Hello and welcome to the DSR Daily. I'm David Rothkuff. I'm joined by Riley Festler and Minestine,
and we're here to help usher you into July.
I don't know how it became July, but it's July. Are you? I see Minas wearing a sweater because the weather report says it's going to be 99 degrees today.
Great plan, Minna. Thanks. And as a meteorologist, the meteorologist for this podcast, it's important to me that I tell people what they should be wearing
when they think they're homes. Don't listen to Minna, don't do it. Because tomorrow it's going to be 104 here, 105. And like a lot of America, like 200 million Americans. I'm going to be in this double heat dome.
And frankly, you're not going to care about anything else. Stuff we say, you're going to be like, oh, my God. It's too darn hot. But we'll talk for a little bit about what's going on in the news. I mean, yesterday, for example, the Supreme Court
issued its last rulings for the year are the session. That's good.
“Going home for the summer, how much damage can they do?”
Well, these guys, you never know.
You just never know. They are wrecking balls for democracy. Anyway, want to start off there? Yeah, let's get it started. Because the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship
by rejecting a president Trump's executive order that aimed to deny a citizenship to children born in the US to undocumented or temporary residents relying on a long settled understanding of the 14th Amendment that justices dismissed
the administration's argument that these children are not subjected to US jurisdiction. This ruling definitively blocks a cornerstone of a relation policy that never took effect, but would have impacted more than 250,000 children annually.
Don't be so hasty in your assessment of this. The 14th Amendment of the Constitution is pretty clear.
“Basically says, if you're born here, you're a citizen.”
And yet, because our Supreme Court is special, the decision to uphold the Constitution and the literal letter of its contents was six to three, but it was really closer to five to four, because Kavanaugh wrote a merely mouth descent,
which or concurrence, it was sort of half one and half of the other. But you've got to stop and think, now, just wait a minute, how is it that the literal language of the Constitution is turned into a claim flip
by these guys, you know, a Lito and Thomas and Gorsuch are like, yeah, no, it doesn't mean that. We're going to make stuff up. By the way, the stuff they make up and Thomas wrote a 91-page descent is fabulous,
not found in history. They don't care. Gorsuch is just a comments made it absolutely clear as Robert's comments have done in the past that they view their job as to make stuff up as they go along.
They don't use those words, but that's where they are. They will tell us what kind of government we have and the Constitution is just one more reference to. So as happy as we should be that at the end of the day, because of Justice Roberts
and Justice Coney Barrett, loading with the three sane people on the court, it passed and the Constitution was preserved, we're in very precarious waters, because these people are truly
out there and not doing anything like the job of Supreme Court Justice should be doing. They are really just making it up to serve their paymasters, the people who make big donations to them, many of which were not disclosed in their financial reports,
Which also came up in the past couple of days.
Anything else you want to talk about from the court? - Another 63 decision. - Oh, great, well, I'm sure that was a good one. - In a 63 decision along ideological lines, the Supreme Court struck down a post-water gate law
that restricted how much money political parties can spend on their candidates. Writing for the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh declared the limit and unconstitutional violation
of First Amendment rights,
continuing a decade-long judicial trend of dismantling campaign finance regulation. While Republican challengers argue that political parties cannot corrupt their own candidates, the dissenting liberal justices warrant
the ruling will foster corruption and undermine democratic legitimacy. - Yeah, this is like Son of Citizens United, and it's really bad. And it probably is not going to get as much attention
from the media as other cases that came out yesterday. But basically, this is just one more statement that says, according to our Supreme Court,
if you have more money, you have more influence.
So the richest Americans get to be the most politically influential Americans, and that means we're not a democracy. We are an oligarchy. That's why since Citizens United, the percentage of the number of donations given by billionaires
has gone up 14,000%. This says, they can give as much as they want to political parties who can then give it out to whom ever they want, however they want.
“It's outrageous, but it does drive home a really important point.”
And that is sometimes you hear people these days saying that we have to save democracy in America. I've got some bad news for you. It's too late. If you want America to be a democracy,
then your job is to restore democracy in America. We are not a democratic country. If we are a country that believes that the people with the most money get to have the most political influence, that our government is to be run
to serve the rich at the expense of everybody else. And if that does not get fixed, and they would have to write the laws very carefully so not to be overturned by this court, or they would have to change the way the court is constituted,
or I think both, then we've got a trouble. Personally, I think federal elections ought to be federalized. I think they ought to be 30, 60 days long, and I think they ought to be federally financed.
