Hello, and welcome to DSR Daily. I'm David Rothkuff. I'm joined by Riley Festerman. A Stein. We're here to talk a little bit about what's in the news today. Can you guess what story leads us off?
Well, you don't have to wait for long. Riley's going to take. The recent surge in national gas prices above $4 a gallon, triggered by the war in Iran, has Republicans concerned that President Trump's approval ratings could suffer ahead of the midterm elections. It's suffering more than they really are. Really? Really? Yes. Right now, as approval rating per yesterday,
was something like 62, 31, or 62, 33. In other words, twice as many people disapprove of him. As approve of him, the only ones who approve of them are America's, I don't know, what should we
put it. Deplorables, you know, that the third, I mean, men are like this because she's such a
Hillary fan. But, you know, they're one-third of Americans who will vote for Trump. Literally, if he commits an illegal war in kills thousands of innocent people while destroying the
βAmerican. Oh, that's what they do. That's what he's doing. Sorry, Riley, didn't mean it in the ruptu.β
Well, historical data from the Carter and George W. Bush era shows a strong link between a fuel cost and plummeting at popularity. Reasoned political polarization has tended to make modern approval ratings more stable. However, analysts suggest the unusual speed of this current price hike may overcome that stability and lead to a more significant political impact than
seen in previous years. Ultimately, the administration faces the dual challenge of rising costs at
the pump and a widespread a public disapproval of the ongoing military. Yeah, and it's got him spooked. You know, markets get him spooked. This kind of things got him spooked. And what did he do this morning? He went, I put out a social media post that outlines the new Trump doctrine. And the thrust of the post was go get your own oil was like, "States of form, straight of form is not our problem." You know, or to paraphrase, you know, Colin Powell's
famous pottery barn rule, which was, if you broke it, you've own it. Trump's rule is, "I break it. You fix it." But why is he doing that? Because he's looking at this and he's
going holy shit. The problem is, if he, you know, follows up in that and he doesn't do anything else.
And he just says, Iran turned the straight into a toll booth, which just seems to be one of their potential intentions. The price of oil is going to stay high. The price of natural gas is going to stay high. The price of fertilizer is going to stay high. God's the quietly, the price of food is going to stay high. So he is damned if he do and he's damned if he don't. But we knew that,
βbecause we knew if anybody in this life is damned, it's Donald damned, Trump. Donald Trump is urgingβ
Congress to cut short its recess and return to Washington to resolve the ongoing department Homeland Security shutdown, which has now stretched beyond 40 days with no agreement between the House and Senate. Still made centers on funding for agencies like ICE, with Democrats demanding reforms and Republicans insisting on full funding, leaving negotiations at an impasse. While the administration has taken temporary steps to pay some workers,
officials say only congressional action can fully reopen the Department of Homeland Security. Yeah, that's of them to recognize that the steps they've taken to pay some workers are what are called illegal steps, because the president doesn't have the power to control the purse to Congress does. And maybe he should have thought of this before he told his Department of Homeland
Security to get out there, kill Americans do whatever Stephen Miller says, ro...
due process sent them out of the country and behave like a bunch of Nazi thoughts in masks
without identification terrorizing people in our streets. Maybe had he thought about this before he did all of this authoritarian bullshit, then we would not be in this situation. But it's easy, he could have fixed it yesterday. All he has to do is say, why don't we enforce the laws
βthat have been written in the ways that we have traditionally enforced the law?β
No masks identify yourself. No warrantless searches and seizures. And then there wouldn't be any of this problem. But he really is trying to fight for the authoritarian past forward. That path forward, because he's a little want to be dictator. Not so little, but definitely want to be. The Trump administration is organizing an international summit to establish a global coalition and share intelligence aimed at countering. You want to take a guess David what they want
a counter, um, uh, freedom of speech, pretty close, countering antifa and left-wing extremist groups. That's a special way to create a global coalition to counter the tooth fairer, because there is no
βantifa. So let's get a bunch of countries together and we can have a global coalition to counterβ
elves. I mean, the bad news for Mike Johnson. But finally, I've been saying that for years,
the elves are the problem. You know, the killer elves. Yeah, because in the Lord of the Rings, the elves, the elves were all kind of, weren't they all kind of like a tractive and like what? And the keep were elves? No, Lord of the Rings. Oh, yeah. Or the resurrection. Wasn't Kate play and shut like the Queen of the Elves. She is Galadriel. Oh, whoa, whoa. No, I love Lord of the Rings. No, it'll hurt. All right, Kate, you go.
