Tensions are again escalating in the Middle East, as Israel says its struck military

targets in western and central Iran early Monday morning, local time.

On Sunday morning, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel. The first such attack since the Middle East ceasefire was declared two months ago. NPR's Greg Myri reports this marks a major breach in what was already a shaky truce. The Iranian missiles targeted northern Israel, where warning sirens rang out Sunday night. The Israeli military said shortly afterward, it had shot down all the incoming missiles.

Falling debris ignited brush fires, but no damage or injuries were reported.

Iran's revolutionary guard corps said it targeted an Israeli air base outside the city of

hypha. A Iran warned earlier, it might act due to ongoing Israeli attacks against his ballad. The Lebanese militant group closely allied with Iran. Israel's military spokesman said Iran had made a "grave mistake," the latest fighting further complicates the already difficult effort to work out an end to the war in Iran.

Voters in California cast their primary balance this past Tuesday, but the results

are still not in. NPR's Tamar Kites says a lot of Democrats waited until the last minute to turn in their ballots and Republicans voted early so the ballots counted first skewed far more Republican than those that are still being counted now. California has this top two primary system, so candidates regardless of party run in the

same primary. In the governor's race, former Democratic congressman and HHS secretary Havier Basara has secured a spot on the November ballot.

We learned that, but the second spot is still up in the air, former Fox News host

Steve Hilton is currently in second place, with ballots still being counted, and Tom Steyer, the billionaire progressive populist, is in a close third. We're also waiting on results in the L.A. Mayors race, and quite a few congressional contests. NPR's senior political correspondent Tamar Keith.

Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, met with British Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Meritz in London, and Pierce Polina lit Vinova reports they discussed the situation on the battlefield and Europe's role in peace talks. According to Zelensky, Russia has been losing more than 30,000 soldiers, including killed

and wounded for five months in a row. Russia is not being in on the battlefield, hereout on social media, but Kiev still needs a rise help to protect its guys from Russian ballistic measles, strengthening Ukrainian air defense was one of the main topics during the talks, and other one was diplomacy. Zelensky believes Europe must be at the negotiating table, but its position, quote, "soud

bestron." This is NPR. China's president Xi Jinping has arrived in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital. He was welcomed with North Korean soldiers standing at attention and music playing from airport speakers as seen in official video from China state media.

A red banner had these words in Korean and Chinese, long lived the unbreakable friendship between North Korea and China. North Korea's official newspaper, Nodon Chinman, published comments made by Xi, ahead of his visit, saying China and the DPRK should support each other in pursuing socialist paths suited to their own national conditions.

The 79th annual Tony Awards, Broadway's highest honor, were handed out at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night, and a ceremony hosted by Popstar Pink, reporter Jeff London says the voters spread the wealth around. One clear winner of the night, it was the revival of Arthur Miller's death of a salesman. The atmospheric production set in a garage picked up six Tony's, including best revival

of a play. This is where the awards were more evenly spread. Ragtime picked up four awards, including best musical revival, while cats, the Jellicle Ball picked up three. Schmiggadoon won four awards, including best musical.

But the lost boys picked up four awards, too. Best play went to liberation. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York, and this is NPR in New York City. On June 11th, the globe's biggest sporting event comes to North America, the FIFA World Cup.

The Super Bowl, and you might say, averages, something over a hundred million, live viewers,

but the World Cup final, I think like five times that much.

The favorites, the underdogs, and the Americanization of the world's game. Listen now to the Sunday Story from the Up First Podcast on the NPR app.