I don't think there should be any private donations, just like they are in many, many countries around the world.
“Because that's how you avoid corruption.”
Give everybody a few bucks. They get to go on the TV. They get to go and post things. They campaign. And people judge them based on what they say,
and not on how many hundreds of millions of dollars they've got supporting them. It's a crisis here in America. And that was ruling that you really need to take to heart and turn into a rallying cry.
- Let's get back to some good news. Democratic socialist Malah Keroz,
achieved a stunning upset in Colorado's first congressional district
by defeating nearly 30-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Diana de Gett in two days of primary. Her victory highlights a growing nationwide progressive wave against establishment Democrats. Despite some mixed local results that saw moderate U.S.
Senator John Hicken-Luper fend off his own left-wing challenger. The primary night also featured notable wins for progressive
“Mani Routonel in a crucial swing district”
and attorney general Phil Wiser in the Democratic gubernatorial race. - Meditirium yoga jogging, not exciting. - Really? I'm a strier, total strier. - Steuere, how do you feel? The strier is clear? - Yes, I have a lot of time to get over 1000 euros. - Hastu-gahalme connections or ex-supacrafts? - No, only the Viso strier is. - Wow, and that's easy. - Sure, the market is almost automatic. - I feel so, so exciting. - Hold your money, sir.
Upgabber frist 130, sir. - What? "Shastu Ganzen-span-T-Metviso-Stoyan." - Oh, yeah. - Hey, it's David and I hate to interrupt the podcast, but I want to tell you some exciting news. So, we rely on you, we are grateful, join us on Substack. Thanks. So, why is that good news? Are you saying you're a democratic socialist?
Yes, so it's good news for me. Are you saying that you think our government ought to serve all the people and not just the rich people? That sounds pretty good to me. Wow, but you're a crazy radical, now I see where you're wearing a red shirt. Well, let me tell you something, folks, he's right, this is good news.
“If you think that what this means is, that the democratic party is going to be taken over by democratic social, that's what it means.”
It means that where there are pockets of people who are interested in these views. They are going and saying, we don't want to compromise anymore, we want government that serves the needs of people. And what you're going to get is a slightly different mix of Democrats. There will be some moderate Democrats and there will be more progressive Democrats when Democrats get together in a room.
That doesn't necessarily mean conflict.
It means on a whole host of economic issues, the Democrats could finally stop with the incrementalism,
stop with the compromises and start standing up for common sense things like health care, protecting the environment, or reforming education, or common sense gun laws. The things that, you know, everybody wants, progressives have been pushing for the whole of and the moderates have been slicing off pieces of thought.
“I think it's, you should look at it not as a new fight within the democratic party,”
but you should look at it as a new balance within the democratic party, one that is moving it to be more progressive, and that doesn't mean left versus right. That means that it will be a party that is more responsive to the needs of more of the people, even as the Republican party becomes a party that is more responsive to the needs of a few richer people. And that's what this is about. But in frankly, throughout American history, that's what the battle
has always been. Do we go with the forces that represent most of the people? Or do we go with the
forces that represent the richest people? And it's going to tug a war ever since the beginning. But since, you know, Alexander Hamilton was, you know, standing up for the quote Federalist, who were representing sort of the emerging industrial interests in the United States and financial interests, more than Jefferson and the Democratic Republicans, who were more representing at what at the time was the agro economy of most of the country. But it has gone
through many phases throughout our history. There have been swings, one direction, gilded age, swings, another direction, Teddy Roosevelt reform. And I hope we are in one of those swing back to sensibility and compassion as Riley hopes because Riley is a good man with a good heart. You're a two-minute. I'm sure. I don't know about all that, but thank you. Wow. And I know you are two-minute. Thank you. It's nice to be included in Riley's talk.
Yeah, exactly. You may have a percentage of it. All right. What else do we got? Well, hi, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a properly recessed house of representatives
Early for the July 4th holiday after a rebellion by heartliner Republicans,
paralyzed the chambers legislative schedule. The gridlock stems from the internal GOP disagreements over how to pass the safe America Act, President Trump's top priority election reform bill, as well as unfulfilled promises regarding a separate border security measure.
