Memento Mori

This is the next in our series of reflecting on eternity. Let's begin in the name of the Father in the Son in the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

“I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and earth.”

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate. Was crucified died and was buried. He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven and he seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting, amen.

“All our Father, who art in heaven, hollowed be your name.”

Thy kingdom come, thy will be down on earth as it is in heaven. Our first mystery, in an old section in the city of Rome, in the Barbarini district, there's

a series of chapels made by Franciscan friars, and when I say that these chapels are made by Franciscans, I don't just mean they were designed by Franciscans. I mean that these chapels are actually built with the bones of the dead members of the Franciscans these chapels are jam packed with bones the alters are made of bones the light fixtures are made of bones the various images and representations of the saints on the walls are made

“of bones that's why it's called the church of bones and it feels like some weird scene from”

an Indiana Jones movie but there's a reason for this series of chapels it's not just an exercise in morbidity it's a spiritual reminder and in the last chapel there's a plaque on the floor engraved in marble it speaks for the thousands of bones in that place

and it says what you are we once were what we are you soon shall be and the truth is that's not

Remember that you must die and the spiritual truth is that remembering our death should help us live better.

Scripture says in all you do remember the end of your life and then you will never sin and

solve 90 praise teach us Lord to number our days that we may gain wisdom of heart. And Saint Benedict placed this among the tools of good works in his rule to keep death daily before one's eyes. And a common custom was for every monk to keep a human skull in his cell. Another was for the monks when they passed each other in the halls to say to one another

“lament to mori. Remember that you will die. And even now every ash Wednesday”

were marked with ashes and we hear remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.

So it wasn't just a group of eccentric Italian Franciscans. It has been the instinct of Christians

from the very beginning to stay focused on the fact of death. Because heaven is the destination and we can only enter by the doorway of death. Our Father Ward and heaven, hell it would be your name, that kingdom come, that will be done in earth as it is and heaven. Give us a stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil amen.

to keep death in mind is that death is the last act of the Christian life. It's the last hurdle to clear the final barrier, the last enemy. When boxers are preparing for a big fight, they keep a picture of their adversary up on their bathroom mirror. That's how they say focused.

“That's how they remember they need to keep training. Death is our adversary. It's the last big”

adversary will ever have to fight. The same Paul says, the last enemy to be destroyed is death. So looking into the face of death could be scary or depressing, or with the right attitude, it could be energizing, concentrating, motivating. And Christ is our model.

Jesus always kept the cross at the forefront of His mind, not because He was scared, but because He had

a mission and He wanted to stay focused. Like a basketball player looks at the hoop as He practices free throws, or like a sharp shooter looks at the target. So we look at death and we get to work. Oh, my Jesus, forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to have and especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fourth mystery, there's a final thing we remember when we talk about Memento Mori, and it's something G.K. Chesterton noticed. He wrote that focusing on death isn't only to remind us of a future life, but to remind us

“of this present life too. Yes, we look at the skull to remember that we're going to die,”

but we also look at the skull to remember that we're not dead yet, and all unhappiness

good music, good food, a green patch of trees, with one little brilliant red cardinal

“perched right in the center of it, and that's the other beautiful service meditating on death”

renders us. It makes us never, never take the good things of this life for granted.

Now, after death, there will be other new and wonderful good things waiting for us. But we'll be sorry when we look back at this life. If we failed to appreciate the incredible gifts and blessings God sent us in advance. Our father, who art in heaven, hollowed be your name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stay, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us, and let us not in too temptation.

