"Live from MPR News in Washington, I'm Noraram.
U.S. negotiators are heading to Pakistan today, for a possible new round of talks on ending the war in Iran.
“Special envoy Steve Whitkoff and President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are part”
of the delegation. The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Islamabad, but the Iranian government says he won't meet directly with the U.S. NPR's Cat-Lan store has been following the talks from Beirut Lebanon. He says it appears Iran and the U.S. are at an impasse.
Neither side seems to be buddhine. Defense Secretary Hegsev said yesterday that the U.S. will maintain the blockade around the street for, quote, "as long as it takes," the U.S. says it's intercepting any ships coming to or from Iranian ports more than 30 so far. You know, that's as Iran has maintained its military control of the street itself, keeping
most commercial ships from passing through.
So basically, most ships are stuck, and we're waiting to see if these indirect talks in Pakistan
can possibly help unlock that situation. NPR's Cat-Lan store, Ukrainian officials say Russia attacked overnight using dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones. Authorities say at least five people were killed and at least 34 wounded. NPR's clinical humanitarian reports.
Dreska Cruz worked to clear a rubble at the site of an attack on an apartment building in NPR in central Ukraine. The city was hit with ballistic missiles and drones, damaged residential areas, civilian infrastructure, and causing fires. Ukraine's president, Vladimir Zelensky, wrote on social media that every satrashana text
should remind Ukraine's allies they need to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses so the country can defend itself from aerial strikes.
Russian forces also targeted critical facilities in Ukraine and southern and eastern regions.
Polina Lithuanova, and Bjar news. President Trump is allowing the Air Force to ignore water pollution requirements. So the military can continue training combat jets in the mountain west. Oregon Public Broadcasting's April Erlick has more. Trump says the military's supersonic flights are in the paramount interest to the country,
even if they plute rivers and threaten fish. His declaration comes nearly two months into the US is really war with Iran. For years, the military has been flying jets at the speed of sound over the awahi desert in Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. These supersonic jets release flares and clouds of aluminum-coated fibers called chaff,
which can throw off missiles. Three years ago, environmental groups sued the Air Force, saying it was pluding rivers with toxic metals. Trump's declaration allows the military to continue training in this high desert, even if it violates federal and local water pollution laws.
For in PR news, I'm April Erlick and Portland. This is NPR News in Washington. Gunfire erupted today in the West African country of Mali. The Army reports unidentified armed groups attacked in multiple locations, suggesting this was coordinated.
Mali has been hit with insurgencies from affiliates of Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State Group. In Britain, two of the stars of the 1970s comedy show "Monti Python's Flying Circus," attended the unveiling of a statue of their co-star, Terry Jones today. Jones died of a rare form of dementia six years ago.
Vicky Barker has more from London. The bronze statue detects Terry Jones in one of his comic guys' "The Newed Organist," Michael Pail and told the BBC all the surviving Python's as they're called "supported" the project, which was unusual, because they normally didn't agree on anything, except on what's funny.
“"I think all the Python's, you know, the formus is still around.”
Would see this as something essentially a perfect for Terry." The statue, in Jones' birthplace of colon bay whales, shows him clad only in a tie which flaps in the wind, hair a skew, head turned grinning broadly. His daughter says she hopes the locals will rest their cams on it while taking in the view.
For NPR News, I'm Vicky Barker, in London. President Trump is going out to dinner tonight to mingle with members of what he calls the fake news. He's to attend the annual dinner of the White House Correspondence Association. The dinner is held to celebrate freedom of the press.
During Trump's second term, he has sued several media outlets and personally attacked
journalists. I'm Nour Rama, NPR News, in Washington. Every episode of NPR is its bit-a-minute podcast, starts with a question about how culture shapes our lives.
“How are we spending too much on other people's weddings?”
