"Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Dan Roman.

The U.S. in Iran traded military strikes early Wednesday, one day after Iran took down

a U.S. Army helicopter near the state of Hormuz, Iran launched attacks into neighboring

Bahrain and Kuwait, and Iran said it also targeted an air base in Jordan. The U.S. Central Command said it launched self-defense strikes which hit Iranian air defense facilities radar sight and ground station, NPR White House correspondent Deepa Shiveram.

"All of this is coming at a critical time in this war which has gone on for a lot longer

than Trump originally intended, both sides have been negotiating to end the conflict and agree to some kind of a peace deal, but that hasn't happened yet, and now there's a chance things could re-escalate here." 12 people have been killed in a mass shooting in Joe Hanasburg Police said Wednesday. Kate Bartlett reports mass shootings often related to organized crime were becoming more

common in South Africa. Police say they have launched a man-hunt for an unknown number of suspects. They've said on Tuesday night a group of men arrived at Cleveland and former settlement and impoverished area in Johannesburg. They opened fire indiscriminately on residence, killing nine men and three women before

fleeing in a white Toyota van, no motive is yet known.

South Africa is one of the world's highest murder rates averaging about 60 a day.

Last year, nine people were killed in a shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg. Sometimes the shooting is linked to gang wars over turf and they have also been blamed on illegal gold miners, known as Summersummers, Kate Bartlett in Pianneus, Johannesburg. The U.S. is planning a quarantine facility in Kenya this for Americans who have been exposed to Ebola.

It sparked protest within the country. The facilities intended for a 21-day voluntary quarantine. If someone remains asymptomatic, they can travel freely. But if not, they may be transported elsewhere for treatment. The State Department says their top priority is "protecting the health of the American

people and preventing the Ebola outbreak from reaching our shores." But Nahid Badelia, who directs Boston University's center on emerging infectious diseases, has strong reservations. This is a bad idea. They should just transport people back.

It's cheaper, it's safer, it's better for Americans overall.

And that's because she argues, these individuals could have access to higher-quality medical care in the U.S. where they'd be more likely to survive any resulting complications. For NPR News, I'm Ari Daniel. The Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine will face political newcomer Graham Plattener in the November General Election.

Collins was on a post in the Republican primary. Plattener easily won the Democratic primary despite recent questions about his personal life.

The Maine Senate seat is considered critical for Democrats if they're to win the Senate in

November. It's NPR. Republican incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Democratic Challenger Dr. Annie Andrews will face off in November for the U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina. Both Graham and Andrews easily won their primary races Tuesday.

In South Carolina's governor's race, the current Lieutenant Governor, Pamela Evet will face these dates to Attorney General Alan Wilson in a run-off in June. In Australia, the shooting suspect in the Bondi Beach terror attack has been charged with 19 new offenses. Ms. Kristina Kukala reports, 15 people were killed when two gunmen opened fire on a Jewish

community December of last year. Navidad from now faces nearly 80 charges over the attack at an event celebrating Hanukkah at Sydney's Bondi Beach. The new charges include 10 counts of shooting with intent to murder and six of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest.

The 24-year-old was previously charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He's yet to enter a plea to the charges on the day of the attack Navidad Graham was wounded in a shootout with police while his father's sergeant Graham was killed. For NPR News, I'm Kristina Kukala in Melbourne.

The NBA Finals' resume Wednesday night in New York's Madison Square Garden with game four of the nicks of a two-game to one lead over San Antonio. The best of seven NHL Stanley Cup Final between Carolina and Los Angeles was Vegas, excuse me. It's now tied Carolina 15 to three, it's NPR.
