Trade talks between Canada and the United States broke down last night, triggering 50%
“tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of Canadian products.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the U.S. cannot break Canada that it has what the world wants in quote, "We will not allow any nation to determine our future." "In recent days, the United States proposed new terms. They run economic, unfair, and undermine the net benefits for Canada and called into question the reliability of any deal."
In short, they asked too much and they offered too little. Carney says retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will take effect September the 8th. The Trump administration trade representative Jamison Greer said the U.S. offer was forward-looking and would have led to supply chain coordination on aerospace
and critical mineral cooperation.
A federal judge says the Trump administration acted illegally when it stopped processing immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Brazil, Yemen, and Afghanistan. The State Department has said visa applicants from those countries were likely to need public
“assistance if they came to the U.S. and P.R.'s micro-copy reports.”
U.S. district judge Jeanette Vargas struck down the Trump administration's visa ban in part because she said it discriminated on the basis of nationality, in violation of federal immigration law. Under the immigration and nationality act, consular officers are barred from issuing visas to people who were unlikely to be able to support themselves in the U.S.
But that determination has to be made on a case-by-case basis. Judge Vargas said the visa ban overwrote the discretion of consular officers. The judge also set aside any visa denials that were based solely on the ban. Neither the State Department nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.
