A wartime spike in gasoline prices has pushed inflation to its highest level in more than three years. NPR is Scott Horstley reports on the latest cost of living data from the labor department out today.

Consumer prices in May were up 4.2 percent from a year ago.

That's the biggest annual increase since April of 2023.

Prices rose by half a percent between April and May with energy cost accounting from more than 60 percent of that monthly increase. Stripping out volatile food and energy cost, so-called core inflation, was 2.9 percent for the 12 months ending in May, a slightly larger annual increase than the previous month. Gasoline prices have moderated in recent days, but are still about a $1.17 gallon higher than they were before. The U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran. Triple A says the average price of regular gas is about $4.15 since the gallon.

His victory earned him the right to take on Republican senators using Collins, this November, and a closely watched contest that could determine control of the U.S. Senate during the final two years of President Trump's time in office.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new sunscreen ingredient for the first time in decades in the United States.

Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug not as a cosmetic, and Pearson Elepkin reports that can make new approvals tricky. Bemotrize in all has long been an active ingredient in sunscreen sold in Europe and Asia, and for the last 20 years, a company called DSM Nutritional Products LLC has been trying to get it approved in the U.S. The FDA announced this week that it added Bemotrize in all to the list of permitted sunscreen ingredients. The new ingredient protects against UVA and UVB rays, the agency says, and it's safe to use for adults in children's six months and older.

Products containing this ingredient aren't on store shelves yet, but should be in the next few months. Sidney Lupkin and PR News. This is NPR. Hey, Lulu here, whether we are romping through science, music, politics, technology, or feelings, we seek to leave you seeing the world unmu.
