I'm David Roscoff joined by Riley Festler and Minas Stein. We got a lot to cover today, there's a lot of things going on in the world.
“I think one of the things that's most interesting to me though before we get into all”
the serious stories was all the coverage and responses following the announcement of the death of Donald Martin yesterday because I'm so used to seeing everything triggering people in this society and people sort of claiming celebrities for one side or the other.
And so Jimmy Carter would die and there would always be some Republican out there saying
something nasty about him or vice versa on the right. And the response to Dali Parton and Red State to the blue states from Republicans from Democrats was universal, universally loved. And I think what's interesting about that is that she was very much an activist, activist on LGBT issues, activist on educational issues, activists on union activists, you know
“sort of rights of the poor and I think I found it moving and it's been a long time since”
one person could manage to elicit the same kind of response out of people on the right in the left. I'm wondering what you guys thought. Yeah, I mean, I was surprised that there weren't more like snide comments from people online because I feel like I've just become used to seeing that anytime a celebrity dies because usually there's at least one group of people that don't like them. But I've seen nothing but universal kind of sorrow and memorializing
her for Dali Parton, which is really interesting. And which she deserved. Yeah, I think she did and I think, you know, she sort of, you know, she, you know, obviously, you see
a million clips from her, but one of the clips was like, you know, I don't like any
of the politicians. She said, I don't think they're in touch with what people need. And
“I think, you know, we've got to focus on what people need. And that resonates with me and”
the current environment. And resonates with me because I think a lot of people are fed up with the system right and what. And what they want is people stand up and help them and she did that as an activist throughout her life. I don't know. I found it very moving. I was not, you know, I wouldn't say it was any more or less the Dali Parton fan than anybody else. But clearly, she accomplished a lot as a singer, but but also as a as a as a unifying force in our
fractured society. Anyway, let's get to the news. And start us wherever you'd like to start. All right, we're going to start with Dali and Graham, one South Carolina's GOP primary runoff for the U.S. Senate, defeating five term congressmen Ralph Norman. Back to heavily by President Trump and his MAGA Inc. Super PAC, Graham was initially appointed to fill the seat following the death of her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham. She now advances to the November
Special Election to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the heavily Republican state. I mean, look, you know, this is ridiculous. This, this sort of, this is an embarrassment to the United States America. This is a nepo Senator. She has no business having this job. In debate, she proved it. She doesn't understand foreign policy. She admitted it. She doesn't understand what to do about domestic policy. She admitted it. She is as vapid as can be.
She poses giving everybody healthcare because something something socialism. She is just an
invisible and empty suit. And, you know, the reality is that Trump stepped up behind her because
he wants a loyal vote. He doesn't, you know, he doesn't have any interest in the long term future for the people of South Carolina for the people of this country. And, you know, the any interest of person that she is running against is a doctor. As somebody has devoted their whole life to public services quite accomplished. And, you know, in any normal circumstance, this wouldn't even be close. But, you know, it's highly politicized, highly politicized state.
And, the Republicans are, you know, Trump is choosing to flex his muscle and ...
"I could nominate a rock to the Senate in the megabasal vote for it." And, he's come as close to that
“as, as he ever has. Because he's, he's nominated, you know, a poted plant to the Senate.”
Well, Canada has announced their retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. with up to 50 percent tariffs
on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, including steel, dairy, and other consumer products. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canadian officials framed the matching duties set to take effect September 8th, along side a $5.4 billion support package for domestic businesses, as a necessary defense against U.S. efforts to subordinate Canadian industries. Yeah, I saw somebody online saying, you know, this is a crazy trade war. There's no strategy.
There's no clear goal. This is just about Trump's own personal animals with the Canadians.
And I thought, yeah, what else is now? That defines the Iran war, that defines all the other trade
wars, that defines Greenland, that defines everything he does. There is no strategy. There's no clear goal. There's no clear benefit to the United States. There's no thought given to what the knock-on consequences of the action will be. It's just what is Trump feel in his gut. And we, you know, our ship of state is driven by the rumblings in the tummy of this decaying 80-year-old oligarch. It's shocking, except that it's standard operating procedure.
