"Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton, 5,000 sailors aboard th...

Lincoln Aircraft Carrier, headed home to California, and Pierre's Quil Lawrence reports

the ship is being relieved after nearly nine straight months at sea."

The USS George Washington, another aircraft carrier, has arrived in the Middle East to support

the war with Iran, according to U.S. Central Command. That means the Abraham Lincoln can finally

head home after a record breaking nine months at sea. Aircraft carriers look huge, but space below decks for the crew is tight, especially after more than 270 days with no shore leave. NPR has reported that Iranian attacks disrupted the Navy's regular supply chains, which led to food shortages, poor sanitation, and mental health issues. Sent Comcommander Admiral Brad Cooper made a visit to the Lincoln on Saturday and acknowledged

the strains of such a long deployment. President Trump was asked about the issue, and said the deployment was "not nearly long enough," Quil Lawrence and PR News. Meanwhile, Iran is dismissing President Trump's latest threats of economic pain and isolation Iran's foreign minister, Ambassador Rochee, says it will only increase hostility after Trump

threatened "crushing economic measures" against Iran. The federal debt topped $40 trillion

yesterday as the government continues to rapidly pile up debt and spending outstrips revenue by more than $2 trillion a year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant today blamed the Biden

administration. And remember, we did not get here at a day, that we were left with a mess.

The Biden administration had the highest deficit to GDP in history when we weren't at war or weren't in a recession. For 2025, we brought it down by more than a percent. The debt has exploded over several presidential administrations. Most recently, the federal government borrowed heavily when the pandemic began during President Trump's first term and continued into the Biden years to stabilize the economy and support of recovery.

More spending was approved last year when Trump signed a massive spending and tax cut bill. Another top White House official is leaving this time. It's legislative director James Brade. As NPR's Tamar Keith reports, this comes as November's midterm elections approach. President Trump announced the departure in a post on truth social, praising Brade for

the critical role he played in the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and helping

to defeat several war powers resolutions. Vice President J.D. Vance chimed in as well, saying Brade had one of the toughest jobs in the administration and delivered for the president at every turn. Brade will leave in September as the White House begins to prepare for a post-midterm reality. If Republicans lose control of either chamber of Congress, moving any of the president's remaining agenda items will get exponentially harder. Tamar Keith

and PR news the White House. The Dow dropped more than 700 points today. This is NPR News from Washington. The U.S. has carried out its first 20 deportations under an agreement for Liberia, except up to 1200 people who are not from the West African country. It's one of the Trump administration's largest efforts yet to deport people to countries other than their own.

They can seek asylum in Liberia if they wish. For decades, the U.S. has served adults with disabilities in their communities, rather than institutions, as NPR's genocometa reports the Trump administration is trying to reverse course. Civilings, Kaylee and Cody Bremdell grew up near the Jersey Shore. Both of them are blind and Cody who's 27 also has autism. After high school, for years, he was in

a kind of limbo until now. His family has found a community-based program funded by Medicaid where he learns life skills like job training at Jersey mics, where he loves "bopping" lettuce.

"You have to bang it down a couple times to loosen the court."

Now, the Justice Department has said it will no longer enforce a legal protection. That says states must provide services for adults with disabilities in their community. Here's Cody Sister Kaylee. That affects everything. Integrated setting affects school, where you can work. It affects the community-based programs like on my brother uses.

The law hasn't changed, but the administration may no longer enforce it, genocometa and PR news. Officials say the bodies of two Belgian mountaineers, missing since 1992 and the Swiss Alps have been found. Glacier Retreat revealed the remains from decades ago. A hiker discovered the remains. DNA tests confirmed their identities, such discoveries

have become more frequent as Switzerland's glaciers melt faster. This is NPR News. This week on the MPR Politics podcast, the Trump administration is taking credit for a major drop in violent crime. Murder, robbery, assault, all-down in big cities and small towns. We're going to dig into the numbers and unpack whether this is really as simple as the

President claims it is on the MPR Politics podcast.