“the phrase, "Memento Mori," remember that you must die, should motivate us to live better now”

through a few practical resolutions. First, to make daily meditation and a resolution are absolute

habit to listen to the word of God, think seriously about it and choose one concrete way to put it into practice. If you make that a habit, you will change for good, grow and virtue, and you'll be well prepared for death and heaven, but if you don't, oh, you will change, but for the worse, because unchecked vice gets worse over time, not better, and you will be prepared for purgatory at best or worse. Second, take a few minutes every day to examine the previous 24 hours,

ask honestly, where did I do what was wrong, where did I fail to do what was right, and then bring that stuff to confession regularly, at least once a month, even better every two weeks, in confession Christ frees us from sin and guilt, increases his life within us,

and frequent confession is like a dry run and the best preparation for death and your particular

In the name of the Father, in the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen. Well, what catches your attention with this

meditation, Teresa? That's mostly. I was actually thinking about, I came across a summary of some of the ideas of, I don't know how you say his name, Pliny, Pliny? Yeah. The old philosopher, Pliny, even no one, not the guitarist. I was thinking of the guitarist, actually. Pliny, yeah, the Pliny, the guitarist. He's fantastic. I bet he has some great great ideas. I actually like bucket head better. That's fair. They're both very good

instrumental guitars. Yeah. But it's one of the last thoughts he had was this idea that I doesn't matter. There's no afterlife and that's actually a good thing because nothing happens. We shouldn't be afraid of that. You simply become immaterial and really the best case scenario is no pain. So just don't worry about it. And it rubbed me the wrong way so deeply. To be so satisfied with that way of thinking because we think about death. It's not

we're so afraid of nothingness that we have to create an afterlife, but without an afterlife, that takes meaning away from the life we're currently living. But likewise, thinking about death

“changes the way that you live. Yeah. And you need to reflect on. I mean, everything that comes”

next or what does this mean right now. It's not like this fearful thing, but it's a contextual awareness. It's an awareness of trajectory. And I don't know that really stuck with me. How sad a lot of people

It's not a fear of nothingness. It's a fear of the fact that there could actually be

“consequences. And there's two sides to that coin of consequences that if we live badly,”

meaning selfish evil lives, there's a really bad consequence. The other consequence though is if we live really excellent lives, lives of love and self-sacrifice and heroism, there's a huge upside consequence where we have this wrong idea. And we get it from a misinterpretation of that

parable where the vineyard owner comes out and he hires the guys at 7 a.m., the guys at noon,

the guys at 5. They all get paid the same at the end of the day. And we take that to mean, no matter what you did in this life, we're all equal in heaven. That's not true. The point of the parable is those who get into heaven all have eternal life. But we're not all equal in heaven because in heaven we will we will receive and participate in the life of God in proportion to the way we loved here on earth. A good analogy is when mother Teresa loved so much her soul became like an ocean of love.

If you could see my soul right now, it would be like a eight ounce glass of love. A nice puddle of love. Maybe I'd be a puddle of love, a puddle of love, but not an ocean yet because I need to still I still have time to grow in love. So there's a real we have the chance. To now, to love and be expanded to an ocean of love. And there will be a corresponding ocean of delight rather than just a fimble of delight. I mean, if you could drink the greatest

possible drink ever with the greatest possible satisfaction, would you say, let's take a thimble of that, or would you say, give me what do they call those big, give me a big stine of that. No, give me an ocean of that. I got lost there for a moment because I was thinking about the German measurements of beer or some of the biggest measurements I've ever seen. Give me

“the big one. Yeah. It's really, it transforms how you think about this life because this life is a”

development of self and it's not just for this life. If it's just for this life, you're just a sand castle that's going to get knocked over because it doesn't matter what you build, but you're not just not how we're designed. It's not what we are aimed towards. It's not what we desire as human beings. It's what makes us different from every animal. Look at our design. We crave more than this. And this is the only thing that logically follows with the kind of hope and

outlook we have on life. This is the time. This is the time to grow and love. That's all that matters.

I'll be thinking about death a lot more. I think I already do. I think I've always liked a lot of

Gothic literature and more in a more modern way, emo music, which calls you to reflect on death,

“but this is the best way we can reflect on death. What am I making? What are you making?”

Which gives you the greatest thing to look forward to. When you have something phenomenal to look forward to, it makes you live the present moment better. When you have nothing to look forward to, you live randomly. Exactly. But we're not random creatures. We're people of hope and we need to give a world that's living in despair hope.
