NPR's William Jones reports four countries will play in the World Cup for the first

time. The Caribbean island nation Curaçao has a population of $158,000. That's essentially just two stadiums at capacity. There'll be the smallest country to ever compete at a World Cup, and they're diving straight in at the deep end, going up against four-time World Cup winners Germany first.

Another World Cup debutant, Cabo Verde, face an equally challenging opening game. Game to the blue sharks, the volcanic island country off the coast of West Africa, will play Spain.
