Several vessels made it through yesterday. Iran condemned the U.S. actions and fired missiles and drones at the United Arab Emirates.
One Iranian drone sparked a fire at a major oil port in the UAE leaving several injured. Russia and Ukraine say separate short-term ceasefires will take effect later this week. The suspension of attacks is to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II, as NPR's Charles Maynes reports from Moscow. Russia's defense ministry announced the ceasefire on orders of President Vladimir Putin. A ministry statement called on Ukraine to abide by the
“truce or face massive strikes on its capital key. The suggested Russian pause in fighting will”
extend May 8th to May 9th. As Russia and Ukraine hold separate events marking their shared Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. In response, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said Kiev would enter a ceasefire two days earlier and take further actions accordingly. All of this follows the Kremlin announcement. It will scale back its annual military parade on Red Square, citing fear of Ukrainian drone attacks, Russian air defenses have struggled to prevent.

Hotel bookings in the U.S. for the upcoming men's World Cup soccer tournament are running far below expectations. That's according to an
industry survey as NPR's Rafael Nama reports. The workup was seen as the big deal in the hotel industry. The tournament is being staged this summer across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, with 11 American cities hosting games. But an industry survey from the American hotel and lodging association shows that nearly 80% of hotels in host cities are saying
“booking some running below projections. For some cities, it gets even worse. Kansas City says that”
85% to 90% of hotels report booking are softer than anticipated. In fact, they are actually running even below a typical June or July. By contrast, hotels in both Miami and Atlanta report a much stronger number of bookings, Rafael Nama NPR News. The first World Cup matches get underway on June 11th. A spokesperson for Rudy Giuliani says the former mayor of New York City is now breathing on his own at a hospital near West Palm Beach, Florida. The 81-year-old remains in
critical but stable condition. Giuliani is being treated for pneumonia and has been taken off
