“Local telephone providers are aware of reports involving unanswered calls from disconnected numbers.”
These numbers have been confirmed to be from closed businesses and deceased persons.
While your concerns have been noticed, our helpline has currently been flooded with calls.
“So, please keep in mind that regardless of these calls, this issue is not affecting network reliability.”
Customers report hearing unspecified household background noise before the line disconnects.
No speech has been recorded and confirmed at this time.
“If you recognize sounds from your own residents during one of these calls, providers recommend ending the call immediately.”
These sounds may be the chirp of a low battery smoke detector,
a particular creek of a stairway, or even a familiar sound of gentle weeping for the bathroom. Should the call end itself prior to your hang-up, do not place a return call. Technical staff have been unable to determine how disconnected numbers continue generating calls without billing records. The matter has been turned over to the counting department. One day the call will end, your phone will stop ringing.
Please be patient until that time.
