Doing Evil So That Good May Come

April 26th, we're gonna be praying a Rosary with family and friends and your our friends at blue jacket park at a hundred and first in bond from three to five p.m. So if it's not rain and hard come and join us. Welcome to our daily Rosary Meditation. This is the first in a new seven-part series because I want to give you the moral principles so that you can

always do what is right and reach the happiness you long for. But this series probably won't

entertain you and it will force you to think and it might even make you angry but we pray together every day. So I have to give you the truth. Let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. Amen. And let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

“I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ”

His only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate. Was crucified died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and he seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father, Wharton, Heaven, hollowed be your name. My kingdom come. I will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us the state our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

world without a end amen. Our first mystery. During World War II, a young Polish nurse risked her life to save Jews under Nazi occupation. She was forced to work as a cook and maid for a Nazi officer. At the same time, she secretly hid Jews in the basement of his house and helped them escape to safety. One day, the officer discovered what she was doing and he made her a horrifying offer. Become my mistress, sleep with me and I will keep silent. Refuse and I'll report everything.

If she knew exactly what this meant, if she refused, the people she was protecting would almost certainly be killed. If she agreed, she would have to do something she knew was morally wrong. Even the people she was hiding begged her not to do it. In her autobiography, she makes it clear that she was not motivated by fear, but by the hope of bringing about a greater good. She believed that saving their lives justified what she was about to do and so she made her decision.

She accepted his offer and she became his mistress in order to protect them. Now, at first glance, this looks like courage and there is something deeply moving in her willingness to suffer for others, but this phrase is a question we cannot avoid.

“Can we do something evil in the hope of bringing about a greater good?”

If the answer is yes, then morality is reduced to outcomes and if morality is reduced to outcomes,

then anything, anything can be justified. But if the answer is no, then we must learn how to think about moral decisions in a deeper way. Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. The second mystery. The first thing to notice is that everyone acts with an eye to consequences. We all try to make choices or we should that make the world overall a better place. And it's also true that most decisions

involve pros and cons. There are always trade-offs. And usually we have to be willing to put up with

“some unpleasant side effects from our decisions for the sake of the more important good we're”

trying to do. You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, as the saying goes. But here's the question. If we have a good intention and if we really think our actions are going to bring about the best outcome overall, can we do an evil action hoping for a good outcome? No, absolutely not. Because right and wrong are not determined by hoped for outcomes alone. Our Father, Wharton, Heaven, Hallow, would be your name. Thy kingdom come by will be done on earth

“thy mercy. Our third mystery, it's very important to be clear on the difference between”

the principle of double effect, which is a legitimate principle in Catholic moral theology, and on the other hand, consequentialism, which goes directly against Catholic moral principles. The principle of double effect says, you can do a good action that will probably have some

undesirable consequences. If it passes four tests. First, the immediate action, or the means,

is a good action, not an evil action. Second, if the undesirable consequences are not wild as a means or an end. Third, if the good consequences seem as far as you can tell, to outweigh the bad consequences. And finally, if there doesn't seem to be a better, morally

“permissible alternative. So the Polish nurses decision to fornicate with the Nazi officer clearly”

fails that first condition. Her means for getting him to look the other way, it was intrinsically evil. Now consequentialism says, you can do anything, including an evil or sinful action, if you think it will bring about greater good consequences overall. So here's the basic difference between the principle of double effect and consequentialism. Very simply, the principle of double effect says, do something good with the whole that in the long run,

there will be more good consequences than bad consequences. It's like taking a hundred dollars, putting it in the bank with the hope that it will generate interest and make you even more money. Consequentialism on the contrary says, do something evil with the hope that in the long run, there will be more good consequences than bad consequences. Consequentialism starts out with destroying a concrete good and that it hopes, then it hopes for

possible future good. That would be like taking the hundred dollars, ripping it into pieces with the hope that you'll make more money. Obviously, that doesn't make much sense, which is why consequentialism has consistently been rejected by Catholic teaching. You can't do evil, hoping that good will come of it. been especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fourth mystery, we all want good consequences.

We all want to find ways to make the world a better place. The great challenge of the moral life is to do that within a morally acceptable range of options. We all want to help ease the pain of

“suffering people, but we have to look for ways to do that apart from youth in Asia, which is intrinsically”

evil. And we all want family members to know we love them and support them, but we have to look for ways to do that apart from endorsing or celebrating their self-destructive lifestyles. And we all want the church to be holy, but we have to look for ways to do that apart from attacking the Pope or undermining the authority of the bishop or the pastor of your parish. Because even pursuing a noble good end, doesn't justify directly attacking what is good. Or father who art in heaven,

“Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fifth mystery,”

true courage, virtuous courage, means pursuing a noble goal through good actions. And that takes courage because there are times when there don't seem to be any good actions, any good means available for achieving our noble goal. The Polish nurse didn't see any way to save lives without the gravely sinful action of sleeping with the Nazi officer. Her intention was good, the circumstances were certainly grave, but the act itself, the means she chose was evil.

So no matter how good the intention, no matter how serious the circumstances,

we can't do evil, hoping the good will come of it. But this is why trust in God is the greatest source of courage because it assures us that even if we can't see any clear moral path leading

“to the greater good, God is in control. So when it feels like we've run out of viable options,”

we have to leave it to him knowing that he will do greater good for the world with our fidelity and purity than we could ever do by compromising what we know to be right. So if you struggle with this meditation, I promise we'll unpack it in very simple terms

Same Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of death. May God review him, we humbly pray, and do that little prince of the heavenly host by the power of God cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits who

proud throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.

Going into it, I was kind of expecting just reflection on sort of the extreme situations, but I'm glad that you touched on the ways in which this can happen even in the simplest decisions we make in our life,

and it does apply to the big things and the extreme cases, like the one in that first point,

but it's also just the way we justify gossip when we say, I'm going to share someone else's secret

“or I'm going to talk about someone behind their back, because I think maybe it will be for their own good.”

But at the end of the day, it's still something that immediate action is harmful. And I think we can apply that to a lot of little things in our life.

Yeah, the bottom line is that when we do evil, we are attacking some human good, some good.

And then we convince ourselves that by attacking some good, we can bring about a different good. It's kind of interesting because we're trying to justify an evil, which is an interesting word for it, because if you're actually doing something good, you don't have to justify it, and you can't actually justify an evil.

“Yeah, yeah, why would you have to justify it?”

We know it's wrong.

But again, I like your point even about not just gossip, but the way we tear down an institution,

because we want change, but most of the time the active action we're currently participating in isn't trying to support people more. It's not trying to do more in our community. It's just tearing things down,

“which is not going to be the thing that builds up the church.”

Or look at how often we justify our anger. Anger is really tearing things down. But we justify it because we're right or we're trying to bring about some greater good. Doing evil is setting the house on fire, and you can't save the house by setting it on fire. But I understand, and if you're praying with us, if you're struggling with this, stay with us for the rest of this series, because we're going to walk through all these principles.
