Hello and welcome to the DSR Daily of David Rothkuff.
I'm joined by Riley Fassler and Minestine and frankly, there's so much going on in the world today. We can't cover it all, so we'll just cover some of it.
“And then you have to go and find out about the rest of the field fashion way,”
you know, doom scrolling. Like you're probably doing even while you're listening to this, you're listening to podcasts and one thing, you're doom scrolling. You know, come down one story at a time. We'll give you some, and then you can go back to doom scrolling for more.
Who's going to start us off?
I'm going to start us off with a story about all of the things we have to look forward to this week. So much to look forward to. Hmm, is it Christmas? It is. We can move on.
“Christmas in July. Yeah, okay. Yeah, I know there's some things to look forward to.”
It's the you're talking about the World Cup semi-finals today in tomorrow. Exactly. No, we're talking about Christmas, which is coming up this Thursday because President Trump announced yesterday
that he will deliver a prime time speech to the nation.
Why always love those? Yeah, go on. This Thursday evening at 9 p.m. So you're in luck amid a collapsing interim peace steel and escalating tensions with Iran. While the White House is not yet released to specific details,
administration insiders indicate the address will likely cover the resumption of U.S. Iran war and the newly reinstated naval blockade on Iranian shipping.
“Additionally, Trump is expected to address domestic.”
As if that weren't enough, yet go on. It gets worse. Don't you worry. Trump is expected to address domestic politics by discussing newly declassified intelligence concerning alleged voting machine vulnerabilities, continuing his longstanding rhetoric surrounding election integrity,
ahead of the November midterms. Wow, that was put very nicely because of course that's not what it's about. Because what it's about is coming up with a predicate for stealing the elections in November. What he wants is to come up with an excuse so that he can seize voter-row, seize election machines,
investigate outcomes of elections, postpone the certification of elections. But he needs a predicate. So what's he going to do? He's going to go back to 2020 and he's going to go and get some documents that his real estate guy now in charge of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence
Bill Pulti has dug up and he will say see this proves foreigners were meddling with our elections. It could happen again and I won and this was stolen from me and apparently also John Ossoff and Raphael Warnock didn't actually win their seats in Georgia and so we're going to have to fight election fraud because it's everywhere and he's going to start trying to come up with more of things. Now, courts have been batten down a bunch of his efforts to get voter rolls and
whatever. So this is going to be a new thing and the part of it that is especially worrisome aside from the fact that it's an authoritarian power play is that he's going to say this is because of national security and they can't release everything and the courts can't stop them because the president has special powers when it has to do with national security and who knows maybe he'll get Maduro who's sitting in a jail wanting to come out to say oh yeah we've metled with the election
and maybe I'll say oh the Iranians metled with the election unlikely he'll say that the Russians who actually metled with the elections metled with the elections but of course that's the kind of grab bag of things that we can expect on Thursday night and it will trigger activities over the next four or five six months that really put democracy in jeopardy in the United States. This is the kind of thing authoritarian leaders have done throughout history to tip election results
in their favor and of course it's appalling it's I mean really red lights should be going off as for what he's going to say about Iran complete bullshit he's like oh yeah we're going to put the blockaded we're going to control the straight and we're going to charge a 20% fee to everybody who goes through it and from now on the United States will be known as the guardian of the straight
For most that's not going to happen folks first of all it would require a mas...
