Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Amy Held.
Iran's president is defending the now-expired memo of understanding with the U.S. saying
“it's still the best way to end a stalled war.”
But Iran's new security chief is taking a more defiant stance, warning neighboring countries against joining new U.S. sanctions. And here's the DLL Shelter reports. The head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council said that Iran would retaliate in a "size-mic manner" to President Trump's new economic sanctions and that Iran would target
any country assisting the U.S. in an interview that aired on state TV, Moss and Rizai, he said that Iran would target tankers on oil-shipping routes, alternate to the state of Hormuz out of the Persian Gulf. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besend is expected to announce new aggressive sanctions on Iran on Monday, which President Trump has called "economic D-day."
Iran is already suffering from distressing economic circumstances that began before the war with the U.S. and Israel broke out in February. He'd deal out Shelter NPR news, Istanbul. 25 Indicard drivers racing in the nation's capital have revved into action.
“It's the first and, likely the last time, the race will circle the National Mall, and”
PR's Ava Burger reports.
President Donald Trump and First Lady of Melania Trump took a ceremonial lap in an armored
vehicle around the freedom to 50 grand prix. Trump was met with cheers across the track. All eyes were on the sky as multiple military flyovers erupted overhead. And service members were honored on the track. Then, finally, the moment fans had been waiting for, Trump waved the green flag from
his suite. 25-year navy veteran Mark Warulo appeared in between the openings of a fence with two friends, also navy vets. "This is just, it's fantastic, it's not good. I'm really excited about especially as a vet to have this in DC and everything we've seen."

“The Washington County Sheriff now saying it was human-caused, and 90,000 residents should”
either evacuate or be ready to go. From member station, KU and R. Maria Palma reports. The hook fire has burned more than 10,000 acres in Reno, Nevada. It remains a zero-person contained. About 400 personnel from local, estate, and federal agencies are working the fire, including
ground and air crews. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washington County and activated the Nevada National Guard to support the response. For NPR News, I'm Maria Palma in Reno. Hawaii is contending with yet another big storm. Tropical storm, okay, is bringing heavy
rainfall to the big island today before spreading westward across the remainder of the islands through Monday. It's affecting areas that are still recovering from last weekends, Hurricane Lala, and you're listening to NPR News. The rate of adults dying from alcohol use in the U.S. has gone up according to new federal
data and PR's Pink Wang reports. For adults 45 and older, the rate of alcohol induced deaths has increased by about 30% since 2014. It's up for both men and women, though deaths from alcohol are around 2 1/2 times higher in men.
The rate is down from a peak in 2021, during the COVID pandemic, but remains higher than it was pre-pendemic. The data is published in the CDC's morbidity and mortality weekly report. Pass CDC publications found some 2/3 of alcohol-related deaths come from the impacts of drinking over time, such as alcohol use disorder, heart, and liver diseases.
The remaining third died after drinking too much at once, which can cause things like
alcohol poisoning. The agency recommends that those who drink drink moderately and help others do the same, and that they seek help for substance abuse if they're concerned. Ping Huang and PR News Gallup Research finds the overall percentage of American adults who say they drink
has fallen to a record low, around 54%, this as more young people abstain from drinking. We're still learning about the effects of artificial intelligence on education, and education secretary Linda McMahon says with guardrails AI can be a useful tool. I have seen it work so well in the introductions that I've seen. McMahon speaking there to CNN, and as technology plays a growing role in the classroom,
the education department has issued guidance for educators, including preserving human-centered teaching. I'm Amy Held and this is NPR News. For the past 25 years, a rare Pacific ecosystem has been undisturbed. Now, the Trump administration is opening nearby waters to commercial fishing.
The Americans' fishermen have never had a better ally in the White House than Donald Trump.
This week on the Sunday Story, we discuss what's at stake for this wild ecosystem.
