And then do your special piece next. - 100% and also, I get so frustrated when people screw up a recipe. And they say that they didn't actually read. The recipe through, it's like rule number one.

- Yes. - Patricia Cornwell are girly, released her first book. 30-something years ago. - Oh, through. - And we are here to talk about post-mortem.

- Hell, yes. - Which first book, first book ever. You read the book. - In the case, Scar Petisier. - When you were how old?

I think I was like 10. That's wild. - Which like? - I was white in it. - Born at.

- You were born 1990. - Yeah. - I was in a life. I was five. (laughing)

- I think my mom was still in high school.

Damn. - Maybe, I'm not sure. - I don't know her life. - Yeah. - I do remember seeing my mom read Patricia Cornwell

books all the time. - Yeah. - So this was a fun one to dive into. - Hell, yeah. - This is really fun.

I remember you talking about Patricia Cornwell

for as long as I can remember, but I'd never picked one up.

I don't even know why, 'cause now I'm like, I want to read all the time. - I don't know that. - Kay, it has a special place in my heart now. - Oh, I love Kay.

- And Kay just gets better and better. That's good to know. - That's just super star. She does. She evolves in a big way.

Can't wait during the series. - Love it, love it, love her. - Also, the show just came out. - Yeah. - I think by the time you guys are listening to this,

that definitely came out. So I'm excited to watch that. I know that it will probably spoil some like future ones, but I'm willing to do that. - I'm willing to dive in.

- So I think what it does, it's like a dual timeline, where it covers this book at post-mortem. And then the second timeline is gonna cover autopsy, which I think is like the 25th book. So it's the big time jump and they'll cover both timelines.

So I think you can watch some of it after this

and not get spoiled, but the other one you'll, you'll get spoiled, cool, don't you? - But there's like 29 books to read. - And a lot of bad guys, so it's like, you're really only spoiling one, one like storyline.

- And they cast Nicole Kidman. - And she looks funny at all. - No. - Like does she aid? - Which one though?

- No, I saw a recent interview with her and I was like,

what? - And it's just always perfect.

- Yeah, literally. - It's like Lilo, how Lilo just emerged. And you were like, why do you look like a newborn baby come out of your mother's womb? And that's how Nicole Kidman looks now.

She really does. And I was like, whoa, I'm like, maybe she micro needles. - Hey, as somebody who just got micro needles done, can you tell, can you tell, do you see the world?

- This bud of skin. All right, so we thought we could start off by playing some chef/medical examiner questions. - Yes. - Do you want to just go back and forth on these?

- Yeah. - All right, I'll start. - So Riley, if Kay came into your restaurant pop up,

Kiko, everybody listening, after solving a brutal case,

what would you cook for her to restore her faith

in humanity? - It's a tall order.

It's a tall order, but I think I'm up to the test.

- I think you are. - So she is our Italian queen, so I had to do a pasta, of course. So I think I would do a red wine braised, short rib ragu.

- Oh, she's so like fresh. - May pop up. - Pop up. - Oh. - And just like some slutty garlic bread.

- Yeah! - Because like, you can't go wrong with that. And that would restore my faith. - Yeah, right. - And like, maybe a little side of Barada

for Duncan was the best one. And then, I don't think we touched on it in the book. But I feel like she loves dark chocolate. - Oh, yeah. - Brian, yeah.

- Don't you think she likes snacks on dark chocolate? - Oh, yeah. - So I feel like a dark chocolate buddhino, like an Italian pudding with a little olive oil and flaky salt.

- Oh, that's a chef. - Oh, I'm a real chef, guys. - Yeah, I promise. - Yeah, I'm a real chef. - I am a real chef, that's my job.

- And then it's her new fun. - And then it's her new fun. - That's a brilliant meal. And that, that, like, checks off the assignment. That would restore her faith in humanity.

- She feels like life is worth living. - Yeah, she feels like, you know what? - It's all fine. - Yeah. - What's it going to be good?

- How long do you cook your short ribs for? - Okay, I mean, it'll depend the size, but like, three hours, two and a half, three hours. It's a bigger, you might need to go up to like, three and a half. - That's what I do, three and a half.

- Yeah. - So long as they're like fall apart,

I mean, you can always just like chuck them back

in the oven and cook them. - Yeah, yeah.

- That's what the beauty of short ribs are.

- I know, short ribs. - I do too. - I think that would be my last meal, I sure. - Ooh.

- And like garlic mashed potatoes. - Damn, yeah, you gotta have to take this out of the way. - Next time, that's what you're coming back for. - Next time, that's what you're coming back for. - Yeah, that's what you're coming back for.

