the 50 percent tariffs that were scheduled to take effect today on billions of dollars

worth of Canadian goods. As Dan Carpenter reports, Trump says the two countries reached

a trade agreement following their latest round-up negotiations." Canadian businesses had been bracing for the tariffs which were to kick in at midnight on an array of Canadian products from wine to honey to cement to hockey sticks. The new tariffs would have affected $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. As part of the agreement, Trump says the Keystone XL pipeline which had been killed by the Biden administration has been revived.

Prime Minister Mark Carney had spoken personally with Trump twice over the past two days ahead of the tariff deadline. Carney had said that negotiations have been intense and delicate and also that he was preparing for all eventualities signaling possible retaliation. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce had warned that tariffs made no sense for either country. For MPR News, I'm Dan Carpenter, in Toronto. It'll be Republican Congressmen

Byron Donald against former Congressman David Jolly in Florida's race for governor, Donald's

won the GOP nomination yesterday and Jolly was the choice of Democrats. Each is hoping to replace outgoing governor Ron DeSantis. The two-term governor is barred from running again because of term limits. Also in Florida, Republican Congressman Corey Mills lost his reelection bid. He was defeated in his GOP primary by former local TV news anchor Ryan Elijah in the state's seventh congressional district.

Mills is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations he assaulted a former girlfriend and violated campaign finance loss. Douglas Sol with member station WUSF says Democrats in Florida have chosen a member of the Democratic Socialist of America in the Party's Senate primary. Angie Nixon is a state representative from Jacksonville. She beat Alex Vinnman, a retired lieutenant colonel who testified against President Trump

during his first impeachment. Vinnman held a significant fundraising advantage over Nixon.

Nixon ran to the left of Vinnman. She was recently arrested after staging a sit-in at Governor Ron DeSantis's office. She had been protesting the state's new congressional map that increases the GOP advantage. She faces Republican incumbent U.S. Senator Ashley Moody in November. Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Moody to the role after Marco Rubio left to become president Trump's secretary of state. For NPR News, I'm Douglas Sol in Tampa.

Also in Florida, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz won the Democratic primary in a diverse redistricted seat. In California's special runoff election state senator Isha Wahab holds a narrow lead over Bay Area Rapid Transit President Melissa Hernandez in the race to serve out the remaining term of former Democratic Congressmen Eric Swallwell. This is NPR News from Washington.

Mining companies are setting their sights on two national monuments in Utah in response to President Trump reducing the size of their protected areas. Chris Clements with Member Station KNAU says the move opens the monuments to new mining claims. Soon after Trump announced the cuts, mining interests filed claims in the old boundaries of bears, years, and grant staircase Escalani National Monuments. Autumn Gillard, a member of the Pi U to Indian tribe of Utah,

says mining could hurt a landscape home to thousands of cultural sites. It's just very unfortunate that our public lands and Native American ancestral home lands are being put up so quickly on the chopping block. But others in the states say any mining would be regulated and could help reduce dependence on foreign adversaries. The federal government may not approve the claims since Trump's proclamations only allow them after September 11th. For NPR News, I'm Chris Clements
