There are now more than 4,000 national guard troops deployed to Washington, DC. That's after federal official announced a summer surge in law enforcement in the city. A head of America's 250th birthday celebrations, NPR's Cat Lonesdorf has more. Around 1200 troops from dozens of states have been added to President Trump's Washington DC National Guard deployment in recent weeks, and hundreds more are expected by July 4th.
Trump deployed the guard in August of last year as part of an effort to fight crime and beautify the city. Crime was already trending down before Trump got into office, and the National Guard has no arresting power. Groups, many of whom are armed, are mainly performing patrols around the city, making their
presence known in residential areas, parks, and metro stops. According to an estimate by the nonpartisan congressional budget office, the current deployment in DC costs around $2.4 million a day.