presence forever secondly the Iranians won't have it others in the region won't have it and the
“rest of the world won't have it as if the cost of shipping goods around the world were not high enough”
without a 20% Donald Trump I fucked up in Iran and you're going to pay the price forever search hard it's ridiculous but he wants to say this because he is desperate to find a way to turn his idiotic ghastly war crime riddled mistake into something that he can say see that was a success I don't know I'm really looking forward to Thursday night I love this kind of thing from him and and we also have don't we have today what's today Tuesday or tomorrow don't we have a top
blanche in front of the congress we'll get there but yes it is tomorrow okay great okay well there's a lot to look forward to this week that must be right Riley looks so perky this morning
“not quite because I have bad news for my first story and actually for my second story she will”
get there later shock shock a reading yeah okay bad news for Riley first time for everything go on the fatal shooting of a main motorist by an ice agent marks at least the ninth death connected to the Trump administration's massive deportation campaign at the same time federal investigators have
finally turned over critical evidence including body warrant camera footage and physical property to
Minnesota prosecutors investigating three controversial immigration enforcement shootings from earlier this year although local officials welcome this long overdue break through they confirmed their lawsuit against the federal government were made active while investigators thoroughly analyzed
“the newly acquired data it's horrible news and it's not just the night we are roughly”
since Trump took office at least at 60 people having died in ice custody whether in ice facility is or gunned down by ice in the street want to put that in some perspective for you because I looked it up this morning since 2016 in the past decade the number of Americans killed by terrorists overseas is about 70 and that includes 23 people killed on October 7th in Israel and includes the people the soldiers that were killed when we were evacuating
from Afghanistan those were the two biggest instances and we don't know the actual number who died in ice custody are at the hands of ice but we do know this it's not a par with all the people who've been killed by terrorists overseas Americans so is it fair to say ice is you know a terrorist organization of some critics do is it fair to say ice is actually you know an organization guilty of serial killings as other critics do yeah
is it fair to say that ice should never continue in its current form because it is so tainted
by its criminal activity yeah but let's be clear in this week alone two people have died who were innocent people who were contributing to their communities who were beloved who had done all the legal steps they needed to to be in the United States and not only were they gunned down and called blood by ice but ice then began this process of trying to say they provoked it using the old lie well they were going to ram us with their car
this organization is despicable they disappeared from our radar briefly while they were trying to
get funding they got $70 billion in funding which is more than all but one or two armies get
in a year and now they're killing people and I would add in Maine where there's a senate election Susan Collins voted for the $70 billion in funding that is now resulting in good citizens of Maine good residents of Maine being gunned down in street so it should have political consequences
Is this a despicable organization that should be shut down yes does that mean...
enforce our borders of course that we should within the law guided by due process and also guided
“by common decency which these people have cast aside because they want to be seen as doing horrible”
things because they think it's a disincentive for people to come to the United States they're right of course so disincented for people to stay in the United States it's appalling it's disgusting it's the work of Mark Wayne Mullin and Stephen Miller and Donald Trump and Susan Collins and all the Annablers they need to be held accountable hey it's David and I hate to interrupt the podcast but I want to tell you some exciting news we are now on Substack through Substack we're going to be

would have never reported on this at all but in bizarre world we will take what we can get
and that is that the Trump administration's Department of Health and Human Services has rescinded a $10 billion freeze on child care subsidies and social services funding targeting five democratic led states the reversal follows a federal judges block on the temporary restricted drawdowns which were challenged in a lawsuit brought by California Illinois Colorado New York and Minnesota the initial funding freeze is part of a broader push by president Trump to withhold federal
dollars from institutions and states over disagreements on policies ranging from climate initiatives to campus protests yeah it's part of the president's desire not to give aid to blue states from by the way once much of the money for the eight comes it's completely unconstitutional it's completely contrary to the spirit of the constitution it is completely contrary to the letter and
spirit of the law it's odious behavior of the first rank and he does it all the time me just the
other day was saying we're not gonna give you know disaster relief to blue states and apparently there's data that shows that we don't give the same amount of disaster relief to blue states because in Trump world there is only one metric that'll get your job that'll get your support that'll get you the help of the OS government there's only one thing that matters in the United States now it's not the principles in which the country was founded it's not what's right
“and what's wrong it's not what's good versus what's bad the only thing that matters in the”
United States right now is loyalty to Trump show loyalty to Trump you will get appointed to a job show loyalty to Trump doesn't matter if you're incompetent you get to keep your job show loyalty to Trump you will get aid and money from the federal government challenge Trump you will not only
Not get those things but you'll have the wrath of the OS government unleashed...