And, you know, Canada is willing to wait it out. Canada has the cards as they say. And it's going to be very tough because Trump is going to want a solution, which he can claim as a victor. But, of course, you know, that's also inscrutable.
“Because remember, the trade deal Trump is breaking. The one that Carney has made repeated references”
to is the one that was negotiated in Trump's name the last time around under Trump. The trade deal Trump wants to revise as the Trump trade deal. So, you know, it just sends a message to the world. The United States is not trustworthy. The United States is not rational. The United States is no longer a leader. We are a ship, a drift at sea. And a minister, everybody else in the Senate, it's bad news. And, you know, it's going to be bad news
for the GOP because I don't think it should come as a big shock that a lot of the people who will be most hurt by the trade problems with Canada are going to be people in swing states who are going to lose jobs, pay more for food, pay more for raw materials, pay more for cars. And, you know, it's bad politics. But Trump doesn't even care about his own party, which is ironic given the darling Graham story. The party cares about Trump, but he doesn't care
about that. So, probably his kids could just, you know, do a little bit of a dissertation on because
“I think that's probably how their entire familial life was organized. Anyway, what else you got?”
Continuation of the United States and our administration being an immense to society and the larger world. The Trump administration has paused at routine U.S. visa appointments worldwide to conduct a mandatory global training initiative for consular officers focused on screening out
applicants lightly to depend on public benefits. All the administration defends the measure as essential
for domestic security. Human rights groups have strongly condemned the crackdown for creating widespread instability, discriminating against ethnic minorities and violating due process. Yeah, almost no immigrants depend on public benefits. I mean, this is just a complete fraud. It follows by a couple of days. This move to essentially get rid of everybody who's here on a B1 or B2 visa who has sought to claim asylum, which is 200,000 people who are following the law.
And these measures are contrary to law, contrary to the law, contrary to the spirit of the United States,
Contrary to the interests of the United States to attract people here.
morning about, you know, the decline and the percentage of Indian students coming to the United
“States of the study. And it was something like 56 percent. I mean, it was a very, very substantial”
decline. And, you know, Steven Miller may think, great, fewer brown people. But the reality is, of course,
that what has fueled greatness in the United States and made the United States particularly strong power in the global era is bringing immigrants here, attracting the best minds, creating an environment where the best people want to stay, having those people contribute to the development or our society. And we are now turning them away. They are not going to come here. We are committing intellectual suicide as a country which is economic suicide, which is an inevitably
going to produce a decline in our power and relevance of war, all because of the inherent racism
of a few folks that have managed to seize control of the United States of America.
Well, some minor updates on the Iran War. I have to do it at least a couple times a week. Yeah, otherwise you go into the withdrawal. Yeah, exactly. Global oil prices dipped today following an announcement by Iran and Oman that they have advanced talks on creating a temporary shipping lane and coordinating mine clearing in the straight-of-form moves. Practical framework offers brief respite amid an ongoing conflict, which is severely disrupted.

And in fact, Trump been there sort of MOU that came and went.
Gave a run, everything that they want it. The reach out to China is as we described yesterday. The death now for Scott Baton's best and shortly of economic war against Iran. If China wants to be supportive of Iran, our efforts are not going to be successful. But I don't think our allies are going to be as supportive as the U.S. wants them to be. It'll be interesting to see what countries like Russia do. I don't think they will be cooperative either.
Even though, by the way, the CIA director went off on a secret mission to Moscow yesterday. Interesting. A secret mission is not so much of the secret. It wasn't there that long. He spoke to intelligence officials. What was the message? Help us get this war in Iran over.
“Help us with the Iran war and will help you with the Ukraine. Who knows? The only thing we know”
is that if a senior level member of the Trump administration meets with Putin or Putin representatives
in Moscow, no good can come of it. It is always a capitulation. It always ends up helping the interests of Russia.
It always undermines the interests of the United States. So when I see a headline and that some senior member of the administration has gone off to do this kind of thing, I cringe and wait for the other shoe to fall. Well, here's a fun one to go out on. Justice Department attorneys argued in August 25th court filing that the Kennedy Center faces structural collapse or financial ruin without President Trump's fundraising support and the inclusion of his name on the building
Grounds.
