to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

Yield a news conference this morning. Heggseth says the U.S. did not start the war, but President Trump is finishing it. And Pierre's Greg Myri says the U.S. and his really strikes have had an effect on Iran's leadership. It knocked out several Iran's Supreme Leader and other top leaders.

So will that be sufficient? Will the U.S. try to help install somebody else? So he did leave open a lot of questions about what the goals are. And Pierre's Greg Myri reporting. President Trump has spoken to several media outlets, but he has not yet made a clear case

to Americans about why his administration is joining with Israel to attack Iran.

And while the Pentagon says a fourth U.S. service person has died of wounds from attacks by Iran, three other U.S. military personnel were killed over the weekend.

Israel's military continues striking in Iran's capital, Tehran, as Iran's missile strikes

on Israel have decreased. And Pierre's Daniel Estrin has more from Tel Aviv. The Israeli military says it has bombed the headquarters of Iran's intelligence ministry responsible for domestic spying on Iranians and for plotting attacks against Israelis and Jews abroad.

Israel says it also killed senior Iranian intelligence officials. Iran continues targeting Israel with missiles, but in a briefing to reporters and Israeli military spokesmen argued, Israel and the U.S. have degraded Iran's capabilities.

Has Bala fired rockets and drones at Israel and Israel has retaliated.

The war and the Gulf has effectively shut down the straight of Hormuz.

That is the narrow waterway through which one-fifth of the world's oil passes. And Pierre's A.A. betrroy has the latest from Dubai. Iran's counter-attacks in the region have now expanded to energy targets in the Gulf. After energy says attacks on two of its facilities forced the state-owned company to halt production of LNG gas Monday.

Qatar is one of the world's biggest exporters of gas. Also, oil giant Saudi Arabia says it shot down drones targeting its biggest oil refinery in the country's east. The military says debris caused a fire and that some refinery units were shut down as a precaution.

Meanwhile, four vessels have been hit in Gulf waters since the war began Saturday. The latest was a tanker carrying nearly 600,000 barrels of gasoline-bound force Saudi Arabia according to Windward, a maritime intelligence platform. Oh, Monty's security say the attack sparked a fire killing one Indian crew member. I April Troy and Pierre News, Dubai.

On Wall Street, the dials down 240 points. This is NPR. Human rights activists say Afghanistan's ruling Taliban have issued new rules. They say that men can beat their wives, as long as they don't break bones or leave visible lasting wounds.

The decree was issued last month, but was recently translated into English. A wife can't appeal to an Afghan judge, but Afghan women already cannot leave their homes without a male guardian. One of the final award shows prior to the Oscars has handed out its honors. Steve Futterman reports on the screen Actors Guild Worts, which are seen as an indicator

of this year's Oscar winners. It was a big night for a Gothic horror film set in the 1930s Jim Crow South. Samuel L. Jackson made the announcement, sinners won the top prize, best cast in emotion picture. Earlier, the star of sinners, Michael B. Jordan won for best male actor in the feature film.

This ride has been unbelievable. Thank you for welcoming in and making me feel. Other winners included Jesse Buckley, she won best female actor in the feature film for a hymnet, in the TV categories, the studio won three awards, including one for Catherine O'Hara, who died in January.

For NPR news, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles. Many NPR employees are members of the SAG after Union. Scientists say there will be a lunar eclipse overnight. It will be best visible around 6am Eastern time tomorrow morning and 3am Pacific time. I'm Corva Coleman, NPR News.
