Main Democrats voted 566 to five today to approve Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation
“logger and former legislative leader to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins in”
the Fall General election. Kevin Miller, with main public radio reports on one of the nation's closest watch, congressional races. Jackson received all but five of the 571 votes cast by Democratic delegates during a special convention.
He replaces Graham Platner, an oysterman and Marine Corps veteran who withdrew earlier this month. Like Platner, Jackson pledged to work toward universal health care, to protect abortion rights, and to stand up to the Trump administration. "And are you ready to defeat Susan Collins?"
"Well, unless you night this party, let's build the largest working class movement main has ever seen, and let's win this fight." Jackson will now face Collins, a 30-year Senate veteran who is the only Republican member of Congress from New England. For NPR News, I'm Kevin Miller.
“In Germany, one person is dead and at least 16 people are injured after a vehicle drove”
into a crowd at the Capitol's annual Pride event. As that's main Nicholson reports, police are actively searching for the driver. Bill and police say a white vehicle drove into a crowd at the city's annual Pride Parade shortly after 10pm on Saturday evening. Police say witnesses saw the driver get out and run away after coming to a halt.
Police are currently clearing the parade as they search for the suspect. But in annual Pride, known as Christopher Streetstay, is one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ events. For MPI News, I'm Asmine Nicholson, in Berlin. Police now say the suspect is known as a member of that city's Islamic community.
Dangerously hot weather is affecting millions of people across the central U.S. this weekend, as NPR's Ava Pukech reports, temperatures in many areas are expected to push above 100 degrees. This heat dome stretches from Dallas to North Dakota, and is expected to linger into the coming days.
“A heat dome occurs when strong atmospheric pressure acts like a lid, trapping hot air and”
humidity over a region for days or weeks at a time. It's in part due to climate change. That's led to more heat waves and hotter nights. When the atmosphere retains more heat at night, the daytime temperature rises from a hotter baseline.
The National Weather Service says high temperatures combined with high humidity can make conditions feel worse. It can also be dangerous. Children, the elderly and people of medical conditions are most at risk of heat stroke. Ava Pukech and Pernis.
Typhoon Nool is pounding Southern China, Hong Kong, and parts of Taiwan at this hour. The storm has heavy rain and strong winds and is prompted the evacuation of more than 340,000 people in China, more than 150 flights have been canceled at Hong Kong's airport and some trains in China were stopped as well. The number of confirmed cases of Ebola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, is surpassed 2900, and the death toll is more than 1300. That's according to newly released government data. Those figures make this the fastest growing Ebola outbreak on record. Some 100 healthcare workers walked off the job this weekend at the Treatment Center
in the Tory province, they say unpaid bonuses are undermining morale and disrupting patient care. A report from the UN says fewer people faced hunger worldwide last year, it marks three straight years of declines, and Pera's Fatmatonis reports.
An estimated 645 million people experienced hunger in 2025, 14 million less than the previous
year. To the UN report, while Asia and Latin America saw steady improvements, Africa continues to have the highest number of hungry people, as droughts affected food production and conflict in the Middle East has driven up fuel and fertilizer prices, which in turn led to an increase in food costs.
And more than a quarter of the world's population experienced food insecurity, meaning they had to compromise on the quality and quantity of the food they ate. The UN says women are disproportionately affected, Fatmatonis and Pera News. PGA2, a rookie Jackson Quivan shot a 661 and the third round of the PGA tournament underway in Minnesota this weekend, that put him a 20 under par and gives him a three stroke lead heading
into Sunday's final round. He said a tournament record with a 28 in the back nine with the help of two Eagles, Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kools are in second.