- I was about to say, can we just go to the kitchen right now? - Yeah, let's go. - Use the fridge to see what it has. - I was no leave-end.

- Perfect. - Bye, bye. - So the next question is a strange one, but I used to work in a morgue. Obviously, everybody listening goes that.

- What? - A casual draw. - I know. - But you didn't like it. - It was fun.

- Yeah, it was fun. - And between cases, you get hungry. - Okay. - And you have to go back to the office and you gotta eat something real quick.

And you need something that's gonna like keep you going. - So what would you make for a cascarpetta to bring you some more snack? - Can I give a chaotic answer? - Yeah, literally like water.

- Can I kiss her? - I feel like you have to avoid meat. - Yeah. - Yeah, I feel like that's true.

- I'm hoping I'm prodding around on a dead body.

So I'm going with a tofu curry or something. Because it's gonna be filling. You get your protein hit. - Okay. - And I feel like also you might want something aromatic

to kind of mask the smell of the more. So like a lemon grassy red curry tofu with some rice. And you don't want to be picking anything up. I don't think either. You don't want to be eating with your hands.

- Yeah, so you can spoon. So that's, I know that's like a little. - No, I love that. - But I like it. - I really love that. - Especially the lemon flavor.

- A little brightness. - Yeah, a little brightness. - Yes. - 'Cause a little stale in there. - A little stale.

- A little mustard. - Yeah. - You came home a few times spelling. Interesting. - Oh yeah.

- And I came up the one of the things that's great. - She was just a little side thing. Is the smell will you get your throat? - So when you-- - I'm sorry.

- I'm sorry. - It's later. - It should taste like the smell. I went out to dinner with John once after like a shift. - And they shower and I done all the things and I was sitting there eating.

And I was like, it's taste like this. - I'm a little more to find it out. - Yeah, that's crazy.

- I heard that story a million times and I would fight every day.

- I'd fair enough. My own experience like that is that I used to work like the fish station at a restaurant. - Oh, oh. - You just smell like fish.

- Yep. - It's just for me. - You're using gloves, you're like washing hands obviously, but it's just like you can't get rid of it. - And it's just in your--

- In your nostril. - Like you cannot get rid of it. - Drew, my husband worked out the fish counter at the grocery market and I don't know why I just said the grocery market at the grocery market.

- The grocery store market. - Yeah. - All of the money. - The grocery market. - The local grocery market.

- Yeah. - Like he had a pair of shoes that I would not want. - It's my bedroom. - I was like, get those. - There's like scales on it.

- No. - They were one with the ocean. (laughing) - I just shot them back in the ocean. - Oh my God.

- It was so gross. - That I had shoes as well, that had to stay outside. - Yep. - I remember that. - Outside shoes, yeah.

- Yeah, it was like take them off. - I'm gonna give you this next question too because it's just like for you to ask it. - Oh yeah. - So, again in the morgue,

I was like shocked to see that we used things from like lows or home depot at times. - Not really. - 'Cause they just worked better. - So we used like literal hedge clippers

with like the orange handles as rib cutters. - You have to be strong to do that too. - You have to be like real strong. - She's done. - She's the laner.

- Especially the clavicle. - She's doing those. - Oh no. - But the clavicle especially. - That's like that's a two cut one.

- But yeah, they're kinda good. - Just the cleanest leverage. - And those hedge clippers give you good leverage 'cause they have the big handles.

I was shocked by that.

But what is something in a kitchen

that we would kind of be shocked to see what it is used for it's my God. - You're on eating something normal or something? - You're gonna just barfe. (laughing)

- Okay, well, I'm only divulging my husband's secret

because I think this is one of his little party trick things.

He brings up all the time. - I love that. - He has gross feet. - Okay. - Poor Ryan has gross feet, but you know what?

- He embraces it and he laughs about it. - Okay, yeah. - One day, I saw him in the bathroom with a microplane, grading his feet. You know what a microplane is?

This actually is. - Yeah. - grading his feet. - Like up the nail salon. - Like up the nail salon.

- It's a literal, that she's grader. - Like her planes, that's her. - And you said that's my doll. - And I was like, "Bake, babe." - And that's what, not what that's for.

- But it is what it is. - It literally is. - It's for both. - It's for both.

- But you shouldn't use them for both.

- No, it's for both, but you get one for that. - And one for the kids. - You said anything, so that's not the kind of Parmesan cheese we need. - Oh, sorry.

- That's too far. - I like how skews me. - I thought it was that more bad. - I've cut my ribs with head to head. - So that one, yeah.

