Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton, in Venezuela, crews from...
the world are racing against the clock to find survivors of last week's back-to-back
earthquakes.
“International rescue committee emergency response director Rafael Velasquez says teams”
are starting to think about next steps. Now we have to reconstruct people's livelihoods, we have to help people help themselves making sure that they have access our people and the ground or teams on the ground are telling us that they're considering a vector response, the worry about water and sanitation like a lot of access to clean water.
More than 2,600 people are confirmed dead and up to 40,000 are still missing. Many fear mass graves are coming, Venezuela is acting president, Delci Rodriguez is defending her government's response. Groups are on the country that work to prevent teen pregnancy, say they're alarmed after their grants were suddenly canceled by the Trump administration, congressional Democrats
are demanding the administration restore $70 million in teen pregnancy prevention grants.
Groups at the end of June, the federal department of Health and Human Services sent notices of termination for all but a few teen pregnancy prevention programs. This really was a shock. Ginger Malini is CEO of Healthy Futures of Texas, one of the grantees based in Dallas. She says 13 of her employees may lose their jobs.
It's hardened and frustrated because Texas and our nation really have made monumental strides in reducing teen pregnancy over the last 15 years. The Department of Health and Human Services did not respond to NPR's request for comment about why the grants were canceled. Selenism and stuff in NPR news.
In the nation's capital, the Great American State Fair shut down early in the day because it was simply too hot, it reopened this evening, and tomorrow President Trump will ring in the 250th anniversary on the U.S. on the National Mall as NPR's prank link that reports the event is getting mixed reviews. Many of the fairer Trump supporters in like the event, joined Leaverman, flew in from California
and joined the exhibits from different states. It's a privilege to live in this country and then to be able to celebrate it in such a great way. I just, I wanted to be in the middle of it. And there's seen the fairer's extension of Trump, there's a 10 promoting Trump investment
accounts and a faith and family pavilion filled with conservative Christian groups, Robert Chase teaches history at Stony Brook University.
“I think Donald Trump has tried to associate himself with this event, and to associate”
dislike with him with dissent and unpaid-creatic acts. That's kind of problematic. Chase says that's one reason why attendance at the fair has been so thin, frankly like it in PR news, Washington President Trump is in South Dakota for speech and a fireworks at Mount Rushmore tonight.
You know, as stock markets were closed today, ahead of the fourth of July holiday shares are mixed in Europe after a rally in Asia following the Dow's latest record. This is NPR. It's official songwriter Taylor Swift and football star Travis Kelsey tied to not today. Signs outside Madison Square Garden are lit up with a lavender, just TNT married message.
All lavish gold ring and crusty with diamond sapphires, emeralds, and rubies has been presented to the US ambassador to Belgium to give to President Trump the ring celebrates America's 250th birthday. It features intricate designs, including a diamond-winged eagle that gives follows the removal of U.S. tariffs on Belgian diamond imports.
The ring's value is estimated between 25,000 and 35,000 dollars Trump has not yet received the ring. It was a nail-biter of a game, Argentina played Cape Verde in the World Cup knockout round in one three to two, but his NPR's Jasmine Garce reports it was a tough battle. Argentina is the defending world champion and Cape Verde was being hailed as a Cinderella story,
the smallest nation to get to the knockout stage. Cape Verde's defense was steely, Argentina struggled, and the game went into over time. Around 120 minutes played in over 90 degree heat. By the end, players on both teams were experiencing cramps. Argentina's third goal came near the end of the game.
They played Egypt on Tuesday, Jasmine Garce and Pyrenees Miami. Australian officials are asking fans to respect the privacy of Neil, a one-ton elephant seal. Neil has a social media following twice the size of Tasmania's population and his antics include picking fights with cars and blocking roads, but officials are urging fans to give
Neil space, fearing his popularity could lead to dangerous encounters. They've urged locals not to post his current location. They're listening to NPR news from Washington.
