Hello and welcome to the DSR Weekly Wrap Up for Friday, February 27th.
“I'm your host, Riley Fussler, joined by Minestine. How are you, Minna?”
You know, I'm about to Friday. How are you? Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Lots of bad news stories for today. I'm fortunately. Droughts say for news yesterday. Yeah, and for the American people. Lots of things to doom and gloom about. So why don't we just get right into it?
Diver it in. Okay. Our first story for today.
Hillary Clinton testified before a house oversight committee, investigating alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein, accusing Republicans of conducting a politically motivated, phishing expedition to distract from Donald Trump's ties to Epstein and denying any personal connection to him.
“The closed door session grew contentious with Clinton criticizing representative, repetitive and conspiracy driven questions,”
and a brief suspension occurred after representative Lauren Bobert leaked a photo from the hearing. Clinton also urged the committee to question Trump under oath while expressing confidence that Bill Clinton, who is also set to testify, has no knowledge of, had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes.
I don't know about that last part, but definitely in terms of her hearing.
What an absolute mess. They're leaking photos, even though it's closed door. They're questioning her about UFOs in the last few minutes. It was just such an example of political theater that had like literally, like, it was literally leading to nowhere, other than to be like, we question Hillary Clinton. Yeah, we did something. I mean, I don't understand what her connection to this is, I understand her husband's connection.
I don't really get what her ties into this, and it feels to me like, they don't know what her tie in is either if they're asking her about what she knows about UFOs. So, yeah, this was kind of a hot mess. But if there's anyone who can sit for hours and hours and be questioned about ridiculous things that she had nothing to do. That's like an example of political theater, like she can do it. So I trust her ability to sit and be smart and outsmart Republicans who are trying to catch her in something.
If anyone can do it, she can do it. Yeah, I mean, it obviously is political theater. I think the thing that most Americans care about is how much Trump was involved with Epstein at this point. And I mean, like you said, her last, that last little bit about Bill Clinton. I don't know, but as for Hillary herself, I don't know that there's that much evidence of that in the files that have been released so far.
So it just seems like kind of a waste of time and you're going for a small fish when the big fish is right there sitting in the White House. And they're just not really going to do anything about it, which is not surprising.
“It seems like the only thing way that something like that will happen is if Democrats win and the midterms, which it seems like they will.”
But we guess we have to wait for that to get some actual semblance of justice. And even then we won't get it. It will take another administration before anybody is actually going to be brought to justice in relation to these files. And also, let me preface this by saying, I think anyone involved in the Epstein atrocities should be questioned should be brought to justice.
In terms of doing political theater in order to get people riled up against D...
Like I don't know, I feel like if this was the 90s, maybe this would be like a great thing to do, but it seems like now.
“I don't know if anyone really cares about this other than to say, like, hey, your questioning Bill Clinton, why are you questioning?”
Trump, or any of these other people who are involved, but I just don't know if this is like the gotcha moment that Republicans think it is. Like I just don't know how or that Bill Clinton holds in the Democratic party to get people like really upset. I don't know. I mean, 2016, the last time that Hillary was in the public line light at all was 10 years ago, I don't know that even the base cares that much about her anymore and little on Bill, but I know the general public certainly doesn't.
So yeah, I don't think this is really going to land in any significant way.
“I'm curious to know how she answered those UFO questions though.”
Yeah, that I didn't expect, but I would be interested to know that too. Well, in an entirely different story, Pakistan launched significant overnight air strikes and ground operations against military targets in major Afghan cities, including Kabul and Kandahar, marking a severe escalation in regional tensions. The Pakistani government described the strikes as a retaliatory response to unprovoked Afghan border attacks, while his defense minister officially declared the situation in open war. The conflict is rooted in Islamabad's longstanding accusations that the Taliban authorities provide sanctuary to TTP militants.
A claim Kabul continues to deny, while both nations report heavy casualties in the destruction of numerous border posts. The international community has expressed deep concern and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further destabilization. I don't think either of us are particularly well equipped to comment on this conflict. Obviously, not great for regions stability, but I can't really comment on how legitimate that Pakistan's claims are. Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot to offer there, but significant enough story that I felt like we needed to cover it regardless of our.
