Did you go down town for the for the big race? I went to the National Book Festival but I avoided the race. You are such an helpless nerd but it's nice that there people who where was the National Book Best Festival. It was at the convention center near Chinatown and it was cool I got to see Cynthia
Rivo give a talk. Martin's course says he was there unfortunately that one filled up two hours before they even opened the doors but I did see him and Ben Mankowitz just like in the vicinity but I didn't unfortunately get to see them talk but I saw Cynthia Rivo and she gave a great talk about her new book. For all you other movie nerds Ben Mankowitz. Is a host on TCM right? He's one of them. And I was more upset about missing him than missing
Scorses you. Well yeah well I depend on TCM I got to tell you yesterday they had all these Catherine Hepburn, Carigrette, comedies on during the day, bloody ending with Philadelphia story in the evening and it just it clears your head of all the horrors but you know watching the race you know on Fox was kind of interesting because they turned it into a three-hour campaign commercial with the president what a great guy he was and how American this was and that patriotic this
was and you know meanwhile everybody I know in DC was like damn I hate this race it's like they can't get around the traffic's bad. Can't go downtown I'm sure that was you Riley. Yeah pretty much
“I just avoided that area like the plague this weekend. Yeah well and as well you should have um”
Melania as I think paid to be there and she and her husband did not seem to get along great at the event but look this is all faulty roll um there's a lot of a big news that happened over
the weekend so why don't we kick off with that? All right well our first story today is about Trump
at a South Carolina rally kicking off kind of a new strategy for the midterms and the problem that we have is they say that Trump does great when he's on the ballot but when he's not on the ballot his people don't come and they don't vote for senators congressmen and other Republicans and that these people they're running their great but if Trump isn't actually on the ballot so what I really want you to do is pretend please that I'm on the ballot just come and go to
so avoid. Yeah I you know don't does it happen very often but uh yeah please pretend he's on the ballot please pretend he's on the ballot please pretend the least popular president in our history is on the ballot please pretend that this guy who every single program that he has backed is unpopular is on the ballot in fact it's kind of your obligation because the way the congress works now is that they're just a rubber stamp for Trump if they're Republicans and so any Republican you vote for is a vote to empower
Trump and any Republican that you defeat is one less vote to empower Trump and that's all you need
To know if you don't want to have illegal wars you don't want to kill people ...
is illegally extra judicially you don't want to destroy the economy you don't want to destroy
infrastructure you don't want destroy our environment you don't want to destroy democracy in America you don't want to do that vote like Trump is on the ballot he's absolutely right you know there was more to that rally because every time we see Trump and public we learn more about his
“physical and mental health in fact that's why we don't see him that often and at this rally he”
rambled he was somewhat incoherent he ranted he didn't look healthy he's clearly in the midst of a rapid decline and so the biggest message that came out of the rally wasn't what he said that's what he looked like and by the way there's a lot of controversy over that this weekend as well because of the story came out which a number of doctors said that they're deeply disturbed about Trump's late game and I don't want to body shape our president anybody he feels comfortable
in his fight but they felt that he'd gained 25 pounds since he took office and in an 80 year old with a heart condition etc it sounded that probably wasn't so bright I say to the doctors my journal business let him do what he wants to do if he wants to have another burger let him have another burger guys earned it it's worth it you know what I need you know I'm getting it right week week that thought do you like my Cabo Verde jersey here okay ordered this during the World Cup because I
felt they were the underdogs and we stand for the underdogs and it's really the never yeah it's just
that here but you know I feel by proud it's it's the goalie voginhas jersey not personally and just you know knock off and I feel I feel proud I feel standing up for tiny island nations everywhere anywhere where I least speaking of standing up for small nations or small nations standing up to America what's your lead story trade negotiations between the US and Canada collapsed after the US introduced last-minute demands targeting Canadian cultural protections industrial subsidies in bilingual labeling
rules in response Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the US of mounting an attack on Canadian sovereignty and pledged dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs on American goods the trade breakdown
triggered immediate US tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian products while Canada's
counter tariffs are scheduled to take effect on September 8th yeah I'm sure there's going to be a mad scramble to undo this but if this continues as it is it's going to be super bad news for the US economy not good for the Canadian economy but the Canadians were left with no choice the US came in
“and they asked for a bunch of things that were just absolutely ridiculous I think you have to remember”
also that there is as Prime Minister Carney pointed out a US candidate trade agreement there's the North American free trade agreement the successor to NAFTA that was negotiated by whom negotiated that it was responsible for that oh yeah Trump anyway so Trump doesn't like the deal it negotiated so he just renegotiates again but you know at the last minute they started throwing in some crazy stuff including you know things like you know Canada couldn't use French in certain
areas and and and so forth and the Canadians are like you know now you're messing with our sovereignty Trump's response to all this was Canada wants all the privileges of being the 51st state with none of the responsibility of course that's classic Trump projection he wants them to be the 51st state nobody in Canada wants to be the 51st state nobody wants to be part of the sinking ship that is the United States right now and nobody wants Donald Trump making their decisions for them
when Mark Carney or their government which is not a perfect government let's be clear about that
“but when those people who are serious professionals could be doing the job as they are and I think”
Carney showed a lot of courage and when he got on television it was like okay we're ready to fight we want to have a war with us you can have a war with us you pointed out that Canada's diversifying its trade-based dramatically around the world so it's no longer dependent on the U.S. and he also pointed out how dependent the U.S. is on Canada for things like energy imports and raw material imports like aluminum and like steel so while Trump was at the race trying to
I don't know show that he was good buddies with people in the U.
