Hello, welcome to the DSR Daily. It's Friday, yay! And I'm David Rothkuff. Yay! And even more, yay!
Ish, we are joined by Riley Fest, so I've been a Steinhary doing guys.
Good. It's Friday, so it's got to be good, right? Yeah, don't. Absolutely. Although it's raining and disgusting here.
I heard that us being on this episode and all episodes of this podcast is just yay. And it's no more than yay is? I think it's just full yay. Extremely, extremely yay. As we would say, in lack yay, it's seamless.
I would now we've got that kind of good FM morning show vibe going on here. Riley, why don't you kick us off? The Iran-linked hacker group Hondala hack team has claimed responsibility for breaching this personal email account of FBI director Cash Patel. To support their claim, the hackers published private photographs in a purported resume online, adding Patel's name to their public list of successfully compromised targets. While Reuters could not fully authenticate all the published materials, or a view of the leaked data revealed a mix of personal and professional correspondence dating back to 2010.
Adjust this apartment official has since confirmed the compromise of the director's emails. The FBI has not issued a formal response regarding the security breach. How much you want to get? It was just a basic fishing scheme. That he just clicked on.
“Yeah, how much do you want to bet that revealing all of this material reveals Cash Patel to be a big door?”
I mean, I think that's anything. I bet it's exactly 100% 100% chance. Well, well done there, Iran. You've got after the softest and least interesting target in America. Minna.
Donald Trump will have his signature added to U.S. paper currency for the first time, according to the Treasury Department, marking a break from the longstanding tradition of only including signatures from Treasury officials.
By longstanding, you mean, by longstanding, you mean always.
Yeah, longstanding. Always. He gets right until now. I guess. The move announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is tied to the nation's 250th anniversary,
and is framed by the administration as recognized recognition of Trump's economic leadership. Critics know the decision comes amid economic concerns, and view it as part of a broader effort by Trump to place his name and image on federal institutions and symbols. I didn't know it was such a great economic leader. That has been my experience.
But now he's leading us straight to the poor house. He really is. We've got 4% inflation, literally lurking around the corner, $5 gas, California, soon be at $6 gas. Price is going up everywhere. Food supplies are going to be in short supply.
We're not creating jobs last year. In the whole year, they created 180,000 jobs, whereas Democrats, Biden, others, create millions of jobs. He's an economic loser.
“The only thing he's really good at is corruption and self-promotion.”
And oh, well, here we are at the self-promotion department. And I got to tell you something, just between us, because you know, people don't talk about this in polite society. But when I see a guy who's 79 years old, and he wants to name everything after himself, build statues to himself.
He had a cabinet meeting this week. He said, "When are they building a statue to me and Venezuela?" The Trump Kennedy Center. There's the Trump ballroom. There is the Trump Institute of Peace. There's going to be a big memorial, the arch downtown
and DC that he wants to name after Trump. He's putting out gold coins that say Trump on them.
Now this, I think this guy is having
intimations of mortality.
“I think his fat, canclet, ankles and his weird,”
discolored hand and his bloating and his head sinking into his chest and his inability to articulate a clear sentence. It's just to sign that this is an old dude who sees death around the corner. And it's like, "Well, how can I leave a lasting mark here?" And so what he's trying to do is, you know,
essentially tag everything as if he were a graffiti artist. Trump's a graffiti artist. And I mean, all I can say is, "Yeah, I don't want any of those." If there's any good reason not to use paper money anymore, you know, just let's just move straight into electronic money.
This is it. It's been a long time.
Yeah, this is a schoolflashback, just to get rid of it.
No, no. I don't think so. This guy is my safe space. Do you think so? Yeah, exactly.
“This guy is the type of guy he just understands.”
He's the type of guy at the studio, "Jobbo, or Unzug." I don't think so. I don't think so. You don't think so.
I don't think so. You don't think so. With this guy. You know, he's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands.
He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands.
He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands.
He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands. He's the type of guy he just understands.
He's the type of guy. Well, the US Senate passed legislation on Friday to end a six week partial government shutdown, aiming to restore a funding for the Department of Homeland Security and alleviate severe delays at national airports. The standoff was originally triggered by a democratic effort to impose restraints on immigration
enforcement following the fatal shooting of two US citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis.
Ultimately, the compromise bill provides no new limits on the administration's immigration tactics.
Nor does it include the additional enforcement funding as sought by Republicans. While the bill still requires House approval to reach the President's desk, Republican leaders have already indicated they intend to seek separate funding for their broader border security priorities through alternative procedural maneuvers. Yeah, which probably will be, you know, some big budgety bill that will come down the pike in a little bit.