- I do believe that the microplane was originally made for woodworking, though. - Oh. - So it was like used to like finish edges of black cabinets and stuff as it took it like a form.

- It's like a multi, multi used to be cheese. - Cheese cheese. - Double cheese. - Wow. - But cheese, we're going to cheese.

- Offering cheese. - I like that. - I like that. - Okay moving on from food cheese. - Okay, moving on from food cheese.

- We don't know. - We don't know. - We don't know. - We don't know. - We love a full circle.

- Yeah. - Yeah, it is on top.

- And then we're getting there.

So the script had his work obviously involved studying what somebody ate before they died. As a chef, would it make you kind of nervous

that your cooking could end up being in an autopsy report?

- So I think what makes me nervous about that is that somebody would like see it and be like, oh, that was not cooked properly. Like they judged the way that I put. Like can you imagine there was like

yellow reviews that like, that were like, oh, the stomach contents were not prepared by the chef. - Oh my god. - That chef.

- That chef. - Is that a chef? - Is that a chef? - Do you have a star for whoever cooked like? - What would you have would end up?

And like what would your best meal be? That would be in an autopsy report later. - Oh my god. - That you'd be like, that's mine. Like you think it would be wild me.

- What feels like that's like getting asked like what your favorite thing to cook is which is every chef's works, right, my favorite question. But I will say, I love cooking Mexican food and there's a sauce called mole in like,

what can food? - Oh yeah. - Well, how can this my like all-time favorite type of Mexican? - But yeah, if I could like nail a mole and somebody open up and they're like,

oh, smells like a delicious Mexican mole. - Yeah. - I do. - I'm feeling jealous. - Yeah.

- I'm feeling jealous. - They're blessed. You lost crazy. - They're like, does anyone have chips? - Yeah.

- Yeah. - Like, take up chips. - Oh my god. - Oh, that's a good one. - That's a good one.

- That is a good one. - That's like one of my pride enjoys. I make a good mole. And it's a hard thing to make. - I was gonna say that.

- Yeah. - It's like flavor intensive. Lots of ingredients. He's lots of balancing going on. - Oh, hell yeah. Yeah, next time you come back, you got it.

- I know. - You've answered three food questions and I'm like, I came in a moment. - I came empty handed except for a booky up there. - There are both.

- It's not food. - It's not empty handed. - I won't eat him. - I broke. - Just in the moment.

- Ode did try to bite. I only have like two of those and Ode tried to bite one of their legs. - Oh, oh, oh, oh. - I was in my dog. - I used to have a dog named Ode too.

- You did. - You didn't feel like dog Ode. - And he was like half wolf. He was like an insane dog. Ode is half like baked potato. He's like, he's a pit ball but his legs are like three inches long.

So he's like really stumpy and loaded around. - Yeah, he has a little like flipper paws. - I love him. - He's broke you. - Oh my god, I was down my way for him.

- I know, I literally broke him. - Is he like half weird, aren't you? - We think he is like Dawson or like hound of some sort. Yeah, 'cause he has like the little flipped out front feet. - Stop it, I know.

- I loved him. - But the pity fades. - A little potato. - Oh, I love it. - I'm obsessed.

- We don't even talk about it. - Not at all. - Oh, so onto the next question. So I'll just talk about dogs for four minutes.

But if you could cook a meal inspired by the book post-mortem, what would be on the menu?

- Okay, there's so many ways that this one could go, but I do a thing for my client's pancake friday. We have pancakes. - I literally love that you're going here. - We just cut his cake.

- Did you? - Yeah. - They're a perfect food. - Oh, I love it. - Oh, I love it. - So, I hope they're your favorite.

- Yeah, so a fat sack of pancakes, some maple whip butter and some maple glaze bacon. - Oh, wow. - Because what is the disease called the maple syrup? - The maple syrup? - Yes.

- The maple syrup came up so frequently. It's like a maple tree. The killer, like what is going on here? - I came in here the other day and I go maple syrup. - Do you realize that?

- I literally googled because I was like that is made of. - It's not. - It's not.

- When just crazy.

- Yeah, I've never heard of that before.

That's a perfect meal for this. - Yeah. - So you know, you started in a, I love, I'm obsessed with that. - You gotta go with the bapes. - Yeah.

- All right, a next question. So both chefs and forensic pathologists obviously work with knives and anatomy. Very different ways, but they both work in that area.

What is the closest moment you've had in the kitchen that felt like a science experiment?

Either gone wrong or right. Doesn't have to be one or the other. - Okay, so bread baking is such a science experiment for me. And I've had it go perfectly where you get the crustiest, most beautiful sourdough bed ever. - Do the little crunch.