This legislative standstill has created a critical bottleneck stalling the Pentagon's annual
must-pass defense policy bill and threatening the party's broader agenda ahead of the
“midterm election. Why is that the must-pass defense policy bill? You want more defense spending?”
I don't. Yeah, well, they do exactly. The reality is, these guys are so, they don't work most of the year anyway, right? They're on vacation most of the time anyway. And when they're there, they don't actually get anything done. And, you know, there's a divide in the Republican party between the Republicans who don't want to get anything done. And the Republicans who only want to do bad shit. And so, that is leading to this tension. Because the Save America Act
is actually the Screw America Act. It's a program to cheat in the upcoming elections, to try to keep Trump safe with majorities that will restrict the number of investigations into his corruption. And Mike Johnson was explicit about that earlier this week. He said, "If you do not maintain these majorities, people will investigate Trump and they'll impeach him and that'll
“be terrible." Well, actually, that's what should happen. And I'm not sure that these”
spasms on the floor of the house are actually going to lead anywhere constructive. But they're laid for a couple of weeks. Thank God for small favors. Well, got to hang down a bad story today. Yeah, why not? Because we've had too much good news. Yeah, let's keep our averages up.
Our president's latest financial disclosures revealed he earned more than $1.4 billion from family
crypto ventures last year, making digital assets the primary driver of his income. This massive revenue was propelled by nearly $800 million from world liberty financial. And $635 million from meme coins following administration policies widely seen as beneficial to the crypto industry. Can't imagine why those policies would be in place. Seems like a bit of conflict of interests to me. Well, you know, you're again, you said your democratic socialist. Why should we listen to
“anything you have to say? Yeah, it's because I actually hate capitalism, which is why I'm saying”
this. Not that it's incredibly corrupt. Yeah, I understand. Well, look. Yeah, no, I understand that. That's the kind of nuanced view that has turned him into an important commentator on these affairs.
But here's the thing. Trump was asked about this today. And he said, well, it's just a stock market
going up. Everybody's doing well. And I'm doing well. It's not just the stock market plan. He also said, well, my stocks are hand, but we have people who handle that literally standing 10 feet away from him about to get on the plane, where the two people who handle Eric and Don Jr. His sons who are running those crypto businesses. You know, that's the separation. There is no separation. What was he getting on by the way? What plane was he getting on? Good question. Thanks. Thanks for asking.
He was getting on bribe force one. He was getting on a literally a flying bribe given by the Cateri government to go fly somewhere off in the Midwest. But he's flying around on an open violation of the amoluments class. Because this guy has taken corruption to new levels to billion dollars, you know, caching it. By the way, you know, he was a rich guy. So in 2024, he made a few hundred million dollars. But in 2025, he made several billion dollars. In other words, when he was out of
office, he was making x and when he went into office, he was making multiples of x. Do you think that's just because the stock market's doing well? Because frankly, it isn't doing that well. No, it's because he is given regulatory benefits to crypto, like Riley said. And if you were following our discussion yesterday about the slaughter decision at the Supreme Court, which essentially says he can appoint anybody he wants to head up any independent agency for whatever reason he wants.
Do you think that we're going to regulate anything? Or do you think he's just going to fill up agency with people who will give the decision that he and his friends want?
This was a decision to increase corruption in the United States, just like th...
finance decision was an in a decision to increase corruption in the United States, just like the
“Trump versus the U.S. decision in 2024 was a decision to increase corruption in the United States.”
The Supreme Court has deleted democracy and turbocharged corruption. And to compound that,
we have the most corrupt man ever to serve in public office in the United States as the president
“with more power than any other president ever has had, including the power to be more corrupt”
and to get away with more. Happy 4th of July, everybody. Happy 4th of July. That's where we are
in America. We are not the land of the free and the home of the brave. We're the land of the rich. And the home of the super corrupt. And, you know, no wonder Riley has turned over and been radicalized. I think it's just as he's paying attention. Anyway, that's it for today. We have deep state radio later today. We have words matter tomorrow. We have a need to know later today.
“We've got all sorts of stuff for you. Although we are not broadcasting, if that's what you would”
call what we're doing. Somebody I saw somebody refer to one of these things as a "vodcast" because we do video. So we're not "vodcasting" on Friday because of the holiday in order to honor America. So we can look up in the sky and see our president flying around in a big giant bribe. But we'll be back Monday. Anyway, lots of content between now and then. So join us. [Music]
