Defense Secretary Pete Hugseth is enormity to mark the 82nd anniversary of the D.D. landings.
“NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports Hugseth use the anniversary of the Allied defeat”
of Nazi Germany to emphasize that Europe must be responsible for its own security. At the American cemetery on a bluff above Omaha Beach, Hugseth said it is a strategic necessity for Europe to take the lead in its own security. Speaking against a backdrop of more than 9,000 American tombs, Hugseth called on Allies like France to seriously face this reality with concrete steps.
The U.S. has already pulled 5,000 troops out of Europe and the Trump administration has made it clear that U.S. priorities lie elsewhere. The ceremony at the American Cemetery at Colville Sermere took place several hours before the International Sermere, which Hugseth skipped, a citizen's association of one Normandy village protested Hugseth's visit, calling the appearance of quote, "A member of America's
far right, the wrong symbol on a day that celebrates the Allied unity, Eleanor Beardsley in Piano's Paris." This week in Congress, a number of House Republicans went against President Trump, voting
“to fund another $9.8 billion in military aid to Ukraine to fight against Russia.”
He was in Paris seeing a contributing Ron Elving. The House of this week, Trump wants a free hand to broker some sort of deal between those countries, so he was not in favor of this package of U.S. aid, and it was a shock when 18 Republicans in the House joined in approving it. The move comes as Ukraine targeted Russian naval arsenals and bases near St. Petersburg this weekend
on the final day of an international forum taking place in the former home town of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In California, Democrat Javier Bassera has the numbers to possibly become the first Latina
governor, but because ballots are still being counted, it's unclear who his opponent will be, former Fox News host of Hilton, who is backed by President Trump, is in second place, billionaire Tom Styer, a progressive Democrat, is in third, but Styer could still secure the second spot. Ron has accused America of discriminatory treatment and violating its obligations as a world
cub host for refusing visas to some of its football teams delegation, the BBC's Jacob Evans reports. There's less than a week to go until the World Cup kicks off, but the Iranian squad have already relocated their base from Arizona to the Mexican border city of Tejwana. Now according to Tehran's ambassador to Mexico, the team will not be allowed to enter the
US until match day, and will have to leave the very same day. The revelation came after Iranian media said, at least a dozen members of the team's support staff had been refused US visas. Iran's embassy in Turkey said the move represented the worst possible form of politically biased interference.
This is NPR. One month after winning the Kentucky Derby, Golden Temple once against said the pace, capturing
the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Aaron Shelo Levine with Member Station WAMC is at the Saratoga Race Course in Upstate New York with the latest. The three-year-old cult again made history, coming from behind to in Saturday's Belmont Stakes. That made Golden Temple a two-legged Triple Crown Race Champion this season, after not
running the pre-pressed stakes five weeks ago. In the first leg in May, trainer Shury Devo became the first woman to win the Kentucky Derby, a race Golden Temple won from the back of the pack. This weekend's victory came on home turf for Devo, as the Belmont was run for the third and final time in her hometown of Saratoga Springs, while its usual downstate home undergoes
a half billion dollar renovation.
Local track regular and carry said she'd bet on Devo's horse. "Yeah, you got to really go for the Saratoga League, although we don't really like them all." They'll decide between conservative Caco, Fujimori, the daughter of former President
Alberto Fujimori, or left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez. Fujimori critics say has contributed to the country's instability. Sanchez is lesser known and wants to drop a new constitution. The winner will become the ninth-proving president in ten years, showing just how fractured the country is politically.