- Yeah, the crunch doesn't springs back and you get the good airballs. But then I've also had it go completely the opposite direction where it's like literally a goopy blobby mess. - Yep. - And that's like, it's literally science and you're just makes sense. In my head, I don't understand how it works.

- Alainus, so horrified by sourdough starters. She's like afraid of myself. - 'Cause it's gonna come to life in the back of your fridge. - I don't know what you mean. - What do you mean?

- Like what you mean? And then she'll be like, I mean this with my sourdough. But you fed it. - It fed it. - So you fed it.

- I do think it's gonna eat it. - Personified a little more than it is.

- It is very, it's not really just yeast-

- And I think that's the problem I have with it. - Yeah. - The personification of sourdough. - So I am part of the problem. - It's a shout, sourdough sharder.

(laughter) - Such a place of sharder. - You guys are really certain left and right. - It's very easy to say sharder. - I don't know.

- Say it again. - One more time. (laughter) - Say it again. One more time.

(laughter) - She's crying. (laughter) - That's probably how I feel about sourdough sharders. - I'm not sure if it's a lot.

- Yeah. - I'm blushing. - This is me, is yours named or no? - I have an end of mine. - Oh, so you're not part of the problem.

- Mine's named your part of the answer. - My tilde. - Yeah, she's a bad bitch. - I get it. - And that's thing.

You'll talk about feeding a tilde. - You know what? I've been like, Loki's starving. - Okay, well, can I just throw it out there that people are also so scared.

You have to feed it every week and be honest.

- I've left mine in the fridge for months. - Oh, mine's been in the fridge for many, many months. - Many months. - I have one on the counter right now that looks fine to me. And I haven't felt like a week.

- You're probably not going to use it. - But I think they're more forgiving than people think they're. - Probably, I think they're not. - I think so. - They're terrifying.

I don't know why. (laughter) - You don't like, I wonder if you have that phobia of the bubble. - Oh, a trip of phobia? No, that's the holes.

Is that the same thing? - I don't really know where to say it about the holes. But you don't like that at like gurgles. I don't like that it feels alive. That's the way that it feels like.

And then you're like, eat this bread that I made from that. Like, I think that's where my, you do like the bread. I love the bread. - Thank you. - That's sort of a problem.

- Would be on my final death room. I'm just hot, sourdough bread with buttercream. - I'm very committed. - I don't know what I'm saying. - It's kind of, yeah.

- And it's kind of a feel conflicted. - And it shows how kind you are that you care about. I'm gonna tell those things. - This is a safe space. - It's true.

I care about but don't let it go. I'm just very, it's crying. I don't like what it does like, they stop. It's really upset. - Oh, so what?

What ingredient would absolutely give you away. If you try to commit a culinary crime. Like, what is your fingerprint in ingredient form? - That's a clever question. I like this a lot.

- Thank you. - I love lemon zest. - Oh. - I put, I, with my kitchen microplane. (laughing)

- He said the kitchen my father. Seriously, like lemon zest, or citrus zest in general, is just like such a great way to like give a ton of aromatic, like bursts of flavor. Like, also if you don't want to like that really acidic juice,

sometimes it's just like a nice little breakfast room. - That's true. - I am a freak. Like, it became a joke on set when we were doing the photos for the book. Jillian, the guy that was the food size with me.

She would be like lemon zest on us. - Yeah, the thrill of lemon zest. - All of it. - And it looks pretty. - It's crazy.

- It's like adds a little of flavor. - That's cold. - Yeah. - I love that. - Yeah.

- I love that a lot. - Yeah. - I think she would be mine. - Cheese. - Just all purpose cheese.

- Yes. - It's cheese. There's like that's her. I think garlic be mine. - Oh yeah.

- I put garlic in everything. - Yeah. - And I love extra garlic. - Oh, hell yeah. - If it's like too close.

- No, no. - Just say like garlic measure with your heart. - That's literally. - Yeah. - That's vanilla extract.

- Yeah. - I'm dreadful. - Oh, whenever I bake, I do double the vanilla and double the salt. - Oh, double the salt.

- Double the salt. - Like cookies, chocolate, chocolate, cookies. - Oh, crap. - Toad of salt.

- I always shopped them with salt.

- Oh, you got it. - The best. - Oh, that's good to know. I love that. Hell yeah.

I guess now we can get into the book. - Yeah. - She's going to have a book. - Talked about that. - So what do we think of the book?

- 90s, incredible, strong women. Like I walked away with it being like women, empowering other women. - Yeah.

- How many times are you coming together to be badass?

- Yeah. - Like that was how it closed for me and I looked at it. - 'Cause I love that it ended with Kay, Abby, and Lucy. - Yeah. - Like all coming to you.

