U.S. Bank talks are underway in Venezuela today.
Catherine Osborne reports the discussions are aimed at moving the country toward a democratic transition. The Trump administration holds immense influence in Venezuela since the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro in January, developing a close partnership with his replacement Delsea Rodriguez.
Washington says it wants economic recovery for Venezuela first and then democratization. Maduro clung to power after international observers said he lost the last election,
“so a key demand by the opposition is a fair vote.”
The many Venezuelans hold only cautious expectations for these talks, because they're occurring without the most popular opposition leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Codina Machado. Trump said last week, Venezuela was not yet ready for an election. For NPR News, I'm Catherine Osborne in Rio de Janeiro.
Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington hold primary elections on Tuesday.
In Michigan, early voting is already underway in the primary for a critical U.S. Senate

People are fed up. It's not working.
This is not working for the majority of people.

Public health nurses in Michigan are working to contain a major cycle of spora outbreak. Kate Wells of KFF health news says more than 10,000 cases have been reported across the
state. When a culprits of public health, foodborne illnesses are some of the most complicated to investigate, especially cyclists' prices, because symptoms may not appear for up to two weeks after eating contaminated food. Linda Kim is a public health nurse in Washington County.
Kim says the people she's talking to now have been much more forthcoming compared to the people she contacted during a measles outbreak in the spring. People regarded and didn't want to talk to us versus this is like food poisoning and people want to share for some reason where they got it exactly. Federal funding cuts have affected the state's public health system reducing staff and
capacity at the labs that handle disease samples. In Ann Arbor, Michigan, I'm Kate Wells. This is NPR News in Washington. The blistering heat dome has settled in over large swaths of the southwest and central part of the United States, National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Chinard.
The worst of it, kind of stretches from California, Arizona, all the way up to Montana. So, the kind of a broad stretch of the last kind of peaking, some of the higher heat risk we're looking at today's kind of Arizona, including Phoenix Tucson, but then also up in Montana where we could see some record temperatures today. Forecasters say dangerous heat will continue through the weekend.
