"Live from MPR News," I'm Giles Snyder.

Vice President J.D. Vance had been expected to leave a Friday to lead talks with Iran,

but that trip has now been delayed, the White House citing difficult logistics for a new

round of negotiations. Earlier in the day, Vance defended the preliminary agreement that President Trump signed to negotiate into the war as impures Daniel Kurtzlaven reports. Vance insisted that Iran will not receive financial rewards under the deal unless it complies with an agreement, but he was asked how that squares with allowing Iran to sell oil

immediately. "We felt that it was reasonable that if we were going to allow everybody else to sell their energy during this period of negotiation, we would allow everyone to sell their energy. That's all we're doing. We can slap everything right back on if the Iranians don't make the deal that we expect."

While the White House initially said the Vice President would travel on Friday to Switzerland for a ceremonial signing, Trump signed an inverse side France last night after the G7 summit. Vance said today he still plans to go to Switzerland, but doesn't know when. Daniel Kurtzlaven and Pierre knew the White House.

"Now to Chicago, where former President Barack Obama formally opened his presidential

center with a call to defend democracy." "The democracy can be frustrating. It can be slow. It can be inefficient." "And yet more than anything, I hope this center will serve as an affirmation of just

how special, how precious, how democracy truly is. And remind us what we can achieve when we embrace our shared responsibilities as citizens." Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke with three other former presidents and attendance, as well as a list, celebrities, athletes, and other well-known figures. Heavy rain from the remnants of tropical stormarthers still pose a threat on the Gulf Coast.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency in some areas. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has a member of a county road crew was killed while helping with storm cleanup operations. Recovery efforts underway in the Midwest after major storm struck Wednesday night in Indiana

tornadoes touched down as George Hale of member station WFI U reports.

Sandy Sheffield has lived in the tiny town of Stein'sville, southwest of Indianapolis

for 41 years, but says she's never seen anything like what happened late Wednesday night.

"We were watching TV and the power went out and then we heard start here in crashes." Outside, an EF2 tornado was tearing through the rural community. Recovery efforts were still underway a day later in the disaster area where down trees cut power lines in blocked roadways, the red cross is operating an emergency shelter with food and beds for displaced people.

The tornado was among more than a dozen reported in the unusually powerful storm for this time of year. For NPR News, I'm George Hale in Bloomington, Indiana. "You're listening to NPR News." U.S. Supreme Court is siding with a Texas man who argues that it is not a crime for a marijuana

users to have guns. The court decided unanimously that a federal law barring guns from anyone who regularly

uses illegal drugs violates a second amendment.

The decision Thursday is the latest in a line of gun cases from a court that has expanded gun rights. American Buddhist scholar and author Robert Thurman has died. He was 84 years old. NPR station drills reports he helped the English-speaking world understand Tibetan Buddhism.

Robert Thurman translated Buddhist texts into English and held the first in Dowd chair in Buddhist studies in the West at Columbia University, where he taught for many years. In 1965, the Dalai Lama ordained Thurman a Buddhist monk. He went on to found Tibet House, a cultural center in New York City. Both Thai magazine and New York magazine named him among the most religiously influential

Americans for his work promoting greater understanding of Buddhism in the West. The Dalai Lama wrote in a letter of condolence to Thurman's family, quote, "He understood profoundly that the survival of Tibetan Buddhist culture is inseparably linked to the future of Tibet itself."
