President Trump says the U.S. military has rescued the missing airman whose F-15E plane was shot down over Iran Friday.
“The Air Force officer was extracted in a massive operation involving hundreds of military”
personnel. The other crew member was rescued earlier, and here's Greg Myri has more.
Trump said the Iranians were closing in on him, but the U.S. forces found him first.
They picked him up, flew him out of Iran, Trump says he's safe and sound though we don't know exactly where he is or the extent of his injuries. Do a lot of details we don't know. The New York Times is reporting that two U.S. planes landed to pick up the injured colonel and the other troops, but we're not able to fly out.
And here's Greg Myri. Israeli attacks have killed at least 39 people across Lebanon today, according to health officials there.
“As Lauren Freyer reports, one of the biggest attacks targeted Beirut's southern suburbs,”
where Iran-backed Hezbollah has offices.
Residents posted this video to social media showing people covered in gray dust, fearing the wounded out of a collapsed building on slings may to blankets. Israel often issues evacuation orders, but this attack in Beirut's coastal area of Janineh came without warning, hitting a dense residential area near a public hospital. The officials say a four-year-old girl was among those killed in another Israeli air strike
near the coastal city of Siden, which has absorbed thousands of displaced people from farther south, Israel had warned her entire village to flee. And a Vatican-led aid convoy was canceled on Easter Sunday for security reasons. It was trying to bring aid to Christian villages under siege and southern Lebanon, where fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli ground troops is heaviest.
Are in fire and PR news Beirut.
“Russian authorities report more damage to energy infrastructure, following another round”
of Ukrainian drone strikes. And here's Charles Mains reports from Moscow, Ukraine has stepped up attacks in recent weeks, and in attempt to prevent the Kremlin from benefiting from surging global energy prices since the Iranian war started. The governor of Russia's northwestern Leningrad region said Ukrainian drones caused a fuel leak
at the Baltic Sea port of Primorsk, the latest in a series of attacks that have slowed shipments of oil out of one of Russia's largest export hubs. Separately authorities in the Nishni Novkutad region to the east of Moscow reported Ukrainian drone strikes caused a massive fire at one of Russia's largest oil refineries. The uptick in attacks comes as part of a wider Ukrainian effort to limit Russia's financial
windfall from the US-N Israel's decision to attack Iran. That war has brought soaring global energy prices and new customers for Russian oil and gas at a moment when Russia's economy had been struggling due to Western sanctions. During Easter Mass at the Vatican, Pope Leo made a passionate appeal against the conflicts that rage in the world today, saying humans must not resign themselves to what he calls the sevel. NPR's Ruth Sherlock has more. At an altar, the top of steps laden with flowers in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican,
Pope Leo led prayers in Christianity's most joyous celebration. In his service Leo described Easter as victory of life over death. The Pope's achievements are growing accustomed to violence, resigning ourselves to it and becoming indifferent to the deaths of thousands of people and, quote, repercussions of hatred.
He made this Easter a passionate appeal for true peace, Ruth Sherlock and Piano's. At the weekend box office, the Super Mario Galaxy movie took the top spot with an estimated $130 million in ticket sales. That's the biggest opening of the year for a Hollywood film. The illumination and Nintendo co-production capitalized on kids' spring-break vacations
and, despite mixed reviews, audiences seemed happy. The movie features returning voice actors, Chris Pratt, and Jack Black.
In second place, Project Hail Mary with $30 million globally, it's already taken in more
than $420 million. I'm Janine Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
