"Live from NPR News and Washington, on Corv.

Trump suggested that the leaders of Lebanon and Israel may speak for the first time in decades.

It's not clear this will happen. Israel has invaded and bombed southern Lebanon, it says, "to fight Iran's proxy militia has been lost. Today Israel renewed evacuation orders for Lebanese civilians to flee. Pakistan's army chief has arrived in Iran. Pakistan is continuing its mediation efforts between Iran and the U.S. Betsy Joel's reports from Islamabad, President Trump has suggested a second round of peace talks could be held in Pakistan."

The timing of possible talks remains uncertain, however, as three of Pakistan's key mediators

were outside of the country on Wednesday. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Ismail Bakai told Iranian state media that exchanges with the U.S. have continued through Pakistan after an initial round of talks in Islamabad last weekend and did without a deal. For NPR News,

I'm Betsy Joel's in Islamabad."

"You as Catholic bishops have taken the extraordinary step of issuing a statement, clarifying the church's teaching on the philosophy known as the "just war," and Beer's Jason D'Rose reports, this comes after Vice President Vance advised Pope Leo to, quote, "be careful when giving his opinion on matters of theology." In the midst of a day's long back and forth over Iran, the U.S. Conference of Catholic

bishops writes, quote, "For over a thousand years, the Catholic Church has taught just war theory, and it is that long tradition, the Holy Father carefully references in his

comments on war. The church holds that nation should only take up the sword in self-defense

once all peace efforts have failed. The bishops conclude with this stern review. When

Pope Leo the 14th speaks, quote, "He is not merely offering opinions on theology, he is

preaching the gospel, and exercising his ministry as the vicar of Christ." Jason D'Rose and PR News "I'm federal employee, he's say the Trump administration is blocking their work on housing discrimination. Empires Jennifer Leiden reports a union that represents them has launched a website with anonymous letters that begin, D'Romerica."

The letters express concern about cases they say investigators have been forced to drop. They also describe a culture of fear that's keeping them anonymous. Last year, HUD fired fair housing will sublower Paul Osdabe, a civil rights lawyer and union steward who helped put out these letters. "We're not being allowed to help the people that were supposed to be serving."

HUD's Secretary Scott Turner has accused the Biden administration of twisting the law by focusing on D.E.I. "There are so many Americans who are racist until a proven innocent." Osdabe says political interference goes beyond HUD, and he hopes employees at other agencies also speak up, Jennifer Leiden and PR News Washington. "You're listening to NPR."

The Pentagon says the U.S. military has conducted another boat strike in the eastern Pacific Ocean, the military says it killed three alleged drug traffickers yesterday but provided no evidence of their ties to drug smuggling. There's a special congressional election today for one New Jersey district. The winner will fill the house seat vacated by Mikey Cheryl when she took office as New Jersey governor.

From Member Station WNYC, Mike Hayes reports. "Democratic nominee Analyamahia is a progressive activist and the daughter of immigrants. She wants to abolish ICE, pass Medicare for all, and clawback President Trump's tax cuts for billionaires." Republican Joe Hathaway is a suburban town council member.

The 38-year-old moderate Republican has not been afraid to criticize Trump on issues like immigration enforcement and tariffs. Democrats are more optimistic heading into tonight in this left-leaning district, which Mikey Cheryl won easily the past four elections.