While officials justify the focus by citing a history of violence and designated several
βEuropean leftist entities as terrorist organizations, experts and people with common senseβ
argue that antifa functions as a decentralized ideology rather than a structured entity critics and former officials warn that this shift in counterterrorism priorities may distract from more pressing threats posed by Iran and Hezbollah. Furthermore, legal experts have raised concerns that the administrations efforts to criminalize movement may infringe upon
constitutional free speech protections. Yeah, so let's just break this down, folks. First of all,
Antifa is short for anti-fascism. Now, isn't that a terrible sentiment? We actually thought an entire world war on the side of Antifa. We were the antifascists. The fascists were the enemy. Now, the fascists are in control and they're like, hey, don't be so tough on our friends aid-off in Benito. I mean, real crazy, even though this is not a group, but it gets crazier when you think about the fact that it was just a couple of years ago when we had an administration
that actually periodically told the truth that the director of the FBI sat in front of Congress and under oath said the big threat comes from right wing extremism. The kind of people who Trump turned on the Capitol, then pardoned, then put directly into roles in the government and into his Goon squads in DHS, Trump is promoting right wing extremism, and the country sees embracing or doing it. But hidden in all of this, there is a big crying fit to come.
It's sad. And that is that two weeks were down. There's going to be an election in Hungary. And one of Trump's favorite right wing extremists, one of Trump's favorite want to be totalitarians, Victor Orbod, could lose. Now, that assumes that he allows the elections to take place and allows them to be fair and doesn't just make some bold break for Benito Mussolini territory, or to put it in terms that he is more drawn to Vladimir Putin territory.
But Trump, Stephen Miller, the right, the CPAC folks, Victor Orbod loses. A, they're going to be real sad. B, he's going to end up in the Trump administration. He
Could be the next head of the Department of Homeland Security, or maybe Marco...
watch your butt. Maybe we can have Victor Orbod as our next secretary of state. You like that idea, man. I see that. Don't give them any ideas, David. Yeah, sorry. Well, I'm sure they're listed. You want to know something by the way. You know, I joke. I'm sure they're listening. So yesterday on the daily beast podcast,
βyou know, I do a daily beast podcast once a week because I do a column there. And I think it'sβ
good cross promotion for everything that we're doing here. Please don't listen to them and not us. But of course, you're listening to this. So I know you are listening to us. But you can't listen to them. You have our permission just also to stop listening. That's anyway. There is this daily beast podcast, which I do every day. And in the daily beast podcast, I'm going to call on my data a week. And I said something like Trump Square and they're on this
bed. You know, that kind, I mean, nothing like wild and, you know, but some, you know, fact-based analysis, you know what happened? Stephen Chung, the director of communications
at the White House, for the second time in like eight weeks, put out a tweet saying,
David Rothkoff is a nobody. I mean, I don't know. I know, seriously, if he says I'm a nobody, one more time, he's going to turn me into a somebody. You know, he seems to be a little fixated
βon Mr. Nobody over here aren't you, Stevie, when you should be more fixated, maybe on going to theβ
jet, because you look like Stephen the hut, okay, Riley knows the reference, probably minute doesn't because she's not into those nerd movies. But, um, just kind of interesting, because, you know, you say the Trump administration may not be watching, maybe they are. Well, I have a fun story to follow that up about the true spirit of America. It's like, wait, are we wrapped to the spirit of Christmas this year when fast? The true spirit of America, which is suing each other,
dozens of participants in the January 6th Capitol riot have filed a class action lawsuit against
the federal government, seeking more than $18.4 million dollars and alleging police use excessive
forest during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The plaintiffs, including some who were convicted
βand later granted clemency by Donald Trump, claim officers use explosives, chemical agents,β
and physical force against what they described as a peaceful crowd. The lawsuit is part of a broader wave of illegal challenges tied to the January 6th attack on the Capitol, even as the U.S. Justice Department continues to contest similar claims. Maybe they can test, maybe they don't look what happened with Mike Flynn, Mike Flynn, you know, famously, somebody of betrayed his country, famously, somebody who is national security adviser for three weeks because he was
providing information to the Russians that he should not have been providing and then he lied about it. Mike Flynn, that Mike Flynn cut a deal last week with the Justice Department, because he was suing
them and they said, "Okay, we'll give you a million and a half bucks." No court trial, no nothing,
just the government providing a pay off to one of their supporters for committing an illegal act. And the government can do this with any of these people. Any of these people who, you know, were in the January 6th riot or were doing anything that Trump doesn't like, they can sue the government and then, you know, Pam Bondi and Todd Blanche and these other hacks, these political function areas who have turned our Department of Justice to a Department of Injustice, they can just start
writing them checks and say, "Well, that was just a settlement. They were suing us." So we had to use taxpayer money to pay off criminals, which is, you know, it's like Trump is suing them and he expects to get millions and millions of dollars into his pocket for new-sense suits, founded and complete bullshit. You're right, Rena. This is American dream. This is the American dream. Everybody can get rich in America. If you sue the right person, have the right lawyer and ideally, if Donald
Trump is on your side, doesn't care about money and tells them, "Link, not go ahead, give him a little cash, let's spread it around a little bit."