Perhaps inability to, you know, sufficiently analyze and give you guys some keen insights on this.
“Yes, nevertheless important to cover and definitely will keep following it like if there's a development on Monday, we'll cover it and David will be here to.”
Give his insights and now to look at some stories that are reviewing other stories that we've covered, this is kind of the big one for today. Paramount Sky Dance, one the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery after Netflix declined to match its 31 per share dollar offer clearing the way for paramount to acquire Warner studio HBO and cable networks. Pending regulatory approval Netflix said the higher price made the deal financially unattractive while paramount sweetened its bid with a larger termination fee and other concessions to secure board approval.
The merger would significantly reshape the media landscape by combining major film studio streaming platforms and news networks though it is expected to face regulatory scrutiny. I know you have a lot of thoughts on this. I do as well. This seems like a disaster. We can all kiss a CNN goodbye. That's the next CBS now and it's just very. I mean, it's tough when you get put in a situation to be like, "Hmm, which horrible merger should we do? Paramount or Netflix?" Yeah, I mean, both were bad, but the worst considering like the impact that it's going to have on like free speech for example, really not good.
Yeah, I mean, the answer to that question was whichever company is kissing Trump's ass less and that was Netflix and it was kind of the writing was on the wall conservative influencers started railing against Netflix and championing paramount deal. We already have heard comments that they were going to grease the wheels to make the paramount deal go through smoothly so that that last sentence about facing regulatory scrutiny. It certainly will not. There's going to be no scrutiny. And I, you know, I have a feeling that played a role in Netflix pulling out. We know that the Netflix CEO was at the White House yesterday before this announcement that they were going to back out.
I can't help but wonder if they're basically told we're going to make this hell for you.
You know, from a regulatory standpoint, if you go, try and go through this deal.
I would not be surprised at all.
So, I, this kind of wasn't surprising. It is, of course, disastrous for, you know, politics and that CNN is going to, as you say, be completely gutted and cbsified.
I don't, I, I, I shutter to think what non-journalist loser like Barry Wise is going to be tapped currency and then now.
“But I mean, it's also bad for the industry. Paramount makes boneheaded decision after boneheaded decision. In the movie industry, they posted a, I believe, $470 million lost last quarter.”
So, I mean, this deal is entirely propped up by Barry Ellison, you know, it's not by the business prowess of David. You know, I saw a comment on the post that might have some truth to it, which is, I wonder if they were wondering if Netflix is just waiting for the combined Paramount Warner Brothers to go belly up in a couple years and then buy it then because. But that's going to have significant impact on our culture and society and to buy a production studio. Yeah, for sure, but I mean, I do wonder if that's part of their calculus because Warner Brothers posted a lost last quarter and Paramount posted an even bigger loss.
And these are two companies, hammering money, being combined to have hemorrhage and even larger amount of money. I'm not convinced they will become profitable by combining.
So, I mean, but I also raise a question of why company losing so much money is able to buy another company, but that's an entire other issue and we saw that when discovery bought Warner Brothers.
“So, I was just basically auction off its assets to settle discoveries that's how these deals continue to go through amazes and confounds me and mostly angers me, but yeah, this is a disaster.”
Hopefully we at least don't feel the effects for a little bit, but I have no doubt the administration is going to fast track this deal through. So, you know.
I shutter this impact of this is going to be it's like hard to even think about because like on the one hand, you have the issue of like there being no production studios, right?
Disney makes all the movies on one side and controls all the TV shows and now like Paramount's controlling all the other ones. So, like that's the problem in and of itself and then you have like the way that they're just going to kiss up to the administration now and like the impact that that's going to have on people who watch the news like it just makes me I just like I can't even wrap my head around the fact that the impact that this is going to have on not only the film industry and the streaming industry, but also the industry of reporting on things that are going on in the world in an honest
“and truthful way. I just I hope it's not going to be as bad as we think and that's the only thing that I can cling to is that it hasn't actually happened yet, but I feel like it's going to be really bad.”
