Live from NPR News, in New York City, I'm Noahalie Psycho-Towell.

Trade talks between one of the U.S.'s closest ally broke down last night, triggering 50%

tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of Canadian products.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the U.S. cannot break Canada that it has what the world wants and, quote, "we will not allow any nation to determine our future." In recent days, the United States proposed new terms, the run economic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much and they offered too little.

He said retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will take effect on September 8. The Trump administration's trade representative James and Greer said the latest U.S. offer was forward looking and would have led to supply chain coordination on aerospace and

critical minerals cooperation.

Religious groups are speaking out after revelations that the Department of Homeland Security operated inside churches as part of immigration enforcement actions. And Paris Jason D'Rose reports the case involves Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota earlier this year.

Recent court filing suggests that ICE agents covertly entered congregations in the Twin Cities.

Faith-based groups were at the forefront of resistance to both the broader immigration actions there and specific instances in which federal agents shot and killed two protesters. The first Universalist Church of Minneapolis was among the congregations involved in the demonstrations and believes it was surveilled. Now the umbrella-unitary and universalist association is condemning the administration for

quote secretly spying on one of its congregations. Jason D'Rose and PR news. Indeacars have already been practicing laps in the streets of Washington DC today for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. Organizers say drivers will do 147 laps with the track length of 1.7 miles for a distance

of about 250 miles, but as WDT's Quinn Klein filter reports the event almost took a different path around Washington. The Indeacars series, owned by Detroit-based Roger Penske, will send drivers along

a temporary track winding on and around the national mall.

But the man who designed the race course, Penske Corporation President Buddenker says

it's not exactly what he first had in mind.

Originally, I had a track around the nation's capital, they required a congressional bill. I didn't know that. I couldn't get the 60 votes in the Senate. I had the House covered. President Trump, who has pushed for flashy celebrations of the nation's 250th birthday, signed

an executive order by-passing Congress to allow the race to proceed away from capital Hill, Trump is also scheduled to take a ceremonial lap around the track. This is NPR News from New York. It remains unclear as to who controls the straight of our moves, but Iran's president says the world accepts that the Islamic Republic has won the war because ships must seek its

approval to pass the straight. This comes after President Trump said he views the straight as an American territory, and as a U.S. official say new coordinated economic sanctions are to be announced on Monday. Spider-Man, brand new day, will be number one at movie theaters again this weekend. And Perez Bob Mandelo says it's closing in on some new milestones.

These days, Spidey is competing mostly with himself. What is happening to me? Goodman, brand new day, just past the final total per Spider-Man, no way home, to become

the third biggest film at American Boxing Office's ever.

What's in this on a high note, huh? To get to number two, we will have to beat Avengers any game, which Spidey was in and it should do that before Labor Day. I am totally out of control. Spidey is also at number three globally, but he'll need to web sling a little longer to

get to number two there. And even if he makes it, his victory will be short-lived since Marvel is re-releasing endgame in September to try to build momentum for Avengers doomsday. So out of reach for now, the number one spots held in the U.S. by Star Wars, the Force Awakens and globally by Avatar, Bob Mandelo and PR News.

Pope Leo is in the tiny landlocked Republic of San Marino, population 35,000. In remaining speaking to a crowd of tens of thousands, he said Christians must respond with mercy against the culture they quote "re-arms minds, words, and nations. This is NPR." For the first time, U.S. government debt has surpassed $40 trillion, a massive number that

affects your bottom line. This week on Consider Abyss, we connect the dots between the national debt and your car payment, your mortgage, your small business loan, and so much more. Listen to Consider Abyss, the daily afternoon news podcast from NPR.