Is Real's parliament has passed a controversial law establishing the death pe...
Palestinians convicted of deadly terrorist attacks intended to quote "negate the existence of the state."
βProponents, led by National Security Minister Ben Guevier argue that the legislation is a necessaryβ
deterrent to prevent convicted attackers from being released in future prisoner swaps. However, over the law has drawn a sharp condemnation from human rights groups in European allies who warrant it as a discriminatory and undermines a democratic principles. And why is it? Why is it discriminatory, Riley? What's wrong with this law? Because it is. Because right, because only Palestinians can get tried under this law and get the death penalty
under this law is Rayleigh's can't. Okay? So look at this law read this story in the word that
should pop up in your mind, even though the Israelis don't want it to pop up in your mind,
βis apartheid. Okay? Because that is two sets of laws based on ethnic differences within the society.β
The treats one group one way and another group another way. And that is just what the Israelis are doing. But I'll tell you something else, the Israelis are starting to interrupt you. But tell you something else, the Israelis are doing. They are blowing up. Any good will that they ever had in the world. They did, of that, of course, with genocide and Gaza. It should have been over
then. They are doing it with claiming parts of southern Lebanon, dislocating millions of people.
They did it by triggering this war in Iran. They have done it by anti-democratic laws within Israel. They have done it by government, Lincoln and not, little more than that, supporting settlers
βas they carve up the West Bank, kill people, deprive West Bank Palestinians of the rights. They'veβ
done horrible, horrible thing for years and years and years and they thought that in the United States of America they had it worked out. They had big group of support, maybe. It was Jewish support, it was evangelical support. It was Republican support, it was Democratic support, it was apex-funded support. Guess what? That's over. Yesterday, J. Street, a sensible Jewish organization, unlike a pact, which is a downright, evil, toxic Jewish organization. J. Street did a little bit
of a poll. It looks like two thirds of American Jews oppose the war that's currently going on that was started by Israel and Trump with Iran. And the vast majority of these American Jews now oppose Israel for policies like this. The support is not there anymore. The only support that they maintain is partisan, right-wing Republican support, and evangelical Christian support. But you know, I mean, for example, yesterday Cory Booker, who's trying to refashion himself for a national
political room, was really put on the spot because he says, you know, we need generational change and everything. What are the right things to say? And he's from New Jersey. I'm from New Jersey. I'm, you know, like to hear that. He's a good guy. But he's taken $800,000 for May back, over the course of his career. And he appeared on our friend Jen Welch's podcast. I've had it. And he was talking about these changes. And she said, but you've taken $800,000 from May back.
And he's like, well, it's over the course of career. It's really not that much money in the scheme of thing. The message is being delivered. If you take money of an interest group that actively supports genocide undermines the rule of law and internationally undermines U.S. interest, it's going to be penalty now. Democrats who continue to sort of curry favor with this law, this particular part of what is called the Jewish law. They're going to lose support. They're going to be primary.
They're going to be challenged on it. All because these railways are doing these horrible things. And I didn't even add in, you know, the crazy stupid self-inflicted wounds like on Palm Sunday, turning away the Roman Catholic Cardinal in charge of the Holy Land for going
To try to participate in a Palm Sunday service at the Church of the Holy Sepp...
Wherever you look, there are piss and people off. And with good reason, their behavior is
detestable. Well, it's only Tuesday folks. I'm a little worked out. And I'm old. I mean,
βRiley and many of you guys are young. You should be really worked out. But you look like you bothβ
want to take a nap. It is nap time already. It's been a long week. It's been a, it's been a, it's the crack that done on Tuesday. But look, everybody, if you want to take a nap now, take an nap, you've had your dose of a trip. Go out into the day if you're in the East Coast
if you're in Washington, could be the first short stay of the year. That's some positive news.

independent journalism that has not lost its sense of humor or perspective, I'm telling to go do it. It's not that much money. It's less than the cost of like a latte per month. Frankly, it's way less than the cost of a latte per month. It's less than the cost of, I don't know, two diet coats a month at this point. Certainly, and I've made a wish to read frame this, Riley. We're right around the cost of a gallon of gasoline at one. So, you know,
don't drive around. Right. Don't drive around. You know, listen to us, but if it can't help it, while you're driving a race, bending all that big money and gasoline, listen to us anyway, but also support us. Anyway, thanks, everybody. Thanks, Riley. Thanks, man. I have a good day. Bye. Bye. It's been a while since I've been driving around this school, and then it's been a while since I've been driving around this school.
No, no, no. I'm not driving around. I'm driving around my safe space. Mm, you're driving around my safe space? Yeah, exactly. I'm driving around the state of the state of the state of the state of the state. I'm on the studio, job or on the way. I'm on the way. I'm on the way. I'm on the way. Save. With what?
