"Li from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan.

Fixed smoke continues to blanket large parts of the Midwest in eastern U.S. leading to

unhealthy and potentially dangerous air quality in several states.

It's the result of extreme heat and dry conditions in parts of Canada and northern Minnesota where officials say an estimated 900 wildfires are burning. NPR's Avaburger explains." These regions will have fires, caused by things like lightning strikes, thunder storms. But in the province of Ontario where most of the smoke we're seeing is actually coming

from, the number of fires are still increasing. And they're not expected to get under control until maybe the beginning of August. Ontario now is the most active fires by province. They're nearly 200 burning." President Trump is warning Canadian leaders.

He may seek higher tariffs against that country because of the damage caused by the smoke from the fires. He called the "fix smoke," "willful negligence" and says it's costing the U.S. billions. The president says he wants to cease to send her Lindsey Graham's sister to run in the special election to replace him.

NPR's Tamera Key through reports it was expected to be a competitive primary.

U.S. Senate seats don't come up often. Lindsey Graham had held his seat for more than 23 years and had just won a Republican primary to serve six more when he died suddenly. Trump who was close with Graham suggested that the Senator's sister, Darlene Graham, be named to replace him temporarily.

She was sworn in earlier this week. Now in a post on Truth Social Trump says he has asked her to run in the special Republican primary to replace her brother for the good of our country. He goes on to say having her serve a full term will honor his legacy and that if she decides to do it, she would have his complete and total endorsement.

Hammer Keith NPR news in Aurora, Colorado, a woman was shot Thursday night after a protest outside of an ice detention center. Colorado Public Radio's Kara Demari reports this was unlike the recent deadly shootings involving ice officers, but it comes at a time of heightened tension. Police say the suspect Brandon Booth and other employees of the facility run by the private

prison contractor Geo Group had been blocked from entering. They say after a verbal confrontation with protesters, Booth fired a shot at two women as they walked away, hitting one in her lower body. Booth then drove off but was detained down the road by police.

He was booked on suspicion of charges including attempted second remurder and unlawful

caring of a concealed weapon. Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper said in a statement that ice in their contractors are "completely out of control." A Geo Group spokesperson said that Booth has been placed on unpaid administrative leave and the company is cooperating with law enforcement.

For NPR news, I'm Kara Demari in Denver. It's NPR. The U.S. is launching another round of air strikes against Iran, making this the 7th consecutive night of bombing since the ceasefire broke down. The U.S. has hit bridges and energy sites as part of a campaign to pressure Tehran

to give up its control of the straight of her moods, a key waterway that takes care

of 20 percent of the world's energy.

Federal regulators say they will once again allow Boeing to certify its planes or air worthy. NPR's Joel Rose reports the announcement Friday comes after years of safety experts at the aerospace giant. The Federal Aviation Administration says Boeing can take responsibility for certifying all

of its 737 MAX and 787 planes starting next week. It's a big milestone for the plane maker. The FAA revoked Boeing's ability to self-certify its 737 MAX planes in 2019 after a pair of deadly crashes. Regulators did the same for the 787 Dreamliner in 2022 citing production quality issues.

The FAA now says it has confidence in Boeing to ensure that all of its planes are airworthy after months of data and safety reviews. The agency is also easing the monthly production caps it imposed on the 737 MAX, allowing Boeing to make up to 47 per month. Joel Rose and PR News, Washington.

Actress Brenda Fricker, the first Irish woman to ever win an Oscar for her role as Bridget

Fagan Brown in the 1989 Biographical movie, my left foot has died in Dublin. She also had a supporting role in the movie Home Alone 2 is the Pigeon Lady in Central Park. The last time Antonio May's senior heard from his son, it was in a note, the 16-year-old left and the family's garage.

Antonio Jr. left home to join a protest in Seattle, a week later he was shot and killed there. Listen to We Keep Us Safe on the Embedded Podcast from NPR.
