos of all these different guys. And you want to, why can't I deadlift a thousand pounds? No, no, wait a minute. If we take all the 58-year-old

guys who weigh what I weigh in the world, I'm doing pretty good. It makes us really quit trying so many things and stuff and join things that we would have otherwise enjoyed. I even, in a parallel way, someone, I can't remember where I saw someone talking about. We've kind of devalued amateur experiences, because it's a comparison. People don't want to make music or play music if they're not arena level or the guys that they see on YouTube all the time, because on YouTube, video after video after video,

if you are looking up guitar and things like that, it's unbelievable. It's just not comparable. So you're like, I'm not good, but also people don't want to listen to amateur music because they only hear studio quality stuff. And so we lose half of the enjoyment of music, which is making it yourself. Exactly. You need yourself in sharing it on a local level. I love now going back

and listening to the first EP from bands and realizing they are on the level that all the people

“I know are at, but we don't care anymore. We only hear their most popular album. You know what?”

I'll tell you what I delight in, almost more than anything when it comes to music. When you bring your app and your guitar over and I simply get to hear in the background,

true. No, I'm saying I need you to keep repeating that because I don't want to keep annoying my

“friends and my roommates with my guitar, so I'll come and know you. It is to me one of the most”

delightful things. And again, it's if you're only going to compare and you're like, I'm not going

to lift weights because I can't lift a thousand pounds or I'm not going to play music because I can't

“make a studio quality album that takes a ridiculous amount of money, time, professional experience”

and promotion. You're not going to enjoy anything. Yeah. So, set all of that aside. You're really

happy with the things around you. Get out of your bad mood. Those are two good resolutions.

“Identify the bad stories you tell yourself and stop. Secondly, just pick something you delight”
