In 2024, more than half a million children living with HIV received a medication from
a U.S. program call pet far. Last year, the Trump administration made major cuts to the program to prevent HIV abroad in Paris, Durypa Scarron reports on new data, showing that 77,000 fewer kids were served last year. The state department credits pup far with saving 26 million lives since it was established
under George W. Bush. One of the programs provides anti-retro viral medications to children born with HIV. But nearly released data show that 10% fewer children were served by the program after aid cuts over the last fiscal year. In South Africa, the program served half the number of kids as the year before.
Researchers from the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health, which analyzed the data, found that the loss was substantially greater than what is normally seen from year to year as fewer babies are born with HIV. They also noted that the impact was felt disproportionately among children compared to adults, Durypa Scarron and Pernu's Washington.
