Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm with Sir Johnston.
A high stakes confirmation hearing is underway on Capitol Hill at the Sauer for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering whether to give President Trump's former”
personal attorney the job permanently. In his opening statement, Blanche told the panel that his time at the DOJ has prepared him to lead the department. 17 months ago, I sat at this table as the nominee to be the Deputy Attorney General. And I told you that serving in the Department of Justice was my American dream.
Since then, I have helped lead it first as Deputy and now is acting Attorney General.
And I'm here today to earn your trust once more. Democrats are expected to press Blanche over the Justice Department's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and investigations of Trump's political opponents, Blanche's confirmation could hint on a small number of Republicans who have not yet committed to supporting him.
Stocks on Wall Street opened higher this morning as the Labor Department reported a cooling in wholesale inflation last month.
“NPR Scott Horsley reports the Dow Jones industrial average rose about 220 points in early”
trading. As at the wholesale level in June, we're up five and a half percent from a year ago, that's a smaller annual increase than the previous month. wholesale prices actually dip between May and June by three tens of percent. Retail prices show to similar decline last month, thanks in part, to falling gasoline prices.
Renewed tensions in the straight of Formus, however, are once again pushing gas prices higher tripalases the average price of regular gas rose three cents a gallon overnight, while diesel prices jump by nickel a gallon. Iran is threatening to halt all energy exports from the Middle East after President Trump announced a new blockade of Iranian ports.
Asian stocks were mixed overnight, up in Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong, but down in Shanghai. Scott Horsley, in Pyrenees, Washington. Security officials in Germany are warning of attacks by Iranian networks in Europe after a list
“of targets was published in a pro regime newspaper.”
As me Nicholson reports, Tehran is accusing European states of failing to condemn U.S. Israeli attacks. Among the 13 politicians listed by the Iranian daily Hammashari were President Trump, German Chancellor Friedrich Mats, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the leaders of France, Italy, and Great Britain.
The newspaper asserts that they will pay for the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Harmony, security policy experts within the German Bundestag say the retaliation list would not have been published without approval from the Iranian regime, warning that the risk of Iran's intelligence agencies using proxies in Germany to carry out attacks is extremely real for MPI news I'm as musicals in Berlin.
On Wall Street, the Dow was of a 200-5 points, you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
New York has become the first day to halt the development of large data centers used
to power artificial intelligence. Governor Kathy Hokel announced a moratorium on Tuesday that could last up to a year while the state develops new environmental and energy standards. Hokel is also planning to seek an end to sales tax exemptions for large data centers, lawmakers and regulators and dozens of states are weighing measures to limit the effect
on electricity grids, utility bills, and local communities. England and Argentina are set to face off in a World Cup semi-final today, and P.R.'s Becky Sullivan reports the matchup will be the newest chapter in the long-time rivalry between the two teams on and off the field. The England Argentina rivalry has had plenty of controversial moments over the decades,
like the infamous "Hand of God" goal scored by Diego Maradana in 1986. And, of course, in 1982, there was a war between the two over the Falcland Islands, whose sovereignty is disputed to this day. This is the sixth time these two nations have met at the World Cup. This time Argentina is the defending champion, led by the 39-year-old Megastar Liannell
Messi, who has scored eight goals at this World Cup so far.
Meanwhile, England is playing for its first appearance in the World Cup final since 1966.
Their captain, Harry Kane, and young attacker, Jude Bellingham, have six goals a piece. The winner will move on to face Spain in the final on Sunday in New Jersey, Becky Sullivan and P.R. News at Lianna. Stokes continue to trade higher on Wall Street at the South, the Dow was up 163 points, the NASDAQ up 165.
This is NPR News. This week on NewsMakers, I'm a surprise you even had me on. Comedian Bill Maradana, on his Mark Twain Award and the lost art of political debate, just engage with the argument, tell me if I'm wrong about something and then we're going to be cool, but that's not what either extreme does in this country anymore.
