“Republicans fail to retain control of Congress at the midterm elections.”

President Trump closed out the first night of the midterm Republican
convention, speaking at length about the Iran war. The MPR's Tamer Keith reports a war started out on popular and has only gotten worse. The Iran war is a liability for the president and his party in a midterm year when voters say their top issue is a fortibility in his convention speech Trump insisted in the face of evidence to the contrary that prices are coming down.
And food prices and almost every other item are rapidly going down and by the way, oil would be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran, which is taking place right there. We'll win it.
“Trump initially said the war would be over within six weeks.”

Missouri's Republican Secretary of State said to appear before the state's Supreme Court Thursday morning over contempt charges, saying the list public radio station Rose and Palm has the latest in the state's chaotic legal battle over a congressional map back by President Trump to help Republicans hold control of the U.S. House.
The Missouri Supreme Court had ruled last week that a referendum on the map could go on the ballot, meaning the plan couldn't be used this year. But a federal judge issued a temporary order Tuesday stating that Secretary of State
“Denny Hoskins could only use the GOP leaning map lawmakers approved in 2025, which”
in appeals court let's stand for now. Hoskins then told local election officials to use the Trump back map and the Missouri Supreme Court ordered him to explain why he shouldn't be held and contempt. Redistricting opponents contend the Missouri Supreme Court's orders still bars Hoskins from forcing election officials to use the 2025 map and are appealing to the U.S.

Rhode Island's incumbent democratic governor has lost his bid for a second full term.
In the state's democratic primary Wednesday voters chose former C.V. S. Executive Helena Folk's over Governor Dan McKee. This is MPR News. Three organizers of an annual Hong Kong vigil marking the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown are to be sentenced Friday.
They are to be sentenced under the China Imposed National Security Law that has curbed Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement. The three were convicted of inciting subversion in base up to 10 years in prison. The vigil their group organized through tens of thousands for decades. The federal government plans to remove wild horses from public lands in Colorado this
month. Even as state leaders are asking to freeze operations, Rachel Cohen with the Mountain West News Bureau has more. Members of Colorado's congressional delegation and governor Jared Poles are asking the federal government to stop using helicopters to gather wild horses on public
lands. The immediate concern is the inhumane nature of these helicopter round-ups in which horses are terrified injured and scared. The plea comes after the Bureau of Land Management removed nearly 900 horses in Colorado in August and nine animals died in the operation.
The agency says it's round-ups protect the animals and range lands when populations are above target levels. It plans to remove 245 more horses in Colorado starting next week.
