Manjioni was scheduled to stand trial next month on state murder and weapons possession charges. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office accused him of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Manjioni pleaded guilty to stalking charges in a separate federal case last week.
He admitted to following Thompson to New York City and killing him. Now Manjioni's defense team is asking a state judge to throw out the remaining charges. They say it would violate his rights to keep prosecuting the case after he pleaded guilty. The Manhattan Day's Office says it will fight that request. For NPR News, I'm Samantha Max in New York.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott is in South Texas where construction on a controversial border project is on hold. Scott says he's conducting in on the ground evaluation in Big Ben National Park.

The New York Post reporter in April that Gomez was seen kissing a member of another office's congressional staff in 2023. A Gomez spokesman told the post at the time that the account shared with the outlet were
"not true," the Gomez later admitted to "personal mistakes" outside of his marriage.
