Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman, 4th of July celebrations and some parts ...
are being cancelled because of record-breaking temperatures.
“As MPR's Cat Lonstore reports the National Weather Service's issued extreme heat warnings”
in 23 states. The high temperatures are largely due to a heat dome, moving over the northeastern U.S. stretching from southern Maine to the mid-Atlantic and as far west as Missouri. Multiple governors issued warnings for residents to be mindful of the heat while celebrating, telling people to stay hydrated, take air-conditioned brakes.
Philadelphia cancelled its 4th of July parade due to heat concerns the event was supposed to be one of the largest in the country, several other cities also cancelled their celebrations, including some in the DC area, but official events in Washington, including a massive fireworks display on the 4th, are still proceeding as planned. A new national poll from the Libertarian Kato Institute shows that nearly half of Americans don't know what the country's 250th anniversary commemorates.
“As MPR's Chloe Velban reports, the biggest takeaway from the survey of more than 2000”
American adults in late June, is a disconnect between Americans patriotic pride and their lack of civic knowledge. Nearly 90% of respondents say they are grateful to be American, and 70% believe the nation's founding principles remain relevant, but close to half failed to identify the adoption of the Declaration of Independence as the source of the 250th anniversary celebrations.
Stanford historian Jack Rakehoff is an authority on the drafting of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He says the lack of civic knowledge is a disaster. "Any democratic assessment of government to succeed requires having an informed electorate." Rakehoff blames the fragmented media landscape, and schools prioritising STEM subjects over
specifics and history, Chloe Velban and Piano's. "Fire crews in Colorado are continuing to work ablaze that it's now consumed more than 74,000 acres. Officials say the Aspen Acres Fire has destroyed more than 160 structures and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents.
Custer County Sheriff Lloyd Smith says they're getting more equipment to help." "90 extra fire engines come in from as far away as California, Utah and Grand Junction. In fact, they've actually pulled fire trucks off of those fires to come help us." The fire is one of about 40 uncontained large fires that are burning mostly in the western U.S. this weekend.
Two people are dead and the third was injured during a fight of the shopping mall and
Dearborn Michigan Friday. The fight led to a shooting that sent mall patron scrabbling, including one person. It was hit by a vehicle outside the mall. Police chief ISIS Shaheen says the two groups know each other and the fight began when they came in contact with each other, so far police have no one in custody.
You're listening to NPR news. Baltimore's harbor once saw the rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air that inspired the star-spangled banner. Now many of the American flags flying over Fort McCannery, which is a federal monument and Maryland state buildings, come from an unexpected place.
Some boy come out, takes us inside the state's women's prison. Pass the guard tower and tall fences topped with barbed wire is shot 104 at the Maryland Correctional Institution for women. Here, Shavella Cranshaw is among 40 other women turning roles of nylon into finished flags, tracing patterns, layering colors, and hemming the edges on industrial machines.
Some of our flags are actually shown over a foot McCannery and what not, so it's really an honor and a privilege to be able to make the flags, yes, for the U.S. of aid. Cranshaw hopes to use these skills when she's released. State officials say the program provides job training, critics, to crowd the use of prison labor to produce a symbol of liberty.
