Helicopters are carrying aid into isolated mounting communities in Nepal where roads

The death toll from catastrophic flooding this week has risen to at least 538 with more than 1,500 people missing. NPR's D. Hadid reports about 90 Americans remain unaccounted for. Many of the missing Americans appear to be Hindu pilgrims, like 28-year-old Aroyad Narayali's in-laws.
Riley says Neil and Kamari Sharma and Ramesh Sharma were on a pilgrimage to Circle Mount Kaelash, a mountain revered by Hindus.
They were really excited to be able to participate in for them an incredible event.
But they lost contact when the floods took place. We have been tirelessly looking for them, that's just been the most torturous part that anyone can imagine is not knowing where your family is and having to wait to hear if they're dead or not. It's one of the devastating things that the family is going through right now.

D. Hadid and P.N. News, federal safety regulators say defective radio transmissions may have played a part in a miss app earlier this month between a passenger jet and Marine One. And P.R.'s Joe Hernandez reports. One afternoon in early August, Marine One lifted off near the White House around the same time that an envoy air flight took off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport
in nearby Arlington, Virginia.
The National Transportation Safety Board says there may have been a breakdown in communication between the military and air traffic controllers at the airport. According to the agency's preliminary report, Marine One radioed the airport twice to notify the controllers they were about to take off. One transmission wasn't received and the other it was unreadable.
One week earlier, the military and air traffic control officials at the airport had met to discuss communication issues.

N.P.R.s. Kirk Sigler reports authorities believed the blaze was caused by humans. Federal data show that more than three quarters of all wildfires in the U.S. are human caused, be it arson or just negligence, such as a down power line or a spark from a vehicle. Kelly Payle is a researcher at Headwater's Economics. She says greater public awareness about the risks has helped.

Payle says communities can zone, so that infrastructure is clear of hazardous fuels,

President Trump is renaming Lake Ontario, Lake America for official U.S. government use as his trade fight with Canada intensifies. Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the U.S. geographic naming system to
adopt the new name, though Canada is under no obligation to do the same. Trump had floated the change in recent days as trade tensions between the two countries escalated.
