Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Curve of a Coleman, President Trump wro...
morning Iran has taken too long to negotiate a deal, and quote, "Now they will have to pay the price."
“This comes after the U.S. attacked sites in Iran this week, after the President said”
Iran down to U.S. military helicopter, Iran has responded to the strikes with strikes of its own against U.S. bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait, and B.R. Franco-Ordonias reports. President called U.S. strikes on Iran and necessity after U.S. helicopter went down near the state of her moves.
Iranian officials say they did not target the U.S. helicopter, but Trump called it an attack. Mona Eccubian, a former State Department official who now works at the Center for Strategic
and International Studies, says Trump was basically in a no-win situation.
If the U.S. doesn't respond, that will be portrayed as weakness. If, on the other hand, the U.S. response, as it should, that opens the way for further escalation. It also makes it harder to reach a deal that the President had said earlier this week was potentially two or three days away, Franco-Ordonias and P.R. News.
“The House has approved legislation intended to speed up the time it takes, newly unionized”
workers, to reach a first contract with their employers, and P.R.'s Andrea Xu reports. After a union election, it takes an average of 465 days for workers and employers to reach a first contract, that's according to Bloomberg Law. The faster labor contracts act, cuts that time dramatically. It requires employers to begin contract talks within 10 days of a union election.
If there's no deal 90 days later, federal mediators get involved.
And if there's still no deal 30 days after that, an arbitration panel steps into settle the matter. There's Andrea Xu reporting. A new report by the Government Accountability Office found serious risks for people held at Camp East Montana.
It's the largest immigrant detention camp in the U.S. The Watchdog agencies, as millions of dollars, were wasted on contractors who failed to meet health and safety standards at the Fort Bliss tent facility. From Member's Station, KTEP, Angela Kuchirico reports. The GAO found gaps in medical services at the Texas detention camp, including no treatment
plan for people with chronic conditions like diabetes or HIV. There was also no tuberculosis testing for newer rivals, and there were cases at the camp. Among the safety issues, a missing loaded firearm, inadequate security cameras, and a failure
by ICE to inspect the $1.3 billion facility before it opened last year.
Many men have died in custody. The report says evidence in one case ruled a homicide by the Opasso Medical Examiner was missing or destroyed. For NPR News, I'm Angela Kuchirico, an Opasso. You're listening to NPR.
The Government says consumer inflation rose 4.2% in May over what it was a year ago. The majority of that was due to energy costs. Triple A says the average price of regular gas is about $1.17 higher than it was before the war against Iran started. A new report shows younger students in the U.S. are making gains in reading and math.
NPR Sequoia Corrilla reports on the findings from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Every few years, thousands of nine and 13-year-old students around the country sit down to take a pencil and paper exam. Many of the questions have been the same since the tests started in the 1970s.
“The federal trend report looks at achievement in two key subject areas, and this”
reliefs had some good news. Seeing some really encouraging signs for our nine-year-olds, they are making progress of both in reading and in mathematics. The 13-year-olds aren't so lucky, still stagnating where they were in last assessment. So what happened with those younger students?
One thing may be that there were only four years old during the COVID-19 pandemic, so unlike their older counterparts, their schooling wasn't really disrupted. Sequoia Corrilla and Pernus. In men's pro hockey, the Stanley Cup final is now tied at two games of peace. The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights last night, five to three, then moved
to Raleigh, North Carolina, tomorrow night for Game 5. In the NBA finals, game 4 is tonight, the New York Knicks will again welcome the San Antonio Spurs in Madison Square Garden. The New York Knicks lead that series to games to one. On Corrilla Coleman, NPR News in Washington.
