Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst.
President Trump says the U.S. military carried out a dramatic and risky rescue of the Air Force
“officer whose fighter jet was shot down over Iran.”
As NPR's Greg Mayri reports, the wounded officer took cover in a mountainous area to avoid being captured. President Trump said on truth social that dozens of planes took part in the operation to save the airment after his F-15 fighter jet was hit over Western Iran on Friday. The plane's pilot was quickly rescued, but the weapons officer, an Air Force Colonel,
had to go into hiding. Trump wrote, quote, "This brave warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran. U.S. rescue aircraft came under fire, but managed to reach the airment and fly him out of the country.
The Wall Street Journal reported that two planes taking part in the rescue were unable to fly out of Iran, so U.S. troops blew them up and left on another aircraft. Greg Mayri, NPR News, Washington."
“The state of Hormuz remains largely closed, stranding oil tankers and pushing up the price”
of crude oil and gasoline. Triple A says the average price of a gallon of gasoline, nationwide is now $4.11. President Trump says those gas prices will immediately go down once the war with Iran ends. But David Goldland, former energy envoy for the State Department and Assistant Secretary
of Energy, says, "That won't happen." Oil's a globally priced commodity, so even though we won't have a physical shortage here
because we've got Canada for heavy oil and we produce our own, the reality is that the
price is global and there's a real physical shortage, and so we don't escape that price impact and that translates to what it costs to be refinered to buy the crude and therefore what you pay for gasoline at the pump, so we are not immune from that." Speaking there too, NPR's weekend edition. Union leaders for U.S. Postal Service Workers are raising concerns about President Trump's
“new executive order, calling for restricting voting by mail.”
And Piers Hansi Lohong reports the order also faces multiple lawsuits to block it. President Trump's executive order calls for his administration to create lists of adult U.S. citizens in each state and also calls for banning the U.S. Postal Service from delivering mail and ballots to anyone not on those lists. And their lawsuits, Democrats, voting rights groups, and almost two dozen states, argue
that Constitution gives state legislatures and Congress not the president, the power to set rules for federal elections. DMS and the National Royal Literary Careers Association says the order would weaponize the Postal Service to determine a voter's eligibility. "It's going to cost confusion and it could cause further delays in the daily handling of
the mail and the daily routine and work of a postal worker." Trump says his order is trying to stop illegal voting by non-citizens and federal elections, a problem that numerous studies have shown is incredibly rare on Zila Wong and Piers News.
