The tech company meta is settling with a group of states that sued it, alleging that it
“designed its social media platforms to be addictive to kids, and lined to the public about”
the harms they faced on those platforms, and PR's John Rootich reports." According to the proposed settlement, the owner of Facebook and Instagram would pay up to $17
billion to the states over the coming 10 years, the money would be used for things like
after school programs, public health advertising, and youth mental health programs. meta also agreed to change features on its platforms to make them safer for minors. The changes include a two-hour time limit and a nighttime block for kids under 18. minors also won't see how many likes they get, and won't be able to use certain beauty filters, and meta will take on an independent auditor.
The settlement is subject to the approval of the judge in the case, but if it moves forward, it could change the landscape around a wave of lawsuits against social media companies. Midterm conventions aren't really a thing in modern American politics, but the Republican Party is trying something a little unconventional to excite its voters in a year when the president and his policies are deeply unpopular. He will be there both nights with a speaking role to close things out.
Vice President J.D. Vance will take the prime time slot the first night, and there will
also be numerous presentations driving home the GOP midterm message about tax cuts, public safety, and immigration enforcement, Tamra Keith and PR News. He's coming on the heels of Tom Feldman, who played Draco Malfoy in the movies and played his adult counterpart in the play, which is a sequel to the original books. Feldman's presence boosted the box office, producers hope Grant will do the same.
