Hello and welcome to the sleepy bookshelf where we put down our worries from ...

In our last episode we read the final pages of Rainbow Valley by LM Montgomery, the next in the series of Iron of Green Gables books.

This is a recap of the last episode, but be warned, this is your spoiler alert.

If you haven't listened to the whole book and you don't want to know how it ends yet, stop this episode now. For the rest of you, I will continue.

Mr. Meredith heard from Mrs. Alek Davis that Karl had thrown an eel into Mrs. Karl's bugging on purpose and that she had been quite frightened by it.

He marched home and brought Karl into his study.

Karl explained that it was true, but that Mrs. Karl had driven by and called the more violence and then on her way back passed them.

The other boys had dared him to throw in the eel.

He had thought it was dad and that there would be no harm.

It was gravely agreed that Karl would return to the study after supper to be whipped. When the time came however, Mr. Meredith couldn't do it.

He had never whipped any of his children before.

Una crept in to comfort her father and heard him talking to himself. With new resolve, the next day she walked up the hill to convince Rosemary West to reconsider marrying her father. Rosemary assured Una, her refusal had nothing to do with the children, but quickly changed her mind. And quickly changed her mind on the refusal when she heard what her father had said. Una returned to the man's with a note from Rosemary for the minister and a date with set for a double wedding.

For Rosemary West and John Meredith and Ellen West and Norman Douglas. Meanwhile, the children lay in Rainbow Valley after having a feast to celebrate Jim, who was leaving the next morning to go to Charlottetown to the Queen's Academy. And for that moment, while Walter made up stories of heroic battles and pride-pipers coming to call the boys away, the realities of war were still too distant to consider. The hopes and the dreams of the children of the Glen, waiting to be realised.
