News. A two-week ceasefire expires at 8 o'clock Eastern Time tonight. A U.S. delegation led by Vice President Vance has expected in Pakistan for negotiations with Iran. However, Iranian officials continue to indicate they do not plan to take part in another round of talks with the U.S. A U.N. study estimates Gaza needs $71 billion for reconstruction and recovery. NPR's A-Betraway says a third of that total is needed immediately for
critical infrastructure. A new assessment by the U.N. World Bank and European Union notes
that more than 370,000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or damaged in Israeli attacks, leaving more than a million people without homes. Most people in Gaza now live in makeshift tents made out of sticks and plastic tarps. Israeli troops meanwhile occupy around half of Gaza and have leveled thousands more homes there they say to dismantle Hamas tunnels. The study
“also says around 75% of all people in Gaza who were employed before the war are now without”
jobs, relying on aid to survive. It notes Gaza has the lowest levels ever recorded globally on the human development index which measures life expectancy standards of living and access to education, Ayah Petraway and Pyrenees, Dubai. Authorities in Mexico were investigating a shooting at one of the country's historic pyramids north of Mexico City. They say a man with a gun open fire yesterday killing a tourist
from Canada, more than a dozen people were injured not all by gunfire, at least six of those taken to hospitals where identified as Americans. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, says he plans to step down in September and PR's John Ruich has more. Tim Cook became CEO 15 years ago with big shoes to fill. He succeeded Apple's visionary
founder Steve Jobs, Cook had been at Apple for years. He's best known for overhauling Apple's manufacturing operations and embedding its supply chain deeply in China. Now Cook will hand the reins to John Ternis, a senior vice president at the company. Ternis has led hardware engineering teams for almost all of Apple's best known products, including the iPhone and the Mac computer. The leadership change takes place at the start of September
with Cook leaving Ternis some significant challenges, including on artificial intelligence where Apple is playing catch up. John Ruich and PR News President Trump's nominee to succeed Jerome Powell as chairman of the Federal Reserve is due to appear on Capitol Hill today, Kevin Worst, a scheduled to testify before the Senate Banking Committee. Boaters in Virginia are going to the polls today to decide whether to support a proposed constitutional amendment resulting in a newly drawn congressional map. The changes are backed by the state's governor, Democrat Abigail Spanberger, as well as Democratic lawmakers and Richmond. The new map would likely flip several Republican seats in Congress. Democrats argue the move is in response to President Trump, who urged Republican-led states, including
Texas and Missouri, to redraw their congressional maps to help the GOP. A runner from Kenya
is celebrating his second consecutive win in the men's professional division at the Boston
Marathon. He crossed the finish line in record time yesterday as Estaband Bustios with Member Station GBH reports. Kenya's John Corrier broke the course record with the time of two hours, one minute and fifty-two seconds. That's over a minute better than the previous record. And at first, he wasn't aware he'd made history.
Each of the top three finishers on the men's side ran times that were better than the previous high-mark. Corrier repeated as champion, as did Sharon Loceti, who set the women's division course record last year. Marseille Houg picked up his ninth victory in the men's wheelchair division and Eden Rainbow Cooper won the Women's Wheelchair Race
for the second time. For NPR News, I'm Estaband Bustios in Boston.