This proposal, by the way, has been knocking around all week. Even earlier this week, Senator Thun, the majority leader, said this was what he supported. And, you know, they could have done it. Of course, last night Trump said he was going to free up the money for TSA by executive order, not sure he can really do that.
But if he can do it, then why didn't he do it for an half weeks ago when all this started? Anyway, those people should get paid and it'll help reduce the lines in airports, which are a huge pain in the ass to the world. And, you know, now maybe they can turn their attention to funding ice, which, or reforming ice, where the leverage is less,
because ice has already been prefunded in the, the big beautiful bill that was funding for it, that will carry them for a while. So, I suspect there will be very little progress on that made until, I don't know, maybe there's a new Congress, Democrats in the Congress, Democrats controlling the house, maybe controlling the Senate who knows could happen.
“Hope it happens. Really could use it happening. By the way, if you want to talk about that kind of thing,”
if you're interested in political outlook, listen to our new need to know that I did with Jen while she was the well-known host of the I've had it podcast, while she's the co-host of that, and she's also doing a number of other. I've had it related podcast that was profile over in the, your time to profile over in the New Yorker, and we had a great discussion on where politics oughta
be going in this country on our need to know podcast. Please listen to that. Okay, what else? Anything else? Come on, there must be something else. Yes, go on. There's a few other things. Marco Rubio arrived in Europe for a group of seven meeting, as tensions rise over the US and Israel's war with Iran, with allies frustrated, but still seeking cooperation to manage the conflict's global impact.
Donald Trump has signaled both potential diplomacy and escalation,
sending more troops while pushing allies to help secure the straight-of-form news,
“whose disruption has shaken global energy markets.”
European nations remain cautious about deeper military involvement, instead favoring diplomatic solutions and coordinated economic response, while balancing their reliance on US cooperation and other conflicts like Ukraine. Yeah, I mean, look, you know, the US kicks Europe, and then say we need Europe, and then they kick Europe, and then they say we need Europe,
and Trump says, you know, I don't need Europe, but watch out Europe, and I'm going to trim your wings on NATO and so on and so forth. You know, Rubio and JD Vance give these nasty speeches over there. The relationships are chilly at best.
This follows for Trump's last four years when, you know,
his ambassadors included the likes of Rick Grinnell, the recently canned head of the Kennedy Center who was despised in Germany,
“and it currently involves ambassadors like Charles Kushner,”
who's like forbidden to see the French government, because he's offended so many of them, our tomorrows and Poland who's offended so many people in the Polish government they won't see him. So this is a low point in US relations in Europe, and I don't think Little Marko's going to fix it, no matter how big his foreshime shoes are.
And to wrap things up, President Trump has extended a pause on US military strikes against Iran's energy facilities until April 6 following a reported request from the Iranian government. It was intended to de-escalate the conflict to begin in late February and to support ongoing negotiations that the Iran has publicly denied that direct talks are occurring. And it's this extension.
Global markets have seen a sharp rise in oil prices to over $108 per barrel and a significant drop in the SMP of $500 due to the continued closure of the straight-up hormones. Trump had justified the 10-day reprieve by claiming that Iran recently allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the straight as a gesture of goodwill during the discussions. Yeah, gesture of goodwill.
Who knows, you know, Trump lies the Iranians lie. Trump has put proposals forward to the Iranians that there's no way they're going to accept. Either would amount to complete surrender at their part. He's got some people in the White House apparently saying strike now, beat him up. Let's degrade their capacity for apparently the Israeli security with that.
And apparently some of the Gulf states agree with that. He's got other people going, "Oh no, don't do this. Don't put boots on the ground. This will end up in an escalatory spiral that will get out of control. Be an endless war, alienate your base, lose American lives, cost billions of dollars." And then there was a report today from some sort of candy reporter, social media reporter,
that said that Trump is, or maybe it's the Wall Street Journal. Well, it was one of those things, saying that Trump is just getting bored of this war. I mean, after all, it's been going on since February 28th. It's almost been going on a whole entire month. Guy gets bored. He's the president. He should be able to attack a different country every month.
“Why does he have to do the same one every darn day?”
Well, we don't know. Am I guess he's got some other trick up his sleeve. There will be more violence before there isn't end to the violence. The Iranians won't go along with what he's doing. That will piss him off. He will say, "Well, I'll show them.
And he'll go and try to take Carg Island or something else." And that will be a fiasco that will cause global energy prices to spike. We'll produce deaths of American service people. And could very well lead to escalation and hits on others. So, that's what we can expect there.
I expect we'll be talking about this war throughout this week, and not celebrating our peacemaker president's latest peacemaking tribe,
or his first, because it would be that.
Anyway, it's weekend. We've got more podcasting out of us today, though, before we go. So join us for all that. Join and have a good weekend. Join us next week here on the DSO Network. Until then, thanks very much. Bye-bye.
