Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel today, the first such attack since a ceasefire

was declared two months ago, and here's Greg Myriek has more.

Israel said the Iranian missiles were directed at northern Israel, where warning sirens rang out on Sunday evening. The Israeli military said in a statement on X that it shot down in coming missiles, but it added that it had identified additional launches targeting Israel. Iran warned earlier that it might act due to the ongoing fighting between Israel and

Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that's closely allied with Iran. Hezbollah fired on northern Israel on Sunday morning, according to Israel. Several hours later, Israel carried out air strikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. Greg Myriek MPR News Tel Aviv.

In Maine, personal controversy is rocking Democrat Graham Platner, who's campaigning to be the party's Senate nominee to try to topple Republican incumbents who's in Collins and possibly retake the Senate. And here's Tamara Keith has more.

So this started with offensive old reddit post that he deleted.

Then last fall, there was a firestorm over a skull in crossbones tattoo. He got on his chest in 2007. He swore he didn't know the symbol was associated with the Nazis and got it covered with a wolf tattoo. Then last weekend, it came out that his wife revealed that early in their marriage, she

caught him sexting with a number of other women. Platner is fighting back and also explaining that a lot of his behavior was the result of difficulty adjusting to life after his military service. And Pierce Tamara Keith reporting, the primary takes place on Tuesday, and while Governor Janet Mills suspended her primary campaign, she's reminding voters her name's still on

the ballot though she's not actively campaigning. For nearly two weeks, protesters have clashed off and on with an array of law enforcement agencies and ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey, Bruce Conviser reports there's no end in sight to the standoff. Demonstrations broke out at the Delaney Hall facility late last month after detainees announced

the hunger strike to protest conditions inside the prison. Within days, U.S. Senator Andy Kim was given limited access to the facility. He founded detainees complaints to be credible. Kim was back at the detention center on Saturday, but was denied entry. This time was different because this time ICE refused to let me talk to any detainees.

They restricted my ability to do my job. Congress has oversight authority over such facilities. All told, dozens of people have been arrested, a handful have been taken to hospitals, and three separate law enforcement agencies have failed to calm the situation. The New Jersey is suing the prison's management demanding access to the facility.

For NPR News, I'm Bruce Conviser and Greenbrook, New Jersey. You're listening to NPR News in Washington. Federal agriculture officials and the livestock industry in South Texas are on high alert for additional cases of a parasite that's called the New World Screwworm.

And peers will stone reports it's the first detection of that parasite in the state since

the 1960s. The New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly that lays its eggs in the wounds of livestock and other animals and feeds on their flesh. It was a devastating pest for the cattle industry in the 1900s before a massive eradication program largely vanquished the fly from the US.

Jason Sawyer, chief science officer for East Foundation, a nonprofit and ranching operation says his industry has been preparing for this. It is a threat that can be mitigated and ultimately eradicated. You know, we've done it before we can do it again. The eradication strategy largely relies on releasing millions of sterile male flies that

make with wild females, which causes the population to decline over time. Will Stone and P.R. News. At the weekend box office, after three weeks of indie horror dominance, the slasher spoof sequel Scary Movie took the top spot with an estimated $55 million in ticket sales. The way in Brother's comedy, the sixth Scary Movie, notched a franchise best $105 million

global launch.

In second place, masters of the universe with $29 million in third place A24's horror

film "Backrooms" with $25 million, it's the studio's highest grossing release ever. On June 11, the globe's biggest sporting event comes to North America, the FIFA World Cup. The Super Bowl, and you might say, averages something over 100 million, live viewers, but

the World Cup final, I think like five times that much.

The favorites, the underdogs, and the Americanization of the world's game. This is now to the Sunday Story from the Up First Podcast on the NPR app.