The filing came in response to an emergency motion from a board member who challenged the board's
“recent vote to add Trump's name to the venue's exterior after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper”
previously ruled that only Congress holds the authority to alter the memorial's name. The government claims that the addition merely acknowledged Trump's role in securing renovation funds and there is a scheduled hearing tomorrow to address the dispute. Yeah, look, I mean, I can't imagine that the Trump administration is going to win on this dispute. I say that for a number of reasons, one is they've been losing so far. Secondly, these arguments
are stupid. Yes, today, as they were making the arguments in court, there was a story in the
Washington Post that said that the Kennedy Center had fallen on financial hard times,
precisely at the moment that they changed their name to the Trump Kennedy Center. And that they were in, you know, it literally, it was, here's the data, the proves, the opposite of what the government is arguing. But, you know, this is also something more than this. This is hedgeulent Trump toddler Trump three-year-old Trump wanting to kick over the blocks of some other kids want to rearrange them. It's, it's Trump essentially saying, well, if you're not going to do it
my way, then we're just going to tear the whole thing down. Which, by the way, it's his attitude towards the United States of America. You're not going to vote for me. We're not going to give you disaster relief. You're not going to vote for me. We're not going to give you the funds. The Congress is promised to you that you are, oh, you're not going to support me in this, that I'm going to tear it down. I'm going to go after you. I'm going to go after my adversaries. Everything that we do is
govern by the pettiness and the personal psychological difficulties of the guy who's president of the United States right now. And this is just a perfect metaphor for it. Either let me change the name of the Kennedy Center to the Trump Kennedy Center or I will tear it down because his prior argument, let me change the name or I will shut it down. Didn't seem to work because a court says you can't you can't do that. Anyway, we'll forward to the court case on this. There was one other court case

“of your favorite cases. And frankly, I don't mean to make light of it because it's I think it's a”
very important decision. Yeah, meta platforms has agreed to pay up to 16.68 million dollars to settle a
lawsuit with 29 states that accused the company of designing addictive products that harm the youth mental health. As part of the proposed settlement, which still requires judicial approval, meta will implement night use blocks daily screen time limits enhanced age verification and stronger parental controls for teen users. Despite agreeing to the financial payout and safety commitments, meta continues to deny all liability and allegations raised in the lawsuit. Yeah, well, good luck
with that meta. I mean, first of all, it's kind of disturbing that a company like meta is so large that it just considers a $17 billion settlement the cost of doing business and will sort of move on from there. My sense is there will be many, many more lawsuits like this. My sense is that
“the expenses will pile up for meta on these things. And ultimately, I think we're going to go the way”
there have a lot of the Europeans seem to be going, which is much, much stricter controls on access to social media platforms for underage people, for for for young people, because it's bad for that it's bad for their academic developments, bad for their social developments, bad for their psychological development. We know it. We have enough data. It's not just speculation. And these companies also embed within their products, things that make them more addictive,
make them better platforms for bullies, make them more dangerous in terms of privacy issues or security issues. And these are things that have got to be addressed for a long time, platforms like meta have said, not our responsibility. We just put a product out there. It's up to the people how they use it. But that's not how we deal with cigarettes. It's not how we deal
With cars.
to protect people. And those regulations are going to start because of the towering of our political
“class to the tech bros. In the courts, I think, but as this happening elsewhere in the world,”
I would imagine, in a few years, the United States is going to come around with much stricter regulations on these things. By the way, on the next issue of still consciousness, one of the things we're going to talk about, next edition will be the battle over AI regulation,
data center regulation in particular. And how that is somehow uniting the right
and the left in the United States, all these tech regulatory issues seemed extraneous. But we're
“at a moment, I think an inflection point where everybody realizes how heavily they impact their”
lives. And I think it's going to lead to a period of several years of more active informed consumer oriented regulatory measures. They sell up some part of what determines that will be the upcoming
election, which is now 70 days away, I think. So that's obviously something will be covering