the wrath of the Department of Justice if you are seen as an opponent you will be penalized
“this country is about loyalty to Donald Trump it is about a personality code yesterday the”
secretary of the treasury Scott Besant revealed that Trump's name and like this will be on currency in the United States on coins in the United States it's against the law we don't do that in this country only monarchies do that and dictatorships but there are banners with Trump's picture across Washington there are buildings with Trump's name on it across the United States of America Trump is making America about Trump his narcissistic appetite for being the center of attention
for never being challenged for being in charge it's corrupting everything in America
it's appalling it's disgusting it's impossible to imagine it's happening here and now
“on Thursday night he's going to explain why he is going to interfere in the elections”
so that he and people he supports can remain in power always contrary to the will of the people if this is not five or in fire about democracy in America about where this country is headed I don't know what is folks I know it's a summertime we want to relax we want to be at the beach we don't worry about this stuff but what he's doing now in the summer is unfurling a plan in the hopes that it won't get attention but it will produce the desired result
which is Trump America the United States of Trump terrifying well my next story will not do much to alleviate that because the Pentagon has confirmed that National Guard's highly
“visible deployment in DC will be extended through inauguration day 2029 despite carrying a”
staggering at taxpayer cost of three million dollars per day for nearly five thousand active
troops multiple studies indicated these arm patrols have had a little to no actual impact on the cities of violent crime rates the unprecedented multi-extensionist sparked intense pushback from local officials and civil liberties advocates who warned that using the military for routine and domestic policing poses a serious threat to democratic norms which is of course the point yeah I mean look anybody has been to Washington knows they perform no useful rope
they are doing cosplay the reason these troops are here is to make this look like an authoritarian
country they are muscle flexing from the White House at the cost of three million dollars a day
three million dollars a day that's a billion dollars a year to do nothing except satisfy the ego of the president and intimidate people in the city crime is going down Trump and this intervention with the National Guard has played absolutely no role there have been studies has played no role in approving the quality of life in Washington but what he's saying is as long as I'm here they're going to be troops in the city along with the banners along
with the buildings being renamed for me along with his face on the currency along with the only criteria for getting into the government being loyalty to the president along with the penalties for those who are not loyal to the president go study any dictatorship in the world find me the contradictions find me what's different so an article today and it was like Trump is failing and is a power play failing this is failing well our last day also looks to what we have to look
forward to this week starting tomorrow the nomination of acting U.S. attorney general Todd Blanch has ignited a fierce debate over the rule of law due to unprecedented conflicts of interest to stemming from his time as Trump's private defense attorney during his recent tenure as deputy and acting head of the Justice Department Blanch has faced heavy criticism for actions viewed as blatantly partisan advocacy for his former client including signing off on a sweeping
IRS tax settlement for Trump and advancing a controversial anti-weaponization...
confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled to begin tomorrow July 15th
“legal scholars and professional organizations including the New York City Bar Association”
are urging senators to reject his nomination well of course they should reject his nomination him moving jelaine Maxwell to a cushy prison camp should be reason alone to do that
him being in charge of the Epstein files and not releasing two to three million pages of the
Epstein files ought to be reason not to confirm him him being in charge of the recriminations and the attacks on people within the government outside of the government the kind of Trump hit squads that have been out there tormenting his opponents ought to disqualify him his contempt for the law what he has said about judges ought to disqualify him the fact that he was Trump's personal lawyer
“ought to disqualify him what he tried to defend Trump from ought to disqualify him there are a”
hundred reasons to disqualify him the question is how many people in the Republican party have the
assumption to say no to Donald Trump their edge in the Senate at the moment is very low you could tell because
ours after Graham Senator Lindsey Graham died his sister was appointed the new senator from South Carolina his sister who has zero public service experience why go back to the prior comment she is expected to be loyal she is expected to vote the party line she's expected to give them one more vote for Blanche one more vote for the Save America act that she will not think on her own that she will not be able to represent the people of South Carolina on her own they need her in there the reason
“that they need her in there is the Trump is alienated certain senators who are you know either”
that you know not running again or you know have he helped defeat them in primaries of the
capacity or corn in and then there are other senators who will often stand up to him whether some ran Paul or Lisa McCouske or there's Susan Collins who's running for reelection you know if I'll only a couple of those vote against Todd Blanche he's not going to get to be attorney general but if Todd Blanche becomes attorney general folks with Trump unveiling his plans about the elections we're in trouble the bad news is if he's not confirmed as attorney general
Trump will make him act again attorney general and he can stay in that post for a long period of time because he was confirmed already once as the deputy attorney general so we're stuck with Todd Blanche but it would be really good if the United States Senate Senate Senate message and said "partens for January 6 people attacks on Trump opponents you know coddling people like Galine Maxwell you know coming up with this crazy idea of a settlement over the IRS by the way
read what the judge wrote about that he is sanctioning he has recommended the judges recommended sanctioning the lawyers including Todd Blanche who are involved in coming up with it because it was a complete fraud on the court there loads of reasons not to approve it and any any of them should be enough to stop him but if he's not stopped tells you where we are as a country well you know you said it was going to be like Christmas in July it's not mena it doesn't
feel like Christmas in July to me but we'll cover this and we'll cover everything else that's going on you know we've got I don't know there's you know is there an AI bubble is it going to blow up the economy we'll talk about that in Siliconjustice we've got DSR we'll talk about Trump's takeover of the straight-of-war moves and where this war goes they have a norm or seen a words matter and we'll talk about Trump's Thursday speech and where that's likely to take us
with regard to election interference we've got the daily blast from the newer public every day we got a lot coming for you so join us via however you get us on YouTube on sub-stack by a normal
Podcast channels in little bits and pieces on Instagram or TikTok and we'll s...