Yeah, I think it is. Unfortunately. Our presentation for your podcast, frisches opst and knackiegis Gemüse from Aldi. Immer gut, immer günstig, immer vielfältig, kurz gesagt frische für alle, zum Aldi Preis. Well, I'm a different story of a CEO that did not kiss up to the administration, anthropic CEO Dario Amadeh has projected a Pentagon ultimatum to remove safety guard rules from its AI models. Siting ethical opposition to master valence and fully autonomous weapons. Defense Secretary Pete Heggseth set a Friday deadline for the company to grant unrestricted military access or face the cancellation of its 200 million dollar contract.
The DOD has further threatened to design an anthropic as a supply chain risk or invoke the Defense Production Act to compel compliance or seize control of the technology. Well, competitors like OpenAI and XA have already accepted the Pentagon's term because of course they have anthropic's defiance marks a critical impact in the integration of frontier AI in a national security operations. Rare defiance corporate defiance that should be commended. Of course, those two other companies have already accepted the terms because they don't actually give a fuck about anything, just other than the almighty dollar.
So it's nice to see at least one of these AI companies have some kind of moral compass.
It seems to be rare, but happy to see this happen.
So good.
“They should have bought Warren Brothers.”
Combine those two stories. You know, there is actually a story. I mean, we could have done like literally a thousand stories on everything that happened yesterday, but something that we've covered before that we didn't cover today, but we could have is mom Donnie going back to the White House. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean, listen, not to take away from his huge achievements. He's a very smart person he is, but at the same time it's like not that hard to play Trump, like you literally just have to bring like a headline, a metal, tell him he's handsome, tell him he's like the smartest person in the world.
And you'll get like literally whatever you want. However, that being said, I do think it's incredible the way he's playing him to get everything done in New York that he wants to do.
I mean, obviously he's not getting everything done that he wants to do, but like he's working with the administration in an extremely effective way. Good for him. I love to see you. Yeah, exactly. He should be a model for how to deal with the administration to like because you know, you do have to kiss kiss up a little bit, but he's actually getting good things done like getting that student released.
“So I mean, if that's kind of what you have to do.”
Certainly, I'm willing to make that trade, but you know, I expect, unfortunately, he's probably going to face some flack from other people on the left for kissing up, and but you know, I think it's a worthy trade off.
That is the reality of the world.
Yeah, if it makes people's lives better than so be it. Yeah, so that was just something interesting that happened yesterday that I was curious what you thought about. Our last story for today, looking towards the future to end our week on a horrible note, US immigration and customs enforcement and several Maryland sheriffs criticize a new state law sign by Westmore that bands. 287 cooperation agreements between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities sheriffs, including.
What comico counties, Michael Lewis argued the measure prioritizes politics over public safety, while Democrats say it prevents.
Preserves community trust and clarifies limits between state and federal authority. The dispute reflects broader tensions over immigration enforcement with figures such as former governor Larry Hogan and senator Chris van Holland Wang in on the balance between public safety and immigration reform.
“The reason why I put this in the future looking story section and why I think it's ending on such a horrible note is that the reason why Westmore did this is because it's becoming very clear to people who live in this area.”
The next, Minneapolis is going to be in Baltimore, just because of the ongoing beef between Westmore and Donald Trump and the fact that ice is buying warehouses around Baltimore and Baltimore County. It does seem like they are planning on targeting that city and area state next. It's troubling, obviously I hope it doesn't happen, but I put this in the future looking section because it's definitely something that I am waiting to see what happens with. I do think that Baltimore is going to be targeted next in these ice rates.
I hope that doesn't happen of course, but it is something that I am keeping my eye out as we go into the next months of this horrible administration. That seems like probably a safe bet to me, unfortunately, I think you're right on the money. And if that happens, or is more developments on that story happen, we will cover them right here on the DSR daily and across the DSR network. So we hope you'll join us for those. But even though the week is over, we've still got a couple more episodes coming out, we've got Daily Blast, which should be out in your feed right now.
Words matter that came out late last night, so I hope you enjoy those. And we'll be back with you next week for more right here on the DSR daily and until then, bye-bye. Do you have any questions about the story? Do you have any questions about the story?
Do you have any questions about the story?
Yes, exactly.
“The story is the story of the story, which is simply different.”
The story of the studio, the job, or the house.
The story is the story of the story.
The story is the story of the story.
