More Democratic Party leaders are distancing themselves from the nominee in Maine, who

they'd hope would help them unseat Republican incumbent Susan Collins in the midterm elections

and possibly win back control of the U.S. Senate. Grant Platner is under pressure to drop out after a sexual assault allegation recently surfaced. Multiple controversies have plagued the progressive, oysterman's campaign in Maine. NPR Sam Greenglass has a latest.

In his statement, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand that Democratic Senatorial campaign committee chair called the allegations incredibly disturbing and say the DSCC will not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot. her saying no. NPR has not independently verified the allegation. Platner denies it categorically. It Platner exits the race by July 13th, Maine's Democratic Party could select a replacement

the Senate. Sam Greenglass and PR News, Washington. President Trump and other NATO leaders are in the Turkish capital for a high stakes annual summit. The last time Turkey hosted a NATO summit was 2004.

NPR said, "I'll shall cheat," reports that this year, Turkey could play a vital role for the military alliance.

Turkey has NATO's second largest military.

Controls access to the Black Sea through the Turkish streets and has acted as a mediator in major conflicts across the Middle East. So this summit is President Erdogan's chance to present Turkey as an indispensable NATO ally, especially after years of being at odds with many European countries, because if it's human rights record, President Trump praised Erdogan many times, he's also been frustrated

with NATO, arguing the alliance relies too heavily on the U.S.

Now NATO needs Turkey, not only to help with the wars in Ukraine and Iran, but also

to help manage its relationship with Trump. Hadil al-Shalci, NPR News, Ankara. Europe is in the grip of a third heat wave, more from NPR Zellon or Beardsley. Weathercasters say the latest heat wave is driven by a new heat dome, the same weather pattern responsible for the previous two heat waves.
