Cannot Serve Two Masters

Jack sent me an email letting me know it was your birthday today and it's so fantastic

to see two young people committed to daily meditation and a resolution through the rosary. I hope you have a wonderful day and today we take our next step in the sermon on the

“Mount where Jesus said, "You cannot serve two masters." So who are the two masters?”

Let's begin in the name of the Father in the Son in the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for. I believe in God the Father Almighty creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ is only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate. It was crucified,

died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven

and he seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven,

Our first mystery, it's a very popular assumption that we can do gravely evil things,

while still being a basically good person. Sometimes people will say that even though we do things that are against church teaching, we can still have the fundamental option, the fundamental orientation to God. A more mainstream expression of this idea, the idea that we're good people, even though we do really bad things, comes in the form of Hollywood movies where people doing hard things still have a heart of gold. There are movies where the main character is prostitute with a

heart of gold, or a contract killer with a heart of gold, or a swindler with a heart of gold. But that's not the way gravely evil actions work. Gravely evil actions corrupt our character and gravely evil actions establish a false God in our lives and so turn us away from the true God. Our Father who art in heaven, Hollywood be your name. Our second mystery, every gravely evil act, when freely and knowingly chosen, establishes a new

false God at the center of our lives. Jesus says it very clearly in the sermon on the mount. No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

“This means there's only room in the human heart for one most important thing.”

And when you commit a gravely evil act of greed, you are choosing money as your false God. When you commit a gravely evil act of lust, you are choosing sexual gratification as your false

God. When you commit a gravely evil act of vanity or anger, you are choosing self-importance as your

false God. Just as we can choose to orient our lives to God through Jesus in one act of conversion. So we can also choose to orient our lives away from God and toward an eternity of dissatisfaction by one mortal sin, which is why our individual behaviors actually matter when it comes to our character and our eternal destiny. a people may try to pretend that their gravely evil sin shouldn't affect their relationship with God. They tell themselves, I wasn't consciously rejecting God, but of course, you can commit infidelity without consciously thinking about the person to whom you're being unfaithful. For example, if a husband commits adultery, he's not going to make things better by explaining to his wife afterwards that he wasn't even thinking about her. So, too,

you can reject God as God. You can violate the first commandment and destroy your relationship with

him without thinking about him at all. All that's required is that you choose a different master, and that's exactly what mortal sin is. Our Father, who art in heaven, hollowed

David Foster Wallace in a famous commencement address told his audience of college graduates

“that they had to make a choice. What was going to be their God?”

Here are his words. In the day to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshiping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what? To worship. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning

in life, then you will never have enough. Never feel you have enough. It's the truth.

Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age catch up to you, you will die a million deaths before they finally leave you. Worship power and you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more

will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. If you choose to worship

the wrong thing, it will eat you alive. When people leave a life of drugs or promiscuity or greed or raw ambition, they don't say, "Yeah, I was a little misguided, but I always had a hard gold." No, they say, "I was a disaster. I was totally broken. I was in desperate trouble." Because gravestone destroys your life, idolatry destroys your life. Worshiping the wrong thing,

“making anything else the most important thing destroys your life. Our Father who art in heaven,”

Our fifth mystery, the Catholic Church doesn't judge the state of other people's souls, but it does take grave sin very seriously. It takes grave sin seriously because grave sin is idolatry. It's choosing a false God. It's bowing down before an idol

“that will eat you alive. And what are the grave sins we are most tempted to excuse today?”

Sex outside of marriage, adultery, pornography, contraceptive sterilization, divorce, understood as ending of valid marriage, and remarriage without an enrollment, homosexual sexual activity, drunkenness, or drug use, deliberately missing Sunday Mass, gambling that seriously harms ourselves or our family, and deliberately watching things that draws into grave sin. If you've committed grave sin and not confess it,

run to confession, and ask God to reestablish His supremacy in your life, and ask Him for the

“Amen. So what caught your attention with this meditation, Teresa?”

Think life definitely imitates art. We definitely have that mentality that it's you can be pretty bad with a heart of gold, and I think to be fair to a lot of people, I think it comes for a really good place. You know that people aren't inherently evil and that there's something good in them. Yeah, people are inherently good. Fight for that good, but you can't fight for that good if you're denying the thing that crops it as well. Because the heart of gold

concept, it's like you're made by God, you are made in His image, and that's always going to be

underneath no matter what you do, but these things we do, they also have an effect, and our actions reflect who we are. I definitely know a lot of people, especially when I was younger, in college, especially it was like, oh yeah, my friends, they're all really good people. I mean, sometimes they can just be so terrible. I had friends I would literally be like, yeah, this guy cheated on his girlfriend, but we're really good friends with him. Oh, this guy, he sends some really awful things and I really

hate how he treats people in public, but he's just a really good guy if you get to know him, and it's like, your friends are concerning to me, and it scares me when you're around, because what does

“it mean when you say they're a good person? Does it mean they're good so long as you're good to them?”

And really you're not calling your friends higher if you're accepting that as good behavior, as a good person, because they're good in under certain circumstances. Everyone is good under certain circumstances. I mean, if we're all in the perfect environment, there's really no, as long as you don't hit them, they're not going to hit you, but it's under

at it's when it's tested. Yeah, it's, you don't have to be good in virtuous and courageous

“until you're under pressure and solve these actions. We kind of have to reassess and remember,”

you do have a heart of gold, but what are you doing with it? Yeah, and most of us have committed graves in, but this is the great, this is the good news that that's not the end of the story. Mercy and forgiveness and transformation and holiness are supposed to be the end of the story.

And all we need to do is go to Jesus, make present, through the priest, in the sacrament of

reconciliation and everything can be changed. It starts with recognition.

“It's funny because even those stories that we're referencing, the ones about”

a prostitute with a heart of gold or a killer with a heart of gold, even those stories want to call their characters to something higher and hopefully by the end of the story, they're no longer a prostitute. Most of the time, the action still has to change. Absolutely, then. And the action is

indicative of the interior. This was, this is the powerful moment where they bring the woman

literally caught in the act of adultery to Jesus. And he doesn't condemn her, but he does say to her, go and sin no more. That's a, yeah, because I'm not saying, especially thinking about those

“friends that weren't a great representation of themselves or others, it's not that you should never”

have friends that sin, but you should love someone and call them to more and you should, you should even love yourself and still expect more of yourself. Yeah, one of the best I am not going to document it right now, but I led a very gravely sinful life. And one of the best experiences ever was I, I went made a general confession. I spent time and reflected on my whole life and all the grave sins, all the different categories, types. And I went to confession. I said, I actually I told the

priest ahead of time. I want to make a general confession of everything in my life. So I want to make it a little longer appointment. That's smart. And there can be the fear of there's a long line behind you and you walk in and you want to enter the next day with a blank slate and you want to clear everything away, but you're thinking about the 20 people. Yeah, and it was the the most wonderful experience. The priest was fantastic and it it was the moment to drown everything in the

abyss of God's mercy. So if you haven't, if you have grave uncommitted, sorry, if you have uncommitted graves sins are good, good job. If you have unconfessed grave sins and doesn't matter if it was 70 years ago, 30 years ago, 10 years ago, if they're unconfessed, it's time to allow the mercy of Christ to transform you. So and priests are fantastic. They are there primarily to do two things, transform the bread into Christ and forgive your sins, given the opportunity to do that.