- Yes. - And how much and see ended up helping? - I know. - Yes. - That little girl.

- I have to confess at one point. One thing I love about the book too is it took me on so many journeys of who I thought did it.

- Yep.

- And at one point I was blaming little Lucy. - I was like the 10-year-old girl is definitely not the killer. But in my head I was like, she might have done it. - I've actually broken into the star base for sure.

I was like, I don't know why, but I think she did.

- But it was so clever the way she would like weave everybody's story and then I was like, "Oh, I'm sure it's this person." And then no, now I'm sure it's this person. - He's so good at that.

- Yes. - They were so good at that. - There was so many times, especially like the further along we got into it that I thought it was Bill. I really, really thought it was Bill.

- He's fleed. I was like, Bill sucks ass. - I was pissed.

I didn't feel like from the second question.

- I didn't feel like he got his in. - I agree. - You know what I mean? - I agree. - Like I want, I want somebody to pummel him.

- Yeah. - I think Abby's gonna take care of him. - Abby's gonna pummel him. - And is it Amber G. - I think so.

- Yeah. - Yeah. - I wanted to pummel that the worst. - Just men being horrible. - I also thought that it was Wingo at a certain point.

- You did. - Yes. - That nobody was safe. Nobody was safe in my brain. - No.

- Not even little Lucy. - You're like that bitch is up for like crazy. - She was just nine people. Like Dale. - She's strong ten year old.

- She's strong ten year old. - She's leaving Simon. - She's leaving Simon. - I was just gonna say. - She's just leaving Simon.

- She's just leaving Simon.

- That's why she's coming in the morgue.

- She's a booger. - She's a booger. Hands on non-secretary. She's like, what's this? I guess I'll throw it on people.

- I guess I'll throw it on. - Oh my god. - Oh my god. - It doesn't make me blush a lot. - Little girl's love.

- So the maple syrup also, the syrup smells. - That's true. - And there's oyster. They are all sticky. - It's smelly.

- Yeah. - It's smelly. - Yeah. - It's smelly. - It's smelly.

- It's smelly. - It's smelly. - It's smelly. - It's smelly. - It's smelly.

- It's smelly. - Yeah. - It's smelly. - It's smelly. - I love the foam.

- Of course. - Of course. - I love it. But I do love to that. They made marino, like, like, such a foil in the beginning.

And then at the end, he ends up, like, standing up for her. - I like saving her house. - Yeah. And then saving her. - Thank God.

Because there had to be one good, like, straight man to come through. Like, do something to, like, restore her face a little bit. - And it was, like, questionable for most people. Because, like, he said, and they're being, like, god damn woman when he walks away. And you're like marino.

- Yeah. - Marino's, like, uh, he's a main today. - I really like you. - Oh, interesting.

This is my first book that I've read in the series.

I'm definitely going to read more about it. It's interesting to see, like, which characters come back. - Yeah. - Yeah. - It's really fun.

- And you said you know, see, as I mean, it becomes a very big character. - Oh. - Pretty bad. - Okay, fun. - She's fun.

- I feel like she's going to grow up to be, like, a computer hacker. - Yeah. - Like, one of the good ones. - She works fine on us. - Yeah.

- There you go. You know, close up. - I love that theory. I love that, like, throughout the book.

It's like, there's, I think there's a lot of, like,

cabing, like, science and logic. And, like, we need to look at this, like, this and marino's, the one that's, like, I'm going off of instinct. And I think it's this, like, I have street smarts. - Yeah.

- So let's go this way. - One to school hard not. - Yeah. He's, like, I know this. He was wrong for most of the book with his instincts,

and she was right. And then in the end, it flipped and his instincts had him show up to safer. - Yep. - So I like that they gave him both.

- Totally. - And it was almost like confirming, like, you need both sides. Yeah, you can't just be one of the other. - It's so true. And just the way their relationship developed,

because, like, I think when she first found out that he was driving by her house, she thought it was because he wanted to be like, "Oh, how much does the chief medical exam make and, like, he wanted to judge her?"

- Yeah. - But he actually just had this instinct to pretend. - Yeah, you just were saying. - Yeah. - I love them together.

- I know. - He told me that I was going to love Bruno, so I was like, as I was thinking through, I was like, all right, not yet. - You would have told me that at the beginning, I would not.

- I was like, I was like, I was going to give him a moment. - Yeah. - And then I did. And I did. And now I'm like, I love Bruno.

- Oh, yeah. - Yeah. - Love him. I had so many theories about who the killer was. Throughout this, like, we were just talking.