Ford and Chevy you know make the motors for the cars in Indianapolis racing or Roger Pinsky this
sort of big figure behind the race he was screwing the car industry he was screwing people work in the car industry he was screwing people or consumers of the car industry or consumers of other
“products made in Canada it's it's a disaster and I think it's important to note it is a disaster”
on top of disasters in terms of the trade policy in this country which for the past year and half has been the worst trade policy the U.S. has ever seen with trade wars and tariffs and all sorts of other things that push up prices that don't achieve anything that undermine the international trading system that undermine U.S. standing in the world that forced countries defined other partners that weaken us that strengthen our rivals at U.S. trade policies and mess and this week

august 26. The Department of Justice plans to appeal to the Supreme Court after the second
and 9th U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals roll that it cannot bypass send a confirmation by using legal work around to place non-confirmed officials into acting U.S. attorney roles federal judges affirmed the disqualifications of interim heads in Nevada and upstate New York rolling that federal
“vacancy laws do not allow the executive branch to grant top prosecutorial powers simply by”
altering job titles or delegating duties. All the DOJ continues to rely on first assistance and special attorneys to lead at least 12 federal offices across the country legal experts doubt the Supreme Court will take up the case given the clear consensus among lower courts. Not just consensus, okay. This is one of those cases where the law is written down it is extremely clear. The administration is trying to sidestepped the law. The administration
is going in with its traditional argument that the president is the president is the king is the emperor he gets to do whatever he wants and even though the Supreme Court are the ones that sort of kicked him in that direction with their decision a couple of years ago they have drawn the line in certain kinds of places and I suspect this is going to be one of them. Imagine the world in which Trump can just point every U.S. attorney regardless of the Congress
and we get into, I don't know, prosecuting Trump's enemies or battles over election results, et cetera, not good. Step on the slippery slope towards authoritarianism we've got to hope that the Supreme Court just says, you know, we're not going to take up this case or they reaffirm the lower court decision. >> All right, I'm going to do a really story, correct? Yeah, okay, cool. All right. California attorney general, Rob Bonta, canceled planned settlement talks over the
proposed $110 billion paramount Warner Brothers discovery merger, accusing paramount of leaking
and misrepresenting prior negotiations. 12 state attorneys general have sued to block the deal on anti-trust grounds, Albonta maintains that any settlement rule prior structural remedies, like divestitures or spin-offs. Paramount defends the merger as pro-competitive of peace is growing financial pressure from daily delay fees if the acquisition fails to close by September 30th. >> Look, anything that stops that from happening is good. It is too much power in the hands of

going to get worse from here. So if state attorney general will send other kinds of legal challenges can derail this thing, that would be good for the United States of America. And our last story for today, the father of an active duty U.S. Navy sailor deployed a broad
in the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln was taken into federal immigration custody by Border Patrol agents
following a traffic stop in QS Florida. The sailor expressed heartbreak on social media over his
“father's detainment, while serving an extended deployment in the Middle East, noting that his”
family was actively awaiting approval on his father's green card application. The department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the arrest was for unlawful entry stating that having
a family member in the military does not exempt individuals from federal immigration enforcement.
These guys are monsters. And, you know, their monsters in terms of their migration policy, they're also monsters in terms of the degree to which they disrespect the people in our military every way they can. Trump disrespects them with his words. He disrespects them with their actions. They disrespect them when they make them stay at sea for 250 days and don't have the food to provide them with or the supplies that they need. They disrespect when they lie about the casualties
that take place in these wars. This is just another story of inhumanity. You know, tragically, each one of these stories is not some top-line story about thousands of people. It's individual families getting torn apart. People trying to do the right thing. Imagine you come to this country and you say to your kids, "Go serve in the military, go serve the country, go try to make America great." And the response of America is to say, "Well, we know you were
going through the legal process to become an American. You were doing everything right. You were contributing, but fuck you were going to send you out of the country." Because we don't like brown people.
