Authorities in Nepal and China say the death toll from catastrophic flooding along the border
“of Nepal and Tibet last week has reached more than 900 with more than 3,000 others missing.”
For the first time, Chinese authorities have released the nationalities of the 261 missing
foreigners, which includes 18 Americans and as empires Jennifer Pack reports, there are dozens more U.S. citizens missing in Nepal." Officials called for a moment of silence at a press conference in Tibet on Sunday. Then, Supang Chang, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazard and Environment, said this disaster started when a massive chunk of ice broke off a glacier.
It sent a rush of water, ice and mud to smash through the Jelong Raswa border checkpoint. "The whole thing took less than 7 minutes," he says. "There was no time for warning or to flee." The floods continued down to Nepal. Their authorities gave the nationalities of the missing very early on, in contrast, Chinese

“A flash flood raced across the bottom of Arizona's Grand Canyon this weekend, leading”
to evacuations, Chris Clements of member station KNAU reports as of Sunday evening, one person has died and about 15 other people remained missing or unaccounted for. On Saturday afternoon, between a half-inch and an inch of rain fell on parts of the Grand Canyon in about 30 minutes. The resulting flood swept down a creek bed to the Colorado River, splintering bridges,
demolishing houses and temporarily beaching boaters. The flood also mangled the only pipeline that delivers water from roaring springs to hotels and businesses on the South Rim. Officials say they used hill copters to evacuate more than 60 people from the bottom of the canyon, with more evacuations to follow.
For NPR News, I'm Chris Clements and Facts-Aff. "Juri deliberations resume in Massachusetts Monday and the trial of Lindsey Clancy, who's charged with killing her three children, as Deborah Becker. For member station, WBU reports, Clancy's lawyers are using an insanity defense." Lindsey Clancy's defense says she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and should not
be held criminally responsible for killing her children. In Massachusetts, that means that the prosecution has to prove Clancy was mentally well enough to understand or control her actions. Boston Defense Attorney Keith Helper and says that could work in Clancy's favor. "Massachusetts law is actually more favorable to defendants than many states."
National data show the insanity defenses argued in only about 1% of felony cases. For NPR News, I'm Deborah Becker and Boston. "And this is NPR News." A commercial tanker's ship caught fire near the straight-of-four moose early Monday. Mirron's Navy says the ship was transiting an illegal route south of the straight when it
was stopped after hitting two naval mines. It's the latest and a weekend of attacks. U.S. forces hit Iranian rocket launches on an island in the straight.
It was the first U.S. military action in a month.
Later, Iran said it responded to those strikes by firing ballistic missiles at two U.S. military facilities in Jordan. Health officials in North Carolina say some people may have been exposed recently to rabies through baby goats at a mobile petting zoo. For a member station, W.U.N.C. Bradley George reports that the infected animals traveled
to 10 locations around the states. The goats from farm adventures in Ierdel County were likely exposed to rabies by a skunk that got into their pen. The petting zoo held mobile events for children and the elderly around the state. It's not clear how many people may have been in contact with the animals.
But organizers are trying to notify people who may have handled the baby goats. Human rabies' cases are rare. The state health department says none have been reported in North Carolina since 2011.
