Live from NPR News in Washington, 9/4 of a Coleman, the U.

fire, the Pentagon says U.S. forces fired a missile at a ship to stop it from reaching

Iran's main "will" terminal on Haring Island, and PR's Aobitroy reports.

Iran fired missiles at U.S. forces in Kuwait and Bahrain, Kuwait says drones then hit its airport wounding several people.

Iran's revolutionary guards says the attacks last night were in response to U.S. strikes

on its Clisham Island near the street of Hermuz. The guard says it targeted the U.S. Navy's "fifthly in Bahrain" and air bases in Kuwait causing damage. U.S. Central Command says Iran's attacks failed to hit their target. St. Com also says it's attacks on a military-ground control station on Clisham Island

were "self-defense strikes" in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the region without specifying further. Meanwhile President Trump said the U.S. and Iran continued to exchange messages on a deal to "end the war." The White House says it is dropping a plan to create an nearly $1.8 billion fund.

This would be used to pay people who claim they were targets of political investigations.

NPR's Ryan Lucas says acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanch explained the decision

in congressional testimony yesterday. The Justice Department had put out a statement that it would abide by a court ruling, putting the fund on hold until at least June 12 while a lawsuit challenging it plays out in the court. And then at yesterday's hearing, Blanch was asked what the Department's plans were after that date.

He said that a department is dropping its plans for the fund's full stop. Now Blanch was asked to put that into writing, and he said in essence, he's no reason to do that, which was caused for a bit of skepticism. NPR's Ryan Lucas reporting. Six dates held primary elections yesterday.

That includes New Mexico, Katarina Barton reports from Santa Fe on the state's gubernatorial race. Former Interior Secretary Deb Holland won the Democratic nomination for New Mexico Governor. She beat out Bernalio County District Attorney Sam Braggman.

Holland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo.

If she wins in November, she will become the first Native American woman to serve as governor

in the country. They'll face Republican nominee Rio Rancho Mayor Greg Hol in the General Election. But he'll face an uphill battle. Republicans haven't won a statewide office in 10 years. Spending in the governor's primary set a record for the most expensive in state history.

The race also saw a high voter turnout, thanks to a new semi-open primary system. For MPR News, I'm Katarina Barton in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The California Governor's primary remains too close to called now. This is an unusual election, can that it's from all parties run together and the top two advanced to a November election.

So far, Republican Steve Hilton leads followed by Democrats Javier Bissera and Tom Stier. You're listening to NPR. President Trump is signed a slightly scaled back executive order on cybersecurity threats that could be posed by artificial intelligence. He recently put aside a similar order over concern it would interfere with the rapid

development of AI. Still Trump's new order is voluntary. It asks AI developers to submit certain kinds of AI models to government review about one month before these models are taken public. Game one of the NBA Finals tips off tonight, New York City is a buzz over the next.

They're playing for a title for the first time since 1999.

The next will face the San Antonio spurs and Pierre's Becky Sullivan has this preview. The finals are actually a rematch of that 1999 series between the NICS and the spurs. That was the first appearance in the finals for the Tim Duncan era spurs who won that one in five and went on to pick up four more titles in the years that followed. The NICS haven't had a drop of that success.

But now, stars, Jalen Brunson and Carl Anthony towns. They have storms their way back to the finals with a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The series will open in San Antonio where the NBA's newest superstar, Victor Wimbain Yamma, just led the spurs to a seven game thriller over the defending NBA champs, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

At seven foot four, Wimbie's presence on the floor has been a challenge for every offense that faced this postseason and since he's only 22, that challenge could last for years to come. Becky Sullivan and Pierre News. In men's pro hockey, the Stanley Cup final is underway.

And the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 last night in Raleigh, North Carolina. On Corva Coleman, NPR News and Washington.
